Slow play
It to us 5 :30 to play eighteen holes. Condition of course was very bad. They do not have enough golf carts had to wait for carts to come it. I'm done playing there. There are much better golf course out there .
slow play
On a Saturday at 11 this course took 5 1/2 hours to play. Never saw a Ranger pushing the pace. The course is a little rough for the end of May. Greens and fairways had bare spots. Wide open with a lot of sand traps, not much water. Staff was nice, beer girl came around frequently.
Pace of play horrible
Quit after 15 holes for we had five hours in with still three holes to play. No rangers around to police the pace of play. Course was in horrible shape all the greens had some sort of weather damage from the winter. Complain to person in charge about pace of play and was told he did everything he could when in fact he did nothing. Will not waste my time going to this course again.
not bad.
Good place to visit and play.
Fairway is good and easy.
Great deal for this course
The course was in decent condition. A few of the fairways & greens had some torn up grass from the rough winter we had in Illinois this year. Other then that the course was in good shape & will only get better.
can be tough if you play the wrong tees for you
bunkers needed a little tlc but over all nice shape
Very Nice Course, and friendly staff.
Course played very slow. Waited around 10-15 on every hole. It took 5 1/2 - 6 hours to play 18 holes - far too slow.
Nice couse, but rock hard sand traps.Beware of aeration.
There were 3 in our group on Wednesday afternoon 10/2/13. I booked one day in advance on Tuesday 10/1/13. Upon arriving at the course there were about 10 people in front of us complaining about the poor course conditions of the greens from aerating and the overabundance of sand on the greens. The sand traps here are always dry and rock hard. Some people were very vocal about not receiveing any advanced warning regardding the issues and requested some sort of compensation for their round. We observed and listened and I thought the management was cordial but did not offer any type of discount for the miscommunication of the conditions.
Hard not to have fun on the course....
Highland Woods is a great course to play giving you a good mixture of challenge and forgiveness! The downfall to this course is the slow pace of play. Had a 11:30 tee time and walked off the 18th green around 6pm!!!!! Totally bogus. Good value for the money if you can stand the wait and lack of pace this course seems to deal out!
A good course for a beginning golfer who doesn't mind a five hour round
I've played Highland Woods many times over the years. When I first started playing golf Highland Woods was a nice challenge. As my skill improved I began to migrate away from Highland Woods to play more difficult courses. I now play Highland Woods when I'm struggling with my game and I need to play a course to "lighten the load" so to speak.
A word of warning however. More often than not the pace of play at Highland Woods is very slow particularly in the afternoon. So I choose my tee times carefully. I try to play the course in the morning on weekdays.
The greens are generally in good condition. The fairways can be "iffy" and the rough is usually troublesome. The rough is generally short enough to allow you to find your golf ball but it's long enough to offer a challenge.
There are plenty of trees on the course and you'll encounter water occasionally. The 6th hole is most challenging in this regard. Water comes into play on the right side of the fairway for almost the entire length of the hole. This isn't particularly unique except for the fact that the water is difficult to see on your second shot and the fairway slants towards the water. So the best advice I can give you for this hole is STAY LEFT all the way to the green.
If you're planning on playing this course as a single and you want to use a cart, plan on being paired with a stranger. However, if you're lucky enough to be playing on a slow day, you'll generally be allowed to be in a cart by yourself. I find this is true for most of the courses that I play.
I think the normal greens fee for this course is way too high. I find this is true for all of the Billy Casper managed golf courses in the area. That's why you should use GolfNow to find special rates. You can also use the forest preserve web site to look for special rates.
One last thing. If you play during the winter regardless of the temperature, this course is open all year. So I play this course frequently during the winter months until the heavy snow falls. However, call the course before you play to ensure they're offering winter rates. I've been UNpleasantly surprised a couple of times at the greens fee during November, December and January.
Good Course - Slow Play
This is a wide-open course that is slightly longer than normal. Good course for a big hitter. My opinion is that they pack the tee times too tightly. Pace of play was REALLY slow. It didn't appear that any one group was slowing things up. I didn't see any open holes. I just think they tried to fit too many people on the course at one time.
Very forgiving course
Overall the course was in very good condition and the greens were in very good shape. Tee boxes were very level. Nice course would play again.
Everything great but the speed of play
The course was already running 15-20 min behind schedule when we arrived and did not have enough carts available. We ended up teeing off 30 min after our scheduled tee time and it continued to be backed up through most of the round, leading to a 5+ hour play! Great course, but the pace of play needs to be improved drastically!
Wouldnt want to walk the course. Course in good shape.
Course in good shape. Pretty wide open. Greens are pretty fast. Front nine seems to have more roll and bounce than back nine.
Longest Round Ever
5 3/4 Hrs. on a Saturday. When I arrived, there were 12 golfers waiting for carts. Tee times were running about 30 minutes late.
great course, poor supervision
6hr plus round, are you kidding every hole was backed up never saw a course ranger, had to wait 20 min for a cart even at $39.00 pp never again
Favorite forest preserve course for money
Highland woods is one of my favorite courses. I'm a 14 handicap and from the blue tees its very challenging. There isn't any holes that aren't fun to play! Last year the golfnow customers were able to purchase a tee time for between 21-28 dollars this year the cheapest I've seen it has been 29.00 but still worth the price. Difinitely my favorite forest preserve course for the money!
Good Conditions, Slow Pace of Play
Highland Woods was is a fun course to play but Sunday Morning Pace of Play was pretty slow. 18 holes took 5+ hours as the course was packed. Conditions were nicer than most public courses, but the greens were pretty slow.
Delay, delay after another delay!!!
I love this course but everytime, i mean everytime I play this course they have no carts available, start at least 1/2 hour to 45 minutes after scheduled tee time and no course marshal's ever. The pace of play is slower than slow, I'm talking 5-6 hour rounds and when you tell them about it they won't do anything about it. The staff is rude, uncaring and nowhere to be seen on the course. This is a joke that nobody at Casper golf care enough to do anything about the pace of play, conditions or staffing problems?? Way beeter options in the area than this place! I'm done now and forever with this course after many, many chances!!!!!!! Very unhappy.........
This course has holes varying greatly in length and has obstacles.
I was very satisfied with the course. I have played it before and yesterday was no different.
