Such potential, but overall disappointing
Shoal Creek is one of those courses that could be so great, but after a round just leaves you scratching your head. They layout is specatacular, but the condition is just not that great. A few years back they spent good money putting champion Bermuda greens in, to only not care for them. Your putts bounce and wiggle, leaving you hitting and hoping that you catch the right bounce and your ball falls in the hole. My group hit so many great putts that somehow managed not to find the hole. One member of our foursome shot a 73, but could have easily been in the 60's had the greens roled true. I felt for him because he was playing so well, and the greens robbed him of his best round ever.
The layout challenges you and requires shot shaping and thought through every shot. The par threes aren't overly challenging and are a welcome breather. The par 5's are ALL great holes and the 4's are an awesome variety. I am a green snob, so the greens just ruin this course for me. It's only $22 to play, so that makes playing this overall disappointment able to be "stomached."' However when I'm invited here I usually take time to consider if I really wanna waste my time. With such great courses like Crystal Lake and Eagle Brooke not much further away, and not much more expensive, this is a tough play for me personally.
Shoal Creek
The course is very fair and has challenging greens. The price is great but the pace of play was horrible; it took almost 3 hours to play the front 9 holes. There were kids in the group in front of us running around the course and playing on the greens. This is the third time I've been subjected to extremely slow play here, a marshal would be nice.
In Griffin..
The course is an old country club. I would say it's prime was pre-millennium. Tee boxes are pretty rough on a couple holes, even from the boxes less played. Fairways tend to be okay for the most part but you are often left with thin lies. Greens are the best part of the course. They roll fast and can be tough to putt on. There are some different types of grass trying to grow into the greens though, which could be bad if it doesn't get taken care of this year. They did reshape the bunkers recently so they look sharp. Overall it's a good deal and honestly a pretty solid layout.
Because it is early spring, there are many places to hit the ball on the ground when the game is played because the grass is up.
Beautiful Setting
Fairways are ok, but not luxurious mostly because of lack of rain. I think it is a fun and challenging course and well worth the fees.
Dry
The course is dry, the staff is dry, the seniors have no golf etiquette. The course could be amazing. The wrong people are in charge here. I won't be back!

18 holes of pleasure!
First time playing The Club at Shoal Creek, considering I live downtown Atlanta. It was a nice drive, but well worth the 38 mile commute. GolfNow offered a more than affordable round of golf. One of the nicest and well manicured courses that I've played in the Atlanta area. The greens rolled beautifully on all 18 holes. Tee boxes and fairways were in great shape. Played the blues, regardless, the course played nice and long. 4 par 3's, 10 par 4's, and 4 par 5's. Certainly, a challenging, yet fun course. Staff was friendly. I will absolutely play this course again in the very near future.
Really Enjoy This Layout!
The course was in good to very good condition with the greens rolling true. The layout is really excellent with a lot of "what you see, is what you get" holes. It plays very fair but helps if you've been around it more than once...it was our second. We used a rangefinder app which really helped in a few situations. Great value and we will be back!
Shoal Creek/First Time Playing
The custiomer service was excellent. Staff was very friendly and helpful. My first outing on this course, I worked here briefly as a chef's assistant back in the early 70s, prior to my golfing days. The course is quite challenging, lots of elevations and doglegs. Greens were in excellent shape, most guarded by multiple large bunkers. The first par 3 hole has to be reached by hitting over water, which I failed to reach even with a mulligan! The course gives you a few short but challenging holes from the white tees, though the course plays longer and more tougher from the blue markers, and even moreso from the black markers. A refreshing alternative to the two other courses I normally play in Griffin.I had very little, if any, recall of the course's layout when I work here way back then, however, since the day I started playing golf, I always dreamed of playing here. Can't wait for round 2.
Thanks for the update empaul02. I'm putting it on my list for next week.
The Course
Good course for the money !
Revived from the Ashes
Formerly Griffin Country Club, now under new ownership since 2013, I was pleasantly surprised to find, that Silver Haired Southern Gentleman, who has owned Hickory Hills Golf since 1980, is the new owner of this Club now.
The par 4's play like par 5's and the par 5's play like par 6's! If that is legal...
Wide open fairways surround each holes, and if You like hitting the long ball, this is the course for you, because...It plays LLLLLOOOONNNNGGGG....
Summer sun has dried it a bit, but it's perfectly playable and well kept, greens are firm and fast, with a bare spot, or two on some holes...
Great overly friendly and helpful staff.
Their sandwich counter is simply the best bargain, on any Golf Course, I've played; $5.00 will get you a Hand Made sandwich, bag of chips and a 12 oz soft drink... Yummm
Best Pro Shop, I've seen, (except Hickory Hills) a Golfer's paradise.
You in Atlanta, make the trip, it's worth your while!
Not what it used to be
I grew up playing this course. Course isn't it great shape at all. Hasn't been for a couple of years. Very dry and no grass in a lot of fairways. Staff in pro shop are not very friendly. Was not worth $30. I had 2 tee boxes where I didn't even tee up my ball because the entire tee box was too hard to even stick a tee in the ground. Greens however were in good shape. Thad the only thing good. But that doesn't help everything else. Save the money.

Don't know how you can see grass on fairways look great to me I there every week.
This course was a pleasure
It is a welcome change to play a course in great condition with real sand that exhibits multiple changes in layout which keeps it interesting and a challenge. Hats off to the staff and all for an affordable price. This was my second time here and i will definitely be back.
Good for the price.
Difficult to play as it lies without damaging your clubs. Lots of bare sand and rocky patches around the fairways and greens, so I took it as ground under repair, even though it was not marked. Three of the cups were too deep so the pins would not sit straight. I fixed one, but could not pull the others up by hand.
Overall, it was fine for $20, but the $35 weekend price is way too much for the condition.
Bad Review?
I'm not sure why the other golfer gave a bad review to the course, and to the staff. I have played several rounds with a few friends, and have yet to have a bad experience. During my last round, my playing partner and I had to leave, due to an unforeseen circumstance, and the staff, were more than willing to give us a rain check, for the holes we did not play. I like playing the course, and will return to play again.
Old Griffin Country Club
It's an average course. Conditions of course were ok, some areas really good, some not so good. Tee boxes were pretty hard and the greens were fine. Got a deal for 20 on the weekend, would play again at that rate.
Sad
What used to be a nice course is now in real need of help. The greens were in good shape. The cart paths are very rough. There are a lot of bare patches on the fairways. Another example of a course not able to adapt to the times and changes in ownership so far.
i will never go back
course is ok staff were very rude and for that and the number of golf courses around here I would never play here again
