Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
Donald Ross Would Be Shocked
I was excited to play a Donald Ross course and because it was the pride of Savannah, Georgia, and its only municipal course, was sure I would have a great time.
The staff was nice and there didn't seem to be very many players. They had fairly new carts and the club house was adequate. The course had no yardage books nor did the scorecards have any pictures of the hole's layout.
When I drove to the 1st tee, there was no tee number or yardage marker and I had to decide whether the tee box markers about 40 feet to the right of the dirt cart path was the place I was to tee off from.
The fairways were not terrible but could have used a closer mowing. They had patches of crabgrass and poa anna in many places.
The rough had a lot of damage from mowers that had apparently been stuck on several holes. It was also quite deep and full of crabgrass and weeds.
I finally found a restroom on #14, that was hidden from view and I got directions from a crew member who was driving around in a gator.#9 does not take players back to the clubhouse.
The bunkers had no drainage and were either water hazards or mudslides.
The greens had poa Anna on many and a couple were like playing obstacle golf reminiscent of the Plinko game on the Price is Right. Most of the greens had severely damaged patches where they were either not properly watered or insects and fungus was not killed quickly. On some greens the drainage looked as if someone cut a ditch into them.
The website said the course had been reconditioned to the old specifications Donald Ross built. Usually the fairways are tree-lined and narrow, but these were mostly like a links course.
Savannah should be embarrassed that their "Gem" municipal course is in this condition. It is hard to believe a city like Savannah won't put up the money to fix this course into the quality Donald Ross designed it to be.
I would probably have scored at least 6 or seven strokes lower if I could have putted or didn't lose golf balls in the fairways.I don't know if the maintenance crews are inexperienced, underpaid, or understaffed.
I play a 1919 Donald Ross course in Wilson that is in much better shape and only $30 on the weekend. And their municipal course is immaculate.
I will drive down here next year and see if the City of Savannah has fixed this course. If they don't, I'll play somewhere else.
Meh
The greens on a handful of holes were pretty chewed up. The place didn't look like it has been cut in a 2 weeks and the rough was prime to lose balls in plain sight. This place has the nerve to have gps carts but almost no cart paths so found myself getting stuck quite often. In short they could have taken the money from the carts and just improved the course. If it wasn't for the deal time with a promo spend your 50 dollars someplace else.

Better
kudos on the 3 green restorations. they are holding up pretty well so far. they are making an effort to improve the conditions. the fairways and tee boxes are in pretty good shape.
Thank you for your review! We appreciate your positive feedback on our green restorations and efforts to improve the conditions. It's great to hear that the fairways and tee boxes are in good shape.
BACON PARK (JUST BAD)
This has to be one of the top 3 worst courses in Savannah.
Tee boxes.. fairways…greens ALL AWFUL..
Tree limbs was laying in the tee box on the first hole at 11:00 course opens at 7:30..
Grass clippings left on the course..
So thick we actually lost a couple balls that we know for sure landed in the middle of the fairway..
This place needs a total shut down and shown some serious attention..
If I wanted to play a round of golf and this was the only course available I would pass and just sit at home..
I was beyond disappointed..
We are sorry to hear about your negative experience at our golf course. We apologize for the condition of the tee boxes, fairways, and greens as well as the presence of tree limbs and grass clippings on the course. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention.
Whoa !

Bacon Park G.C. Review
Good course to score well on. I shot my personal best on it this week! Pretty forgiving with little water to deal with. A few of the greens had some bare spots. But I know they are addressing this as they had a couple of temporary greens in play while they are resodding the regular greens. They could also use some better signage for the direction they want carts to go from hole to hole. Especially since they have the GPS monitored golf carts which shut down if you enter the wrong place and the cart paths are not easy to find on some holes. Overall, a good course for the money. Also, kudos to Dick, one of the starters who came by checking on everyone…a great guy!
Fine for the price but greens were almost unplayable.
I got a discount but I couldn’t imagine having to pay the full price. A lot of the greens were under repair so the “temporary green” was just a pin at the end of the fairway (unputtable). And the greens that weren’t under repair were such terrible quality it was almost as bad as putting on the “temporary green”.
We apologize for the inconvenience you experienced during your visit. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration to improve our service and the quality of our greens. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review.
Back 9 closed to carts ** 3 greens closed on front 9 for new sod ***
**WARNING** bunch of greens currently closed for new sod *** back 9 only open for walking !!
Was told this when I arrived, after paying and calling to switch tee time still wasn’t told this until I arrived to play. Something every course doing repairs NEEDS TO TELL CUSTOMERS PRIOR TO BOOKING OR PLAYING.
Happy to see they are trying to improve conditions. Hopefully it will be playable soon. But not now.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by our current closure of new sod and only having the back 9 open for walking. We appreciate your feedback and will ensure that future customers are informed about these conditions prior to booking or playing. Thank you for your understanding and we hope you will visit us again once the improvements are complete.
Bacon Park- Okay for the price
While we are playing the course was under a major renovation so my opinion is clearly derived from how we saw this course on the day we played. We were given the option of playing the first nine holes twice with cart or walking the back nine due to refurbishments, we chose the latter. There was also a few bachelor parties and blitzes on the course this day so the rate of play was absolutely glacial. Price was $40/person so it was nothing to complain about; I just wish I had a better first experience since I live less than five minutes from Bacon Park.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us, u314164137931. We are going to pass on your feedback to the team. Thanks for visiting Bacon Park Golf Course, and we hope to see you again in the future.
Greens are in rough shape
Course is easy to play..wide fairways, minimal hazards, not too long, grass length of rough not a problem. However, the greens were in terrible condition. All had large spots of bare ground

Worst course I’ve ever played and not even cheap!
Easily the worst course I’ve ever played. Literally had sand traps and mud holes on at most of the greens and it looked like the pine needles hadn’t been blown off in days. Couldn’t tell where fairway ended and rough begin. The attitude of the old man behind the counter was even worse than the course. I paid more to play here than I pay at much nicer courses. Won’t be back.

Please Fix Greens
The greens are terrible, it’s like putting down a dirt path except worse with craters and bare spots everywhere. I like the course layout and just about everything else but when it comes to loving the sport, nothing ruins it worse than bad greens management. A drinks cart wouldn’t hurt either, seems to be common at other golf courses.

Player be ware...
The greens were very pour, definitely not worth the money paying for in condition of greens, and some fairways not cut like should be.

Average at best
After playing Hunter the day before, and being a Ross course, this place was a let down. I’m sure at one time this was a premier course and would have been a lot of fun. Greens were terrible. Layout was boring and it would have been nice to know as first timers that there was no water available on the course and that you don’t go by the clubhouse at the turn. In this case you really don’t get what you pay for.
