Needs a lot of help
We made this tee time on the same morning we played which is why we ended up here. This course needs a lot of help. I hadn’t played here in years and was given a stark reminder of why, on this day. The gentleman in the pro shop was awesome. The course was hard as a rock, most bunkers and tee-boxes are bare. I would say this course is good for beginners and people trying to learn the game but, the greens are very small. The engine on the cart we had was stalling so badly, it often drifted backwards (on inclines) and not just a few feet either so, be careful. The pace was super slow with elderly groups too. I won’t likely be back.
Great Course
Saw some bad reviews online but honestly this was a great course for the price. Greens were rolling, tee boxes were in good shape and pace of play was perfect. I plan on getting back out there next week. I would definitely recommend!
Nice staff, TERRIBLE course
Hate to leave a bad review as the staff here was so friendly, but the course is garbage. This is the third time I’ve played here, given 2 chances already that maybe it was an “off season” for the course… The 17th and 18th holes are decent, and that’s about it. 75% of the tee boxes have ZERO grass on them- rocks and dirt only. The cart paths were probably paved in 2005 and haven’t been touched since- it is a ROUGH ride, assuming your cart makes it the whole way through (2 out of 4 of our gas carts died of engine failure before the turn). It’s really a shame as this was probably once a nice course. It’s simply not maintained at all and it WILL tear up your clubs. It’s a safer bet to hit into the rough and hope for some pine straw rather than hitting the center of the fairway, where your ball will likely land on a pile of gravel. I hit a bucket of range balls before the start and the majority of them were gashed by lawnmower blades; some split completely in half out of the machine. Whomever owns this course, shame on you- the course will be a subdivision in no time.
Play it!!!!!
It’s a challenging course that’s well worth playing. If you just enjoy playing golf and aren’t too worried about the country club experience this is a fun place to play.
A great deal
Course is challenging and fun. Biggest issue is the car paths. Barely drivable.
Conditions are rough
Driving range is up against the first hole with no defining border. Cart paths rough. Some tee boxes were so bad that we couldn't tell where they started. Conditions in general were bad. There also was alot of older groups playing the course so it was extremely slow paced.
Poor conditions
Course layout is great. I really liked the challenging aspect of the holes and great features however the fairway was hard as a rock with very little grassy the point that if you hit the fairway it was likely to roll into the trees with any king of slope. The greens were ok except a few were patched and cracked. If the tee box was used it was hard as a rock and many holes were shortened by almost 100 yard with temporary boxes. The clubhouse was old and in need of serious repairs. This has potential to be a good course but needs better grounds management and upkeep.
Cart path and tee box need repairs
Course layout fairly ok, especially cart path and tee box needed attention other than that every else was OK.
What happen to southland
The course is in a bad of shape as I’ve seen it in some years. Fairways were rock hard and barely any grass some places. Greens were mostly decent with a few exceptions. There was no starter or anyone helping to manage the logjam on the course that turned a 4hr round to a 5 hour round. Walking up to the clubhouse gave the impression of an abandon course. Over grown grass and bushes, club house in need of repairs and better offerings for a $70 round price. There are other courses that will give a better experience in that price rang e or less.
Tee boxes
The greens were nice but the tee boxes and access to them need a lot of repair
Fun to play
Older course but great layout. Great value compared to other area courses.
Like a Snickers, continues to satisfy
Southland continues to satisfy the golfer who is looking for a fun, challenging muni at a reasonable price. Not much grass on some tee boxes, and yes, the cart paths are bombed out. But the bones of the course are good. Many of the holes are far more interesting than your average muni as the course winds around the woods and granite outcroppings in the shadow of Stone Mountain. There are some fun short dogleg part 4s (4, 11, 14, 15). The 5s are all birdie-able for even short hitters. And best of all, Southland takes care of the greens. They’re shaggy right now, but they are as true as any muni in the area. I do wonder whey they’ve never gotten a course and slope rating. Nevertheless, Southland still satisfies.
Fair and honest review
Southland has such personality in its layout. The views are great and rival what stone mountain have to offer. Greens are great (could be rolled a little more), fairways are in decent shape with a few spots as expected. Tee boxes, cart path, and bunkers need help and this course could be top of the line. This has potential to be one of the best tracks around if they get someone to invest in it. Bring your A game too as it can be challenging but not long.
