Rare Alister MacKenzie designed track.
Live about 50 miles from Sharp Park. Never played there, but decided to try it out because it is designed by the great Alister MacKenzie. For those who don't know, MacKenzie designed Augusta National where the Masters is played and other great courses like Pasatiempo. It is muni course played mostly by locals. It could be transformed into a great course but would need a lot of money to transform it.
Sharp park is a well designed course on a great piece of property next to the ocean. However, the condition of the course is not great. The course has lots of potential but the California drought and being city owned makes it difficult to improve the course. The track has some really good holes. Greens were in decent shape but were super slow. Many of the fairways are brown. Number 4, 5, 6, and 7 are temporary greens at the moment.
Limited practice facilities. Just a practice putting green. No range. They do have some nets but they don't look operational.
Sharp Park - a fun 18 on the beach
Love this course - friendly staff, great crowd of locals, just keep out of froggy territory or you'll lose a sleeve of balls.
Designed by Alister Mackenzie
If you know golf you should be honered to play a course designed by Mackenzie. Sharp is old and under going much need yard work. They say the greens will remain true to the original design. We golfed with a great local named Jerry. He was full of history and it was a pleasure to golf with him. There are currently some temp greens. This course will be beautiful once the greens are completed. If you're from out of state, please remember CA is going through a severe drought....very dry and hard fairways.
Not what I expected
Booked through GolfNow 4 days prior, but when we got to the course, our tee time was pushed back over an hour due to a members tournament that was not on the calendar when we booked. Announcements not heard in the restaurant, so when all tournament players were on the course, we were rushed by the starter to get started. Fortunately, my twosome was matched with a couple of local players who guided us through the course. A few good views of the Pacific Ocean, but most of the course winds through the trees. Overall experience not very good, which is bad because the local area is quite beautiful.
Great greens, fair MacKenzie challenge
For those who are not members at Augusta National or one MacKenzie's private course designs, being able to play a MacKenzie public course is a privilege. His complex greens have withstood the test of time.
The greens were rolling smooth and the course is in good condition.
Hoel 16 & 17 are a mess, mostly dirt fairways. Hopefully they will be renovated soon. Otherwise the course is in good condition
Good value!
Nice course, greens really in good shape, fairways dry in spots, couple holes had fairways completely dry. Brown is the new green, with the water issues on CA. All in all, I would golf the course again when in the area.
Good Value
I have played this course many times and the value is always great. Conditions seemed worse now than int he past.
Hit it far
Challenging course a little long for short hitters
taking over 5 hours no good
slow pace nobody care better have someone to watch slow player make them go faster
Sharp Park
Scruffy course in Pacifica, but setting is lovely, on the coast.
Links style very dry fairways and tee boxes are unkept, but if you like challenging courses that are different check it out. $42 to play in SF! Views are spectacular! Will play again!
Sharps!!
I have played this course for over 20 + yrs. But have not played it in over 5+ yrs. I have to say, the course is in better condition than I thought. I would definitely play Sharp Park again.
Family friendly
Played with my two boys and it was great. Very affordable for juniors and a good layout for young golfers
Fuzzy and Dry
The weather broke after the first hole and the fog disappeared. The course was in fair shape. Most of the course was in a very dry condition and the greens were good except they were very long, they really needed a mowing, just hard to putt because they were so fuzzy. Lots of gopher holes and bare ground.
Bucket list track
You have to play this Alister Mackenzie track. It's got a really good fun layout. Some challenging tee shots, especially the par 3 5th hole, narrow and long. An easy walk with some great views and wild life. I'd like to go back and actually post a nice score, didn't work out for me on this occasion, but was fun none-the-less.
Slowest Play on the Coast
This place still hasn't figured out how to space groups. You start off for the first three holes fine but as soon as you hit holes 4 thru 7 your easy flow can come to a frozen halt. Please help them realize that it's not how many groups you get off its spacing that matters. Otherwise this course is nice, its long and has some tough holes the tees were currently up for a couple of holes which should have been listed.
sharp park
decent course. weather was incredible though. will probably play again
A lovely walk back in time
You can feel the history oozing from Sharp Park, a rare Alister MacKenzie course still relatively intact today. It's such an enjoyable walk. You can't see the water, but you can feel it in the thick heavy air. If you can forgive the clovers and daisies and dirt spots in the fairway and the slow greens, you can better appreciate how beautiful of a municipal golf course this is. The routing is fantastic. I don't recall a single fairway bunker. The holes just flow through the towering trees, turning right or left, whichever way MacKenzie's whims took him. The holes 4-7 across the highway are really superb. The back nine, starting at the par 3 12th hole, roams into the wetlands that sometimes flood in spring and caused all the trouble (and lawsuits) with the environmentalists. There's so much potential for this place. The bar inside the clubhouse seems to be a lively spot to stick around for a beer and some banter. Affordable, fun, playable, walkable, serving a diverse clientele - this is how golf was meant to be.
Right on the coast!
The best thing about this course is its location. We were able to be there on a day that it was sunny and about 70! Although the course was in very good condition a few greens that are covered by trees are rough. Gotta love the old gas powered golf carts. Though this appears to be a course best walked, so i will be walking next time. The local that played with us explained about the endangered frog there. I say that the activists pay to build a secure environment in their current location. This will save the frogs and boost sales as more people will come pay to check out the frogs, and of course for the location!
How cool is it that SF golfers can play Harding Park, Presidio and Sharp Park, as well as a little par 3 course in Golden Gate Park. What a golf city.
