The course has good bones
OK. This course was actually designed by Alister MacKenzie. That's for starters. Years of low budget maintenance have taken their toll. But the greens are just fine. And they mow the fairways every once in awhile. I enjoyed the routing. Nothing too tricky except one blind par 3 on the back. Overall I got my money's worth -- as a local senior. Main negative was the condition of the power carts -- dangerous.
Needs work
As this course rate has risen, the course conditions have not risen in the same proportion. The fairways were full of the mowed grass, some partial fairways were still muddy and not playable.
Super Dumpy!!
This place is a dump, don't waste your money. They should put some money back into the course. What a mess!!
Trash
It hasn't rained in 4 days and the course was an absolute swamp. Lost multiple balls that plugged in the fairway. Fairways aren't mowed so it was hard to find a lot of drives that were straight down the middle. Quality of golf is pretty bad and the marshalls don't do anything to keep up pace of play. The "clubhouse" (where you pay) was a disaster - they don't have a computer. I bought a sandwich at the bar and it was rancid - literally spoiled. Had to give it back. They did generously reimburse me the 5 dollars but not the food poisoning. Clean it up!
My favorite course
I wish this course came up on Golf Now a little more often as it is a favorite. The layout is excellent in that it has a little of everything. Up hill holes, down hill holes, short 3, long 3, etc. I've played this course over a year ago and sadly it wasn't in very good shape but this time it wasn't too bad. The main complaint would be soft areas on some fairways but that would be due to recent rains. It was the greenest I have ever seen it. Now the bad side of the round. First, the guy at the counter, while trying to do his best, was beset with issues and setbacks. Cash register wouldn't work, had a hard time confirming my reservation. And he wasn't even there when I arrived. I had to stand around for a bit before he came out. One would think if he left someone else would take over. The other thing, while the play has never been particularly fast there, this time it was the slowest I have ever encountered. Waiting at nearly every hole and it didn't even let up as we neared completion. I think something unusual was going on as that has not been the norm there. If I return it will be interesting if it happens again. But apart from that, it was enjoyable to be on the course, as usual.
Easy Course, Slow Play
Wet course may have explained the slow play, but we waited on almost every tee box. II would blame myself for not noticing the price didn't include a cart, $13 for a cart seemed a little much. Overall it was a decent course for the price,
Beautiful setting, course is just so-so
Some strong positives, and some equally strong negatives about this course. Starting with the plus side, the location of this course is absolutely terrific as you sit literally right next to the Pacific Ocean (no real ocean views however) and minutes from San Francisco. The ocean setting can provide some challenges with wind though, so be prepared and come with layered clothing (we played on a rare 80 degree sunny day, not typical whatsoever!) With a little investment, this course "could" be utterly phenomenal but it is, after all, a muni course and it definitely feels like one. No driving range. The fairways are mostly browned out, the sandtraps need serious trimming with overgrown lawn getting into them, the greens are challenging and probably the best kept part of the actual course. The cypress trees pose some shot challenges off the tees and for fairway approach shots - makes for some fun shot selections, especially given that this course is laid out in a rather predictable fashion. Basic upkeep could be added (example, the ball-washers are bone dry and/or completely broken.) Don't expect any amenities. Lastly, if you like to walk-play, this is an excellent course for that as most golfers walk the course (besides, the carts are gas-powered and all should have been put out of commission years ago.)
The Land that time forgot
Sharp Park was designed by Alister MacKenzie in 1932 and has a great layout and design. Unfortunatly not much has changed there since then, from the gas powered carts to the sad closet of a pro shop. The course itself has seen better days and the cart paths are more of an obstacle course or X-Games event! That being said the greens and approaches were very nice and again the layout is great. Theres a mix of everything at Sharp Park and it is deceptively challenging as well as a great value.
Not worth the money
Course was in poor condition for the price I paid. ($46, not cart). Temporary green on 16, and just overall poor fairways and greens.
Sharp park
Excellent layout, poor condition
Classic Course, a bit tired...
First time for me to play SP and admittedly, my primary objective was to stay cool with inland CA temps in the mid-90's and upward. When the weather is like this, the heat draws the marine layer in from the Pacific and I was in the low 60's. Course is a links style with little surprises and an enjoyable walk. However, weekend play and absence of Marshals made the initial backup at the 5th hole a bit unbearable. Most players will drop off at the 10th since this returns back to the Clubhouse, but even so, a 5-hour round should be expected. Don't be surprised by the ever present homeless vagrants who make a covered tree canopy between the 16th green and 17th tee their sanctuary-city home. Welcome to CA!
Renovations Showing Progress
Yes the rumors of Sharp Parks demise have been greatly exaggerated. All of the holes are open and the greens are green and rolling smoothly. The fairways are fine and setting is tranquil. You can feel Alistair.
Amenities are not great. Ball washers may or may not have water in them. Gas golf carts are of another era which added some charm for me. It was the first time that my grandson experienced a choke.
Staff and the locals are all gems.
We had breakfast at the Breakers and drove Highway 1 through the new (new to me) tunnel.
A grand day.
Greens and fairways not so good.
Fairways not very well maintained. Golfers not fixing divot marks on greens ( sad almost every course this is problem) no water in ball washers... towels don't look like they been replaced in year's. Too bad because course could be so much nicer.
much improvement
I stopped playing sharp because of greens condition. Thought I would give it another try ? Glad I did ! Greens in much better shape now !!! Definitely worth playing now.good layout !
Great layout. Poor condition.
Sharp Park resides in Pacifica, CA. It has a great layout with some holes requiring a carry over barrancas. The problem is course condition and kack of amenities. Bare patches in fairways and multiple ball marks on greens make rating this course any higher impossible. However, low prices are compelling.
A relaxing stroll by the sea
The course is much improved from the recent rains and the greens that were replaced. All the holes are open, the fairways are lush and green but not mushy. The greens are in very good shape and the pace of play is almost always under 4 hours. A great deal for resident rates and reasonable for non-residents.
Cheaper in person
Booked on golf now for 40$. Got paired with a single and the payed half the price. 4 temporary greens and conditions were terrible. The price was the real kicker. Didn't play the full 18.
The Sun Came Out!
I love the overall layout and greens at this course. Unfortunately, the conditions are not great. The fairways are kikuyu, but spotty. The greens in the canyon (3-6) are temp for the next X months. Those are some cool holes, but I appreciate the move to upgrade the greens for the long term. This course needs a little love and it could be really good. P.S. let's get rid of the cartpaths on 16 and 17. I'll be back for my 2 rounds a year at Sharp Park.
Rare Alister MacKenzie designed track.
Live about 50 miles from Sharp Park. Never played there, but decided to try it out because it is designed by the great Alister MacKenzie. For those who don't know, MacKenzie designed Augusta National where the Masters is played and other great courses like Pasatiempo. It is muni course played mostly by locals. It could be transformed into a great course but would need a lot of money to transform it.
Sharp park is a well designed course on a great piece of property next to the ocean. However, the condition of the course is not great. The course has lots of potential but the California drought and being city owned makes it difficult to improve the course. The track has some really good holes. Greens were in decent shape but were super slow. Many of the fairways are brown. Number 4, 5, 6, and 7 are temporary greens at the moment.
Limited practice facilities. Just a practice putting green. No range. They do have some nets but they don't look operational.
