Pacific Grove Golf Links
About
Originally designed by Chandler Egan in 1932, the first nince holes takes you through the forested areas of Pacific Grove. Egan's nine takes you through an inland terrain and reflects much of the charm of an English rural course done in the old style.
The back nine was designed by Jack Neville, the original designer of the Pebble Beach Links. It opened in 1960, and is laid out in true links design over dunesland that approaches the sea.
Over looking the course is the Point Pinos Lighthouse. Built in 1855, it is the longest continuously operating lighthouse in California. It is a historical sentinel and picturesque landmark of the golf course.
A scenic tour of the dramatic coastline provides views of Lover's Point, Point Pinos, Crespi Pond and the natural dunesland at Asilomar. You will be enchanted by the abundance of natural wonders such as the plentiful Pacific Blacktail Deer, seals, sea lions, sea otters, pelicans and gulls.

Recommend playing on a sunny, windless day!
The greens were recently aerated and the water hazard was drained which took away from enjoyment of playing the course.
The restaurant served luke warm soup on a cold windy day. Other than the about we had a good time. We enjoyed observing the deer
while playing.
not too often you can play with a view of the ocean for $50!
I played Saturday (tee time 1:00) for $50.00. Course is very walkable- not too hilly. Decent condition - like all public courses some patchy areas. Greens had just been aerated so they were a tad bumpy but it didn't bother me since I expected it. The front nine is relatively easy- mostly long flat fairways - not too windy when I played. No place to lose a ball really. Overcast and fog came in about the 6th hole so we played with sweaters on the rest of the day. Back Nine has some great seaside views. Real big sandy areas etc. I loved it and would gladly play there again next time I am in the area.
Great golf by the ocean!
The front 9 is not as scenic as the back nine but, is slightly more difficult than the back 9. The back nine makes playing this course worth it as, it is all next to the ocean. It has been said that this is the poor man's Pebble Beach course. While it is not quite equivalent to PB, it is a great value for what is offered. I love this course and play it everytime I come down to the Monterey/Carmel area.
Slice of Heaven
You can't beat the ocean views and terrain on the back nine. My wife and I come down a couple times a year, even though we live in San Jose and have over a hundred courses that are closer. It earns its nickname as "The Poor Man's Pebble Beach".
The greens have been in better shape; they need some attention. The pace of play this round is NOT typical and was due to the two players we had in our group. While dad claimed otherwise, he and his son were both beginners, both ADHD, and they walked. Showing them 3-5 times per shot where their ball is and where the green is, plus the dad insisting on giving constant instruction really countered our attempts to get them to improve their pace of play. Usually this is a 4-4 1/2 hour round.
Far better than your typical Muni
Played this course because it was on Golf Digest's 100 most fun courses to play. I certainly wasn't disappointed. Front nine is ho hum thru residential area. But the back nine--Wow! As close as I'm gonna get to the Pacific Ocean in this part of CA. Awesome views, lots of fun.
Best value for money.
For the price of playing Pebble Beach you can play Pacific Grove 10 times!! The greens were true and pretty quick, the scenery was fantastic - deer walking the fairways on the front 9, with spectacular views of the ocean on the back 9! Great facilities, an excellent layout and $50 including a cart.... you can't beat it. Do yourself a favour, play it!!
nice view
The course is certainly better maintained I am impressed with the positive changes. I will be back soon
heavenly
I had the best day ever since I started playing golf, had 6 pars andi chipped 3 holes from about 30, 25 and 12 feet. Needles to say we had a wonderful day (me and wife). The place is unbelievable especially the back nine along the coast. Any golfer should play this course at least once, next best thing to pebble beach which happens to be around the corner.
Always a great place to play.
Course was in very good shape although some of the greens were a little bumpy. A very pleasant experience.
always great views on the back 9
always fun to play PGGL watching the deer running around. Played with 2 fun guys from So Cal. really good pace of play on the front 9 but things slow a bit on the back 9 just taking in the views sorry. Back 9 makes you feel like you are some where else in the world other than in Pacific Grove CA.
Front nine greens are a little bumpy. Back nine greens are good.
Fun course to play. Spectacular views abound in the back nine.
Best value in Pacific Grove, Carmel area.
I have played this course four times and it is worthy of the name, "Poor man's Pebble Beach". The back nine has holes along Asilomar Ave and you can see the Pacific waves crashing into the rugged coastline as you tee off. The pace of play slows along the back nine, but the Marshalls are friendly and are understanding. This is a gem of muni although some of the greens and fairways are in need of repair, with obvious signs of wear and tear. Worth every penny, especially when booking a tee time on Golf Now.
love the course, very picturesque
you have to be able to use all your shots
not for nothing is the course called "Poor Man's Pebble Beach" - very beautiful scenery
Short but Challenging
A lot of short holes but very challenging, views are fantastic. Greens are tricky. Love this course!
Play was way too slow. The marshal was out but didn't make any difference. The foursome ahead of us were two holes behind.
I've played the course many times--very disappointed with the pace this time.
Other than the greens being a little shaggy and a little bumpy, course was great. Staff awesome!
The course is awesome. Other than the greens being somewhat bumpy, slow and traffic worn, the course is fantastic, Ocean views are sensational. Equally, the staff is outstanding!
Front nine enjoyable, took 21/2 hours to play the front, and unable to play back because of weather.
The main reason to pay Picific Grove is for the back nine, unfortunately, due to strong rain and wind we where unable to play the back nine.
Bipolar Course
As many have noted, this course is really two 9 hole courses from different mothers. The front nine is a low grade muni thru residential areas and the back is set on a spectacular piece of property with great ocean views and links style landscaping. The front nine is just something to get thru in order to play the back nine. One odd point about the back is that for a links looking layout the fairways are not very tight and you cant putt from them link on a true links. I would recommend playing this once for the experience, but don't plan to return.
Foggy Morning Start
Wow, love this early morning start and cool foggy summer morning. Sun came out half way thru round, right where the course changes from parkland to links style. GR8 views of the Pacific too!
