Donald Ross Design and a Nice Course
Enjoyed my round here. I had not gone before it opened to the public, so I was thrilled to get on a 100+ year Donald Ross course. The course is fun as you can’t just whack away with a driver and expect success, strategy is at play. The course has a nice feel to it. The greens were rough, but did not dampen the challenge. The staff was outstanding and are making an active effort improving the course.
Had a good laugh at the reviews complaining about the noise from I-80. The course is from 1901, seven years before the Model T and 55 years before the Interstate Act. Can’t have it both ways. Was a thrill to get on an old track where the greats have walked.
New Management Let this Place Go...
I caddied at this course for over ten years and it was a beautiful, small private country club back in the day. I was looking forward to a nostalgic afternoon playing the course that I consider ‘home.’ The staff was unpleasant, the greens were burnt brown and the facilities looked totally neglected. I was very disappointed in how the day turned out. We paid $66 on GolfNow, which I assumed included a cart, only to find out we had to pay $30 for a cart when we arrived. Per person, playing 18 on a Thursday afternoon with a cart was $81. This course is not worth anywhere close to that. Not even on a weekend.

Good Value
You can tell this was a solid private course... bunkers and greens unfortunately are not what they used to be. Still a fun and challenging course with above average fairways and layout.

Great south suburbs course
Great place. Greens in good shape and everything played true. A gem in the south suburbs cant wait to play again

Very bad greens
Burnt out and rough green, won’t play there for the money they are asking thought it was going to be taken care of better that it has. They should be charging under $20 a round

Course has gone way downhill
I had previously played this course when it was private as well as shortly after turning public. I played here in June to see how the course was singing being fully public to consider joining. After seeing the course this time I definitely will not be joining. The greens are completely burnt up and now very slow like a municipal course (the big appeal to me were the lightning fast greens they used to have). The rough was in bad shape with dead 3”+ grass clippings everywhere. Only the fairways and tee boxes seemed to be in ok shape. I understand they were hurting for memberships/covering costs over the last few years but this is not the answer and has completely gone down hill. It was maybe worth 30-40 dollars not the 65 I paid to walk.
Beautiful fairways and tee boxes
Rough and sand traps and greens need attention. Some signs on tee boxes and showing next hole would be helpful. Fairways and tee boxes were excellent. Some nice, long , challenging holes.

One of only two public Donald Ross courses in Illinois
Once a magnificent Donald Ross course, is now just a shade above dog track designation. The greens are dying and have very little grass, The grass next to the green side bunkers had gigantic weeds growing in them. The grounds people are just dumping the grass clipping in the ruff, it looks like they are ready to bale hay. If you pay more than $30,00 w a cart for this course, you are getting ripped.

Course has gone downhill :(
I was extremely disappointed with the quality of this course (especially for 65 dollars midweek pricing). I have played here a number of times over the past couple of years (both when the course was strictly private as well as when it went public) with the last round being in 2018. I played here as a test to consider joining as a year member but after seeing the course I definitely will not be joining. What I used to love about this course is how well maintained it was and how fast the greens were (you had to stay below the hole to stand a chance) as well as you couldn't just hit driver every hole, you had to vary your choice of club selection off the tee. Yesterday's round just left me with disappointment. Greens were extremely slow like a run of the mill public/municipal course, burn marks on the greens everywhere, and long, dead, cut grass everywhere in the first cut of rough (at least around the greens it was cleaned up). I know they club was struggling for a couple of years to get membership which was the driver for closing the pool and then opening to public but it has steadily declined and appears to continue to do so. For 30-40 dollars I would play it but not for 65 (and that's a walking price too).

Classic old layout but needs upkeep
I was excited to play this classic old Donald Ross layout (and drove 50 minutes to get there) that opened for public play last year. Overall it's got some great holes that will test all parts of your game, awesome layout and interesting mix with 5 par 3s and 5 par 5s. In its prime was probably a fantastic course but it just looked really weathered. First off the greens were completely burned out. Literally brown. I was pretty surprised that there was no mention of this as it's not what you're paying for so there should've been a discount. They still rolled ok but definitely on the slower side. Also the rough on the back was like US Open penal so they just need to clean things up. I'd love to come back, and just hope that this course survives because it would be a shame for a 115+ year old course to disappear due to lack of support.

Better options out there
I recently played here and was absolutely shocked to hear from my friend that we each paid $75 for this experience. For one, 80% of the course is lined by the interstate (so close you literally cannot even hold a conversation). Also, may have just been the day, but play was very slow. We didn't even finish the round it was that miserable. This track would be more fairly prices around $30 all-in. I also saw some guy driving his cart on the green.
Take your money to Harborside.
Hello, thanks for the review. We see you rated the course 1-star. We take single star feedback very seriously at our course. We always appreciate the feedback. Please reach out to our team in the golf shop. Thank you for playing Calumet Country Club.
Meh
Not worth $87 + additional cart fees
Weeds in sand traps, not raked... played first thing in the morning.
Grass clippings everywhere.
Better courses around for the money

Great potential BUT
I played this course once before, 42 years ago. I remembered as a very lush, beautiful and well maintained course. This time, the rough was at least 6 inches or more on a number of holes and on the holes where the rough had cut, dead grass was left everywhere. Some holes did not have signage so I was not sure if I was on the correct whole. I paid through Golf Now and it was to include the cart. When i reached the course, I was told the cart was not included. It was definitely worth $67 per person. I need to call Golf Now to ask for a cart refund for 2 players. I'm glad I played it but will most likely be the last time. A friend told it was nice last year, maybe, the Coronavirus shut down hurt the staff in maintaining the course. I hope it gets back to where it should be soon. Otherwise, I don't see the course surviving. It is a shame, it opened in 1901.

Unfortunately, we wont return...
My group was excited to get out and play this course for the first time. Unfortunately due to the knee high rough only yards off the fairways, we will not return. Not only is the layout difficult to begin with, most fairways are about 30 yards wide off the tee, but also the conditions were US open setup. Lost balls hit only a few yards off the fairway resulted in some frustrated golfers. I did enjoy the large greens that rolled true. However its shame the management couldnt get a decent maintenance staff to cut the grass before the first 4somes golf weekend in Illinois. I saw one mower the entire 18.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry to see that your overall experience was anything short of 5 stars, but we hope you'll give us another try in the near future.
Nice course, too loud
This was my first time playing Calumet. It was a former private club so the traps and greens were very nice. It’s a great design with several truly great holes. The rough had not been cut so it was thick and hard to get out of. The overall conditions were not what they could be...and I attribute that to Covid-19. My one main complaint is that it is a very, very loud golf course. Several holes are right on the expressway or close to main roads and the noise was really annoying.

Great lay out.
I love calumet golf course. I was really looking forward to playing today. Pace of play was great . Unfortunately the greens were extremely slow and just not what I expected. Very disappointing.
