Great course for hackers
I hadn't played at Woodley Lakes for about a decade and I was surprised when my son picked it for his birthday golf game. He explained he was trying out new clubs and wanted a course that was very forgiving. Woodley Lakes is exactly that - wide fairways, no deep bunkers and few water hazards. It made for a fun three hours. We had a 4.30pm tee time and easily got round all 18 before dusk. The greens were in good condition but the rest of the course was patchy at best. We paid $68 for the round, which wasn't too bad - but this was with discounts. I would not have paid $20 more as it simply isn't worth it. There are much better public courses in the area, but this is a good course for hackers and those trying out new gear.
Sad management
If you’ve played here before you know it’s a bit of a goat track, that was expected as I’ve been playing here since 1990..
It seems now that they are only maintaining the greens, they were actually in pretty good shape.
The bunkers are completely overgrown, even green-side.
My biggest complaint was with the starter/desk pro.
I was the ONLY one in the place and he absolutely ignored me, I said “how you doin?”
He turned around and went to the computer in the other room… eventually returned and ignored me again.. mind you my tee time was in 15 minutes.
I repeated my question “how you doing?”
He says “whoa whoa wow!!
You’re acting kinda weird! Whoa”
So I say “by asking you how you are doing?”
He says “yeah man!” “ just take it easy”
..,
Maybe a bad day for him?
But it wasn’t busy or out of any kind of ordinary as far as I could tell,
Then the cart /beverage person( who was very nice) sold me a cider in a can for $11.94!
After my round (I shot 76)
I was starving so I went not the “sports bar “
Also no one but me and one other gal who’d been there for a while 🍸🍸🍸
After waiting for 20 minutes I asked the gal if anyone was working. 10 minutes later a girl finally came over to the bar but she only served the 3dome who had just entered!
Then she turned back around and ignored me some more in spite of me waving and saying “excuse me!”
The burger was good.
No napkins, silverware or anything, she was gone again as soon as she dropped it off..,
I never saw her again.
I left $20 on the bar and walked out.
Sad that this great old golf course is so poorly managed.
Woodley Lakes
Tee boxes need work. Greens were in great condition. Fairways need a lot of work
Great for first timers
Tried out this course for the first time. Easy and fun and I was paired up with another single and a lovely couple. Everything was great until my cart #29 literally broke almost on top of my head while arriving to the 16th green. I was lucky to have caught it when it cracked apart. The shield broke off and the metal poll that keeps the front of the cart steady also broke off. They came and got me a new cart. I asked to speak to the manager for maybe ya know a free round as I’m not a complainer whatsoever, he was on the driving range. I emailed him now twice and still no response. So I’ll see before I call and go from there. Other then that the rest of the staff were excellent and I had a nice round
Another Ray Goates design...
The single most unimaginative golf course architect ever known... boring design, zero challenge not helped by poor maintenance by city employees.
Close but no Cigar!
Love the fact thatvotvis close to home. Thatvis the real draw for us. But the fairways are a mess and the cost is expensive for what you get. It definitely is getting better and the carts are great and have been upgraded. The addition of The Best Ball Bar and Grill has made a big improvement! Please work on the fairways and then it will be worth the premium cost.
One of the best courses to play/hang out at in socal!
Course is in great shape, at least every time I play.
The food and drinks are very good. Great bar atmosphere. Great place to catch the game after a round of golf. I recommend this place to everyone I play golf with.
Forgiving and reliable
This is a great course for a round that will not make you want to break a club.
Horrible Fairways
This course has the best greens in the city…BUT…the rest of the course is garbage. Horrible fairway conditions. After all the rain we’ve had (which should make the grass very lush) the fairways looked like the course superintendent just doesn’t care. I got tired of hitting off hard pan and minimal grass under the ball. Makes it difficult to play wedges at all. You should all be embarrassed. Woodley Lakes is overcharging for this dump. If all you care about is putting, this is your golf course. If you like hitting irons to the green, go someplace else.
Like some have said the greens are shaggy and no good. The aerification still showing a bit. Played in four hours so that’s always nice. Fun day.
