My son at the 18th hole! Photo submitted by Hassellcari on 08/24/2013
Good course!
Good course for beginners. Only problem was evening staff interrupted us on 18th fairway to exit course because they were closing up.
Review
Worse course ever. Green has sand on all 18 holes. Tee boxes were in poor condition. I wouldn’t recommend this course and they have the nerve to charge full price without telling you the conditions of the course.
If not for the greens and bunkers, this would be a great course
I have played this course several times. I keep coming back because the deals are good and, overall, I really like the course. It's pretty, interesting, and has a nice layout that is challenging but fair. It feels like every time I've gone in the past couple years, there are crews out working on the course and I've seen the conditions improve. The staff is always very nice and friendly and it seems like an overall good place to work.
The fairways are always nice. Tee boxes could use a little work, but at least they are all level unlike many other places. The biggest issues here are the bunkers and greens.
The bunkers just flat out need to be redone. They are basically red clay and rocks. If it's rained at all there will be pools of water or they'll be rock hard. It's very difficult to play out of them. I either allow myself to rake and replace, but even that isn't much help.
The other issue is the greens. They are strangely inconsistent in quality, but the one way they are consistent is how slow they are. They are by far the slowest, shaggiest greens I've ever played. You can think you're smacking it really hard and it'll still come to a dead stop before the hole. That said, if they're in good shape, I don't mind too much. They roll true. I went a couple months ago and the greens were in good shape, just really slow. One of the workers said they'd just gotten a new roller and to wait until around the end of May and they should get better. This was the end of June and not only were they just as slow as ever but they were in terrible shape. And it wasn't anything like they'd just been punched. There were just blank patches everywhere. No grass at all, just craters. Not ball marks, either, which is another issue there. The greens are very soft and people don't fix their ball marks. But this was like putting on the surface of the moon. No consistency. So, not only did you have to hit it harder than you think just to get it to the hole, you had no idea how it was going to roll if you hit one of these bald spots.
I really like this course a lot, but even with the great prices, I don't know if I can keep playing there if the greens aren't taken care of. You cannot get any kind of true judge of your game and it takes a lot of the fun out the course. My fingers are crossed that they are in the midst of doing something that I don't know about and things will get better.
Terrible conditions
Course is in terrible conditions. No putting range. Tee boxes are in poor condition. All of the green have sand on them. This was a waste of my time and money. I recommend you avoid playing here.
Cheap - But Fun
Course is kept fine enough to go have fun. Greens have bumps and dead spots, parts of the rough are wild, but heck it wasn't expensive to play 18 with a cart.
The good the bad the ugly
I get the average reviews
Conditional is not great and greens are tiny and slow.. Course was quite wet and will dry out in this heat soon..
Still dropped my spouse at airport and had an early t time and was around in 2 hours.. Hard to find 7th tee.. no signs ..
Still i had a good time and the layout really is pretty good.. only one weak hole - 12 th
Think they switched nines.. Some great par threes - number 6 is awesome.. If they had some money it could be a fine course.. the 19th hole was closed too wet but looked to be a great hole
Lake Spivey on Father's Day Weekend
Played Lake Spivey the day before Father's Day (Saturday), and had a great time. I was a single, and the guy who checked me in told me I could play with the 3-some that was booked at 8:20 with me, or by myself, whichever I prefer, which I liked being given the option. I ended up playing with the other 3 golfers when they pulled up to the #1 while I was getting ready. Really cool guys, enjoyed their banter all day (they were all related by marriage). The tee boxes aren't the best, but that is completely overshadowed by the excellent condition the greens were in. 16 out of 18 were almost perfect (sans a few recent ball marks, which our group fixed along with ours). The other two had maybe one beach ball sized area on each, with the rest the same as the other terrific 16 greens. It matters to me what shape greens are in, because nothing is worse on the green than having an eagle or birdie putt, only to see it bounce all around from dead spots and patches. These were not like that, they rolled absolutely true. They did speed up a tad more after they dried from the early morning storm that had passed. Stopped in the pro shop and grabbed hot dogs at the turn, same guy who checked me in earlier was still there, still being cool to everyone. Really enjoyed it, and if it weren't an hour away from where I live, I would play it much more often.
Still no there yet
The greens were terrible slow. They had duck stuff all around the green.
Enjoyable Course
This was my first time there. Good course for the money. There are a lot of water and sand traps. Played a little slow but it was on a Saturday morning so it’s to be expected. I will go back again when I’m town. Be sure to wear a collared shirt.
A Good Practice Course
I read earlier reviews before booking the course. Most posts were spot-on regarding the tee box conditions, cart paths, fairways, and greens. However, for the price, my round was a good deal.
This course isn’t what it used to be, but I would consider playing it again.
Great place
Fun layout decent conditions greens in great shape
