Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course

About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Snotty Counter Boy
I got done early with my round and asked the counter boy if I could go back out for my second 18 as a single. Counter boy didn’t even look at the computer and said No, you need to wait for your time which was 4 hours away. It was like starting all over again when I did get to play. Counter boy should learn to work with people instead of acting like an A hole because he’s in a control position. No one likes a PrI cK
Such an amazing course
Super difficult greens but it was the nicest and coolest place I've ever played. I had so much fun!
Great course
We loved the course! Good practicing area, range balls were included with our booking. Tee box and fairways are all in good condition. Good value. Would come back.
Great course, not easy, nearly a perfect day
I have played Black Horse before but not for some time. I was a bid disappointed to see all the homes that have been built and how close some of them are to the course. Yet another amazing Monterey golf course to suffer this fate and it just takes away from the game. I was also surprised to see how many trees were gone and/or extensively trimmed. I guess this was done partly for safety and all the construction. Too bad. The course conditions were fantastic and it was a beautiful day with just a bit of wind. One thing that was an interruption several times were people driving in reverse direction on the course and right into us several times while we were teeing off. This includes the marshals, which surprised us. This caused some delays in pace of play and the interruption on the tee box to us was very unnecessary. I would definitely go back to either Bayonet or Black Horse and just hope for a couple small improvements and it would be another perfect golf day in Monterey County!
avoid until september
fairways full of sand. no ball roll. tee boxes 1/2 inch of sand making swing feel unstable.
a little heads up from TeeOff would have been nice.
Avoid this course until September
Tee boxes had 1/2 inch of sand. Fairways also covered in sand. No roll in fairways and tee shots like hitting out of a bunker. I understand you need maintenance but a little warning would be nice. Do NOT play this course until September!
Black Horse fun
Had a great time at Black Horse/ linked up with some great people and had a beautiful day at the links. Pace of play was okay and despite recent aerification the course was in good shape. A lot of trees are gone due to a recent storm. It remains a beautiful glance with panoramic views of Monterey bay.
Beautiful courses BUT...
The course layout was very nice and the condition of the greens were good. They maintained the fairways nicely. If you hit a bad shot you're challenged by a desert style sand on a few holes. My only two complaints are the bunkers that were not soft. They were dusted with sand and felt like clay. They also did not have a cart girl. Well they did but she disappeared. Our tee time was at 12pm and we saw her at the first hole and never saw her again
It was a good thing we stopped at the bar before teeing off. Overall it was good golf with beautiful views of the Monterey Bay.
Beautiful courses!
Both courses are great but Bayonet is our favorite. Beautiful layout and gorgeous views.
Two rounds with my son before his senior year
All golf course stuff was great.
Special shout out to Jeremy in the pro shop, great help from him.
One of the best courses around
Great layout, great conditions, often perfect weather. I think Bayonet / Black Horse is the best value for the money in the Monterey area. High golf IQ from players who play there often. There was a slow foursome ahead of us (they were older and needed more time) who kindly let our foursome play through. You won't get that awareness and courtesy in many other courses.
