Nice course..tight with many different elevation changes throughout....nice staff..
I guess this place is going semi-private which becoming a common trend with most private clubs nowadays in order to attract more players. I found out through Golf now that this place is available for play if booked through GolfNow.
The layout is fun and challenging with narrow, sloped fairways surrounded by trouble! Needless to say, my driver had the day off for most of my round. This track is heavily wooded with various elevation changes. No. 16 is a tough hole which is all about the second shot...I'm gonna leave it at that. My fav hole is par 3 No. 11.
Tough tight course with great layout, greens were aerated when we played
This is a great course with a really tough layout. Short yardage wise, but the design makes up for every bit of distance -- it plays much longer than the card. Course in general was in phenomenal shape, with the exception of the greens. These were brutally aerated when we played...which was unfortunate as I usually judge a course by green quality. Will play again once greens are in better shape.
A Gem if Properly Conditioned
Having played this course 8-10 times now, it is one of the most interesting and challenging layouts in the metro Atlanta market. I personally don't think it is a good fit for the higher handicap golfer due to the strong requirement of accuracy, difficult rough, fast sloping greens, and penalties for mis-hits. However, can be a fun challenge for a mid handicap or better player who is somewhat on their game, as the diversity of the holes, elevation changes, and sheer beauty are exceptional. Plays MUCH more difficult than its yardage would indicate; at around 6300 yards the gold tees are more than many golfers can handle. Local knowledge is very important at Smokerise, so playing the course 2-3 times allows one to take mental notes for placement and club selection on many holes.
My enjoyment of being back to play the course this week were tempered somewhat by the fact that the greens were bumpy from the aerations about 2 1/2 weeks ago and the bunkers were in terrible condition. Maintenance of the course otherwise was fairly good in terms of tees and fairways, which are fairly tight, but not at the level I had come to expect from this course in the past.
All in all a very interesting course to play with a great layout, but not the overall level of conditions I would have hoped for and played difficult, as usual.
Great course
This golf course was a pleasure to play, the course layout is great and the course is well maintained.
Mental Fortitude
I had the pleasure of playing a round of golf at Smoke Rise Golf Club this past Saturday (June 3rd) and let me say that it's a pretty good course. Challenging is an understatement as most of the holes are either Elevated or sit down low. You tee off on the first hole going down a slight incline with the hole around the bend to the right.
Playing this course you'll have to definitely trust the feel of your clubs and your Tee shots will need to be EXACT. Some holes you don't want to touch your Driver but make your 3 or 5 Wood your best friend.
Pace of play was not too bad when we played but I definitely recommend you get an early Tee Time or go later in the day. Warming up on the range was nice and the guys in the Pro Shop were very helpful.
Mediocre
Expected more from this course for $50+. You're much better going down to Wolf Creek for cheaper and a much better course. The course was pretty short. The greens were OK; not firm just rolled really hard. They need a marshall out there. Overall perfectly mediocre. A lot of better options in the Atlanta area.
Worth the drive
First time playing this course and it was certainly a pleasure. Challenging and fun. Staff was helpful and accommodating.
Gone down hill
Used to be a top course in metro Atlanta. A lot of time has passed since those days. Rough is really overgrown and clubhouse landscape maintenance needs work. Fairways were okay, but rarely did you have a level lie. Lots of slopes to either side of the fairways. Several blind shot approaches.
Greens were "extremely" firm and dry. If you can get a deal for less than $30 it will certainly test your target golf skills.
Average at best
It's an average course,
The fairways are in due need of water and seeding.
The greens were decent
Great Low Pressure Day
Relatively few golfers gave me the opportunity to work on my game and play multiple balls. The course is in good shape but could still use some money.
Hit it Straight
Course is in great condition and the greens are about a 9. The pace of play was great.#2 if there is a front pin and you are long (4 Putt). The 4th hole tee shot should be 20 yards to the right of the 150 yard stick .Good accurate drives on this course are a must, but you better have your putter working for the fast greens.
Excellent shot makers course!
There were a lot of narrow fairways or sharp doglegs. Troy the starter was one of the nicest starters I've ever dealt with. Nice greens and very nice views.
Good layout but no control over cart rides
First playing at this course as a four-some. We all liked the course layout and how beautiful the course is. All was good except encountering with these young kids. They were riding their cart (five of them playing as a group having their own cart). At the hole number 2, we let a two-some went in front of us. So we ended with these five young kids right behind us pushing to hurry up to play. Of course they could play much faster than we were since each of them could get to his ball after each shot. We had to rush each hole. All good but no control over the course management. I think one kid works there. Will try one more time in the future at this course. But If this happens again, will stop playing there.
Great Course for the price
Overall the course is in great shape, and for the price, (after 4pm) it's a great deal. My only issue, and this is with most of the course in the metro, Is pace of play. This is also one of the reasons I've only played three times this year.
Refuse to do 6 hour rounds....
Aside from that, SR is the most challenging course in the Stone Mountain area bar none.
First Time Impression
This is the first time I've played this course since it's private but they do allow public to play. Be prepared to give your legs a nice workout! This is a very hilly course! Even if you're in the middle of the fairway you'll be hitting above and below your feet as well as uphill and downhill! The club house attendant said it's a sho markers course and he was right. For most of the holes if you're a big hitter that hits every shot for distance, good luck! You will definitely need to scale it back due to all the twists and turns. I'm not a big distance hitter so this course was good for my type of play. Most holes are lined with trees and low brush on one or both sides so if you hit one there the odds are it will be hard to find. Fairways are still working their way out of being dormant but we're in great shape overall. The greens were very fast and that was consistent for every hole. I can't really rate the off course amenities since we didn't use them so that's the reason I rated them average. Overall it was a great experience and will play again when the opportunity allows. Thanks for allowing a number of tee times open to the public.
Good shape
Pretty good course, greens are in great shape, lots of doglegs
