The Vineyard at Escondido

The course is generally in fair shape. The greens are above average, but the fairways, rough , and traps are average to below average. Some holes had two foursomes waiting on the tee box.

It will probably take a week to dry out after getting 3" of rain, but that same rain will have the course in great shape for the next month.

Lots of standing water and lift clean and place was the order of the day, but we got around in 4 hrs despite having to stay on the cart path

Lately it’s been pretty wet and cold and still the course was in pretty good shape. Some of the bunkers were still a little soggy and compacted, luckily I was able to steer clear of most of them. Range is a great way to warm up, but once the sun comes out there’s no issues. It can get pretty windy on the back 9, but that makes for a really fun time. Staff is always friendly and prompt, and the value for what you’re getting is on par with most decent courses in the SD area.

Everything was good about this course, the layout, condition, practice facilities, staff etc. Greens are fast and in excellent shape, very difficult to read for a first timer. The only negative was the pace of play, the round too five hours, we started at 9:10 as a threesome. Not good.

The staff was very helpful after I told him I prepaid with a cart for the round.. he provided a push cart.

This is a good course. But, to charge full rate at $89 and not post here that you punched the greens 6 days earlier is unacceptable. The greens are bumpy, slow and a mess. The pro shop was unsympathetic to this. You have to tell people and give a discount when you punch. Such poor form. Also, the bartenders are rude. Had to wait 15 minutes on the turn because they were serving a Halloween party and ignoring golfers on the turn. Stay away until things change.

First couple holes are challenging to go after if not warmed up. I tend to put driver away and rely on the old 3rd wood to get safely in play, trouble on both sides and not a lot of room for error. Errors can easily compound throughout the course, but especially the first few holes and can set wrong tone for the round. I’ve shot an 82 low an 106 high. A 10 on a hole is not that uncommon for most. Good value, and overall good shape, but traps currently are hard packed & could use fluffing. Play can be really slow at times, especially weekends. If everyone stays in play can go fast, but always dependent on who is in front of you. Can easily have a 2.5 hr or a 5 hr round. For a city owned course, they are definitely working on speeding up play (removing some traps and pesky trees). The facilities are getting a makeover too. Nice touch is having trackman for many of the driving range bays. That is huge in the early mornings as the sun is directly in the eyes (driving range) and almost impossible to track shots. Course is definitely in my rotation of SD courses to play.
