Nice Layout

We played as a twosome and felt like we were the only ones on the course most of the time. The layout is nice and pretty flat. Water comes into play on some holes. Some of the tee boxes were pretty bare. Overall it’s a nice experience and we’re planning to play it again.

Excellent amateur golf experience

After navigating the Army Base security and wandering a few lovely base roadways, the golf was great! I will definitely be back…

Easy to play hard to get to!!

Unfortunately it took me 40 minutes to find the way into the base! Several gates were either permanently or temporarily closed or blocked off! The course is a good layout but in mediocre condition, but you get what you pay for!! Any day on a golf course is better than a day at work!!

Hunter is a value

The pace of play was very good. Fairways were in good shape except for some bare areas. 4 or 5 greens on the back had bare spots. Not a tournament course but if you are okay with moving your ball a foot or two to a better hitting area, then the course is playable. Good value

Avoid: Not easy access!

Didn't get to play due to the misleading access policy and unhelpful staff. You have to fill out an electronic form to get access to the base. Once you get clearance, you need to bring a printed document and ID to the base. Headed to the course to get there about 40 minutes before our tee time. Unfortunately, didn't realize the access gate was on the other side of the base from the golf course. Had to wait almost thirty minutes at the guard station to get our guest pass. We did not get any information about how to get to the course once cleared. Once we found the route, it took another 8 minutes to get to the club house. At this point, we were ~20 minutes late for our tee time. We were told we would need to pay for another round if we still wanted to golf. If it is your first time, you should get to the base an hour before your tee time. Better yet, find another course that doesn't make it this difficult to play. GolfNow should give more warning about all the time and effort required to play a round.

I'm actually not surprised by this. The golf course is on an army base and to get access to this base you need to get clearance. It's not hard to get clearance but no one really tells you the steps. So here are the steps for those who come across this comment.

1) Bring DL and insurance card (just in case).

2) Go to Main gate located on Montgomery St. It's called the Hunter Army Airfield Visitor Control Center. Google Maps will show you

3) Tell the guard you want to play golf, they will take your DL and tell you where to park

4) You will most likely get a 3 month pass, maybe 2 months. Not sure of the policy. This can take anywhere to 5 minutes to 20 depending on the number of people in line.

4) From this gate you go straight until reach Leonard Neal Street. It's the first real left you can make. Take that to N Lightning Rd. The road ends so its a T section. Go left. Follow this road entirely until it merges with Perimeter Rd. Continue down perimeter and you will see the golf course on your right. Keep following until you see the entrance on your right.

Give your about 30 to 40 minutes to get through the gate and to the course. You might be very early if all goes smoothly. Better early than late.

Course conditions are deplorable. Losing balls a foot off the fairway is ridiculous.

Won’t be back.

Booked my tee time for wrong day, most courses if you call them they will switch you to next day. They would not. So paid double. When arriving be prepared to go to 2 different places to “check in” which takes about 20 minutes and you need valid ID and a clean record. Staff was nice. Course conditions were terrible. Greens were overgrown and rolled very very slow. Bunkers were hard mud. Fairways overgrown with lumps of cut grass everywhere, with your random holes from animals. Made bacon park look like a PGA tour course. Save your money and golf else where in the Savannah area.

Walked

Better than expected!

I was happily surprised with this course. I played by myself and walked the front nine, rode the back nine (front was cart path only so I preferred to walk). As a mid-single-digit handicapper I played the Blues, which was long and challenging. Lots of strategic play to try and set up approach shots, and several holes that forced decision-making to go for it or lay up. Greens were good, fairways were mostly green and manicured, cold water available every 3rd hole. Overall a good course that can give experienced golfers a good challenge!

Sub-par

Overall course conditions were just not in good shape. I guess this is a cheaper course but still I thought the course was in pretty bad shape even for the price. Upside was layout was unique and pace of play was good.

A soupy mess

The course was well maintained and the staff very friendly. The problem is that it does not drain well. Fairways were a soupy mess for most of the course. Large puddles throughout and soft nearly everywhere else. After a day of having to walk back and forth because it was cart path only, we all left covered in mud. Would not play again if it has rained at all in the past week.

Terrible condition

We played on a beautiful sunny day, however, the course had standing water in all fairways, tee boxes and bunkers. Do not play if there has been any rain in the last 2 weeks, otherwise you will be leaving soaking wet and covered in mud. This was a miserable experience. The course should be closed if conditions are half as bad.

Good course, great value

Nice course, that shows it’s age a bit. The tee boxes are a little rough, but the fairways are in good shape. Almost all of the greens sit up on plateaus making the approach shots really matter. The greens could use some love. The course is laid out beautifully and the buzz of aircraft is always a welcome sound. Hunter is a great value and well worth a round.

Typical Military Course

What you would expect for a military course on an old base that's close to closing. Not much grass , poorly manicured and a real basic layout.
