Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course

About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Bring your best short game
Excellent staff offering friendly service everywhere. Fast and undulating greens, together with well-bunkered, humpy, green complexes, make a good short game critical to scoring well. Conditions of greens were great, tees above average, but fairways and rough, nor so good. Looking a little worn - even for mid-January.
One of my favorites
I've played this course many times and always enjoy it. I'd say it is in one of my top 10 that I typically play.
Always in good condition with great practice area and friendly staff. A good value and experience for the Monterey area.
Bayonet/ BlackHorse
Always a great time playing here! One of the most challenging courses in the Bay Area!
Great Conditions for January
Played new years day and there were a couple of muddy spots and/or maintenance areas but for golf in January this course was in great condition. I highly recommend both Bayonet and Black Horse if you get the chance.
Great course!
This is how a golf course should be maintain. Greens were fast but fair, really really good condition for tees, fairways and bunkers
First ever Eagle!
Having an early tee time in December, it was very cold to start. The "Hot Deal" included free range balls so that helped to get a little warmed up before the first hole. Thankfully, the weather warmed up by about hole 4 and was perfect the rest of the way!
The greens were about challenging with some of the slopes. The ball could easily roll off on a few of them depending where you hit, but I like that challenge.
The day was made perfect though on hole 14 after I hit my tee shot that went right of the fairway and was in a some sand/dirt area about 150 yards from the green. I hit a 7 iron and nailed it to card a 2 and my first ever Eagle! I look forward to playing here in the future. There wasn't any aspect of the course and staff that I wouldnt give a 10/10.
Challenging course with fast, elevated greens with multiple levels. Pin positions were such that a small miss ran off the greens by 10+ feet.
KEEP GREENS FAST AND FIRM
Toughest greens in Northern California. Love testing my game here. Greens almost always at tournament speed.
Incredible as always
First time I played early (8:20 tee off)not a real fan of wet grass. Also never realized how much the sun is in your eyes but see know why people do it,our round just over 3 hrs and after first two holes sun was high enough it wasn't an issue.Greens were fast like always and why I come to this course but I see many reveiws cursing that which I don't understand at all.Is it challenging?absolutely and thats why we play here.If you want something not quite as hard play Bayonet, its slightly longer but not near brutal on the greens or bunkers. For people who don't enjoy something that takes all you got,try quail lodge, carmel valley ranch, laguna seca or Del monte all of which will give you a run but not frustrate you if this is not your cup of Tea.But if you wish to challenge yourself and not whine about it then this is it!
