Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course

About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Blackhorse improving nicely
Last round at Blackhorse (early May) the greens and fairways had been punched and sanded, so not a great setup, but the course did reduce prices to match. Now in early June the fairways are fully back and the greens are almost back to perfect. Still a bit sandy and thus not their normal speeds. Cool pacific breezes with the fog layer just close enough to make things comfortable. The marshal was helpful in getting around a slow group. Enjoyable challenging track!
Challenging Course
Blackhorse has become a real challenge with the addition of several sand traps and greens that test your putting skills. Overall a good time and fun to play.
The layout of the course was nice but they just punch the course but no notification on the teeoff it was. Not worth the money.
Not good today
No mention of plugged greens. Fairways are horrible, tractor track marks everywhere. Fresh planted and very sandy around greens. Just a poor look from the club. Just let me know ahead of time so I dont drop $100 to play a very unplayable course.
Greens punched and poor condition. Issue is no notification of this prior to booking and paying full price.
Great value
I have played Black Horse and Bayonet a number of times. Great Value and layout. They airraded the greens, so they were slow and bumpy, but we were told before hand, so we were ready. Golf is always great fun there and the food is fantastic.
Almost unplayable
Really should close the course as it’s a mess - tee to green it was like playing in a bunker. I’m sure it will be fine in a few weeks, but for now, take a pass on BH.
Cold and windy tough conditions
Second time playing Black Horse. Course was in great shape. Found a lot of bunkers yesterday, decent sand, definitely need to improve bunker play. Green smooth. Hole 2 had some damage to edge of the green. Restaurant wasn’t available due to special event. Would have been nice place to warm up after the round. Overall good day, shot 83 no birdies. I prefer Bayonet, due to my style of play.
Great value in Monterey, CA
This course ranks wih the more well known Monterey courses on 17 Mile Drive, but at an affordable price. It was in great condition. High rough that could hide your ball and very fast greens made it quite a challenge - we think they were setting up for a tournament. Highly recommended.

We had a super day on Blackhorse. Wish my game was as good as the weather and the course were!

Really liked the course. Played at 11:40 and finished in less than 4 hours. Course was in great shape!
