Wind gives the "links" more challenge

The wind was up, the course was virtually empty. On days like the one we played, where the wind is whipping (2 clubs), the wide fairways and large greens are appreciated.

The course was more green than I recall it ever being. Most of the tees had good coverage and were level. A few were brown and patchy. The fairways were a blend of green and brown and nearly every lie was good. Rough, which I cant remember ever having any was short and green in many areas. Having the rough helps define the holes and is a welcome addition. The native areas between holes were mostly cut down and/or bare. Bunkers are all grass and ranged from rough filled to patchy grass.

Greens, unfortunately, many have areas of disease. The greens and/or areas of greens that were unaffected were nice and smooth and rolling at slower speed. All of them were on the softer side.

Pace was exceptional at under 3 hours.

It’s okay for the price

Don’t like the local policy of have to play with strangers when signing up as a single, common practice, I won’t go back. Staff there is great,

Golf Now requires the rounds purchased in their "special sale" slots to go out as a two-some. Play any other time and the course does not require that. Sorry, but it is the Golf Now rules for a single in those special sale slots that they post on the website!

GREAT VALUE

The Links is soon to become The Cabernet Golf Resort. Aspirations for this are far fetched. A total overall facelift is required to reach those lofty thoughts. However, for the budget minded & improving "Duffer" it can't get better. For the budget aspect to ring true it has to be a DEAL thru whichever company you choose (otherwise it is overpriced). If you stay on the fairways your game will improve & will be very enjoyable. "Shanks" will lead to much frustration. "The Rough" consists of either vineyards or disked earth (i.e. giant dirt clods & reaped hay). Nearly unplayable shots await you in these environs.

Links course

Rode the Blues (6642/70.8/112) in less than 3H as a single in breezy, overcast conditions around 60.

Par 72 layout with five par 3/5's. You start out with two straight par 5's and later have two straight par 3's on the front. You have played three par 5's before your second par 4 which is very unique. Like the layout with numerous dog legs and some of the largest greens I have ever played on. However, the playing conditions are WELL below average.

Probably because it is a links style course, the tee "boxes" are just mowed down areas in the rough. They are a mixture of grasses, winter thin but few unfixed divots. Mostly level and decent.

The fairways were a winter thin mixture of grasses and had good coverage.

The primary rough was winter thin, mowed down and not much of a factor except for unlevel clumps. The secondary rough had been recently cut down but was quite punitive because the straw/grass was just left there in rows about 1' deep. Really easy to lose balls in it.

Most of the traps are now grass bunkers. They are large and have some of the thickest grass on the course in some of them, while others were mowed down much lower. The few actual sand traps are in terrible condition.

The greens had been punched about 3 weeks ago. They looked bad and putted as poor as they looked. Many had large brown areas and a few had dirt spots. They putted bumpy and slow. The one positive was that they held well struck irons very well.

Quick and efficient check-in. I could have played 2-3 balls had I wanted, there was never a golfer within 3 holes of me. Pro Shop is a trailer, no Starter, Marshall or Drink cart. The gas powered carts do not have GPS. The course was marked every 50 yards old school. Could not recommend the course currently with these greens.

Greens were recently punched

Greens were punched a week or so ago and have not been mowed in probably 3-4 weeks. Fairways still have a number of winter thin areas. Tee boxes are in good shape as is the area (skirt) around the green. Range balls need replacing as 1/2 are severely weathered and cracked. I'm not a fan of the gas powered carts.

Interesting links course

I like the layout of this course as it winds around the many vineyards. The greens were in very good condition, however the cart-paths are rutted badly and the rough areas are overgrown. If you hook or fade a ball outside of the fairway, chances are good that your ball won't be found. The fairways are decent but could also use some attention.

Good links course.

Was pretty wet after the big rain last week and it needs mowing. The hay fields and the vinyards has really narrowed it down. Makes it alot tougher than it used to be. Greens are good. We'll be back.

Unique Course

Played this course for the first time. Upon arrival checked in at clubhouse and got a bucket of balls. Nice staff. Clubhouse is surprisingly spacious for being a light structure. Was given old school gas like cart which was only cart outside of clubhouse. Went down to the driving range and hit a bucket. Nice range. Had to ask someone where 1st tee was. No marker or sign.

As advertised it's a link style course. No trees and pretty flat. Hitting fairways is a must or good chance ball is lost in vineyard or green weeds/hay. Not just errant shots are in danger but balls that just miss fairway. On some holes, because of the layout, it's hard to tell what a good shot will be. I had to rely HEAVILY on my gps app to guide me around. Again, even what could be a good shot, could be lost. Even from tee box, it's very hard to decide where to aim. Blind drives are common.

Most of the greens are huge. Lag putting is a needed skill here. Great for Greens in Regulation but bad for total putts. Course is not very challenging but unique. Conditions are nice when ball is in small fairways. Tough to navigate.

Overall, enjoyable afternoon here. This is a course you probably need to play a lot to be comfortable with.

Links Course @ Paso Robles

Played the Blues (6642/70.8/112) in less than 3H as a single in overcast conditions. Previous reviews prepared me for the lack of trees, the all grass or dirt sand traps and the flat lay of the land. You start out with two straight par 5's and later have two straight par 3's on the front. You have played three par 5's before your second par 4 which is very unique. Like the five par 5, five par 3 setup. The par 5's are scoreable, the par 4's are average while the par 3's overall are challenging. (210/231/168/161/181 from the Blues). The layout is decent with numerous dog legs and large greens. However, the playing conditions are below average. The tees were mostly level and decent. Mixture of grasses, winter thin but few unfixed divots. The fairways were a mixture of grasses and had good coverage, winter thin. The primary rough was winter thin, mowed down and not much of a factor. The secondary rough had been recently plowed under and the surroundings of hole after hole looked like a farm about to be planted? All the traps are grass bunkers. Looks like they were converted sand traps? They are large and some of the thickest grass on the course was in a few of them, while others were hardpan. The greens did not look good but they putted decently. Medium speed, relatively smooth and they held well struck irons very well. Been a long time since I have backed up so many irons on greens. The customer service was perfect, quick efficient check-in and they let me out before my scheduled tee time. Pro Shop is a trailer, no Starter, Marshall or Drink cart. The gas powered carts do not have GPS. The course was marked every 50 yards old school. Would only recommend the course currently if you get a deal and are willing to play in thin, spotty conditions.

The course is flat track surrounded by grapevines. The greens are in great shape, but if everyone repaired their ball marks they would be excellent.

Interesting layout, needs some updating

I've always liked the layout of this course, it's predominately a links style with the front 9 playing longer than the back nine (2 long par 5's and 2 long par 3's constitute the first 5 holes). There are great vistas of the mountains and many holes are surrounded by wine vineyards. The greens are immense but in really good condition, however the rough is really rough and there is significant hard pan between fairways, so slices or hooks result in treacherous approach shots. The fairways can use a little TLC as some are uneven and irregular. It appears as though they are building a new clubhouse next to a well laid out driving range.

Fun course!

I’ve played at The Links for many years. It’s a go-to for a fun and fair round. Wide fairways and true greens make for a good day at the course. Not among the worlds most difficult or penalizing tracks, and great score is always a possibility! The fairways are firm and fast, and in good condition. The greens reward a good read and typically are quick. Usually not too crowded, so pace of play typically isn’t an issue. Can get very windy, but golf was meant to be played outdoors, after all. Staff is always friendly. I’ve always been a big fan of this course, and I’ll be back for sure!
