Not Sharp At All
Complete DUMP! Horrible greens aren’t greens at all. It’s dirt and mud. Played here for 30 years, last time 2 years ago and can’t believe how bad it was yesterday. Didn’t most courses improve with shutdowns? SF city parks and rec should be ashamed, especially at those rack rates.
Course layout was good. Course conditions were fair at best. The tee boxes were either spotty for grass or overgrown. In the fairways, you couldn’t tell where the fairway ended vs where the first cut began. The greens were extremely bumpy with weeds and unrepaired ball marks. The bunkers were in great shape, but had no rakes in them. Overall the course was playable and enjoyable if you’re just looking to work on your game and not concerned with scoring. Pace of play was good for a muni course. The gas powered cart was a new experience for me and a pleasant one at that. With a little greens keeping TLC this course would be very nice. The value is not bad if you’re walking, but $40 (cash) for a cart is a little stiff. Lastly the staff was friendly and helpful.
Very fun course, pretty views, great value
I booked a single and then was asked if I wanted to join a group and get out early. It's something I actually look forward to when I book a single.
The three guys I got paired with had played the course multiple times and we're happy to share their knowledge with me. Golf is great at making friends.
The round took maybe around 4 hours. It was an excellent pace. The majority of the holes look designed to appreciate the scenery which was nice.
Some of the greens, depending on where your ball was, had large slopes which made for some real tricky and fast putts. However, a number of the greens looked diseased and almost all of them had multiple divot marks that people left. It lead to a number of putts in our group where the ball bounced all the way to the hole which was a little frustrating. We tried to fix as many divot marks as we could but we shouldn't have to fix other people's marks.
Other then that, and it really didn't take to much away from the overall experience; I loved playing here and look forward to coming back. The price was excellent.
Good practice round but . . .
The greens were in bad shape and couldn’t practice putting. Probably won’t go back until greens are improved.
Not every course needs to be Pebble Beach, but there are a few things that go a long way to making a course enjoyable to play: Level tee boxes (most of us don't care if the tee boxes are dirt if they are level), well conditioned greens and a great atmosphere. This course only has the atmosphere. The tee boxes were patchy and I found maybe two level stances and the greens were pockmarked and dying. Good location. If they improve some of the conditions I would return.
Get what you can out of the experience.
Sharp Park and Harding Park are both run by SF Park and Rec. Both have beautiful cypress trees. But Sharp seems to be the forgotten step-daughter that gets Harding's hand-me-downs (if any).
While the inland courses are baking in the 90's, you can easily walk Sharp in the cool comfortable 60's. The views and shot angles through the cypress trees are great. Bumping the ball in the fairways will help you forget the patchiness. Unfortunately, nothing will help you with the greens. They have been sadly overrun by poa weeds which makes reading them and getting a smooth roll almost impossible. Ball marks abound because it's difficult to even see them and repair them, so most players don't.
There were some encouraging signs. I sighted a shiny new fleet of golf carts (albeit gas powered). A mountain of sand in the parking lot was ready to replenish the bunkers. And Ari, the afternoon starter, was especially friendly and helpful.
Loved it
All those haters who leave poor reviews are guys I wouldn’t want to golf with anyway. This course is beautiful. Yes, there are some poor lies every once in a while, but just move the ball to a reasonable piece of grass and hit from there. And if you’re by the book, then you should be hitting better shots because there is a ton of good grass out there to find. Play more golf at Sharp Park and give the city a reason to put more money into maintaining this gem.
Serious gopher problem
Interesting course in beautiful surroundings but there are gopher and mole hills all over the place. It’s hard to use the term “fairways” in describing this course - tons of clover, dead grass and hard dirt patches.
Tricky greens
Good walking course. A few uphill climbs on the front but relatively flat elsewhere. Plays longer than 6300 yards. Thick cut fairways so you have to commit to the shots. Greens are super tricky to putt on.
Greens are in bad shape. The grass has been taken over by weeds and patchy which made putting unpredictable and very slow.
No carts
They used to have bad carts but at least they had them, now on the first heat wave of the year, they didn’t have a single cart. Not that they ran out, but nobody, not a single person got a cart
