Hapuna Golf Course
About
Hapuna Golf Course stretches along the beautiful Kohala coastline before rising to over 700 feet above sea level. The snow-topped Mauna Kea volcano serves as a dramatic backdrop and there are seemingly endless views of the Pacific. Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay collaborated to create a visually stunning links course that utilizes the natural contours of the landscape and silky fescue grasses. The design team has received praise for not only the challenge of the design but also for how seamlessly it blends into the existing environment. Palmer incorporated several risk-reward opportunities, especially with the par 5s, the14th is a good example. There are many ways to play this hole, which features a large ravine on the right and a wide, but shallow green. Long hitters can reach the green in two but short hitters prefer two shots and a par 3.

A very varied terrain
Pace of play was very slow group 2 ahead of us more than 2 holes behind....the views made it tolerable....
Nice track, very windy
When I checked in for my round and asked why there were so few other players, they said it was too windy for most people. I didn’t appreciate how much wind there was until I got onto the course. Wind was howling! I’ve played in wind before and this was as strong as any time! It was as much as 5-club wind.
Another factor affecting my round was greens condition. They had not fully recovered from aeration and were quite shaggy. However, their slow speed was appropriate for wind conditions.
Overall, I liked the course layout, routing, and great views. If you find a day with only a light breeze it’s a good course to play.
Course was very challenging especially with a little wind but it was in beautiful shape with scenic views.
Nice course, unfortunately with just aerated greens
We are on vacation and tried this course as it is near where we are staying. The positives. Nice course with lots of variety in hole layouts. Decent rental clubs sets. Virtually empty. We played our round in under 3 1/2 hours. Never waited on a shot. The negatives. We found out when we checked in at the pro shop that the greens were aerated YESTERDAY. While this MAY have been displayed on the Golf Now site it was not obvious as I did not see it. I was sensitive to this as the course we had planned to play was just aerated this week so we chose to change plans to Hapuna. Needless to say, lots of 3 putts. Golf club rental at Hapuna is usurious at $135 for 2 sets. I know it is a pain, but if you come to Hawaii and plan to golf more than 3 times, bring your own clubs! Finally, after all the 3 putts, the bar was closed (appears permanent as the furniture was gone). I sure could have used a gin and tonic.
2 thumbs up
Nice course with free golf range . Can’t beat the price. Definitely would go back
Fantastic golf course
Ocean & mountain views on almost every hole! Greens were rolling fast! Goats grazing in the distance! Fantastic layout and overall wonderful course! You won’t be disappointed!
Nice course
Really enjoyed the round. Course was in great shape. Greens were immaculate. Play only slowed the last 4 holes - which I hear is typical. Look for great rates on golf now.
Amazing ocean views
Worth every penny! Not the easiest course, but mid-high handicappers (like me) can still have fun! Amazing ocean views on several holes. Rented clubs (TM Zims) that were in good shape, so really no complaints! And if you're ok with nature, it's a plus, since there are tons of birds and grazing goats that make it even more fun. Trust me, goats grazing are better than coyotes staring at you from feet away like in so many courses in SoCal;(
Hapuna golf course
We had a great time playing at Hapuna Golf Course. We moved along well and found the course to be in nice shape. Little narrow little short from the regular tees but very fun afternoon.
Spectacular Course
This is a great course. It wiggles it’s way up and down the lava flow with spectacular vistas a some difficult blind dog legs. The course is in great condition. The Bermuda rough is just that- thick and spongey. Greens are nothing short of perfection with minimal blemishes. Like it’s step-sister? Cousin maybe? Mauna Lani, it’s worth playing.
I did encounter some slow play, a very slow foursome. They let several parties play through at the turn and the universe was again the way it should be! It was a great outing!
