Good course BUt...
The staff has been instructed NOT to give out carts until 10 minutes before your tee time, even if there are plenty of carts available. This forces you walk and carry your clubs or walk and take a pull cart to the practice range. For seniors and handicapped players this not a good business model.
The course was in good condition except for the greens. The greens looked like they had been aerated with small punch holes. The greens were also lumpy and littered with all kinds of debris. I asked the pro shop what was going on with the greens and he the staff worker had NO clue.
Southside Gem
Course is holding up well. Very possible to score well here if you are very accurate with approach shots, as the greens are small and well protected with deep, well filled bunkers in many instances. Greens showing a bit of season wear due to unrepaired, or misrepaired ball marks, otherwise a great track
Nice course
We found Ravisloe to be in excellent condition. It is a great layout and has always been a fun course to play. Glad to see it is being maintained so well.
Fun Donald Ross course
First off let me say that I feel I'm a bit of a Donald Ross officianado. I've gotten the chance to play many of his courses over the years and was really looking forward to my round at this course. When we arrived we were told at the pro shop that the credit card system was down due to a truck hitting a utility pole outside the course. He asked if we had cash but when we told him no, he wrote down my credit card information so he could charge it later. The rest of the course however insisted on cash, this was the club house bar and grill and halfway house. Needless to say, this was a pain and an inconvenience.
The course is short but sporty. From the tips you are looking at 6300 plus in yardage. Greens are tiny and well protected like every other Ross course. Only issue with the greens is that they were extremely slow. My guess is the warm weather and the amount of play the course is now getting as a public track.
Our threesome played in less than 4 hours as we were able to go thru a couple groups and found some gaps due to our late afternoon tee time. I would definetly make this a place you shouldt play. It's great for testing your mid irons and sand game.
Lots to like
This was the 6th round at Ravisloe this summer and becoming my go-to course. Love the layout, although the 400 yd par 4s are a little boring. With a little more TLC, things could be better. 1. Get divot repair sand bottles on the carts! I was told that the head of course maint didn't want them because he wants ppl to replace their divot, not fill it in with mix. Sometimes there's no divot left to replace; and if ppl care enough to fill it in with mix, they'll also replace the divot it they can. 2. Clean up the tee boxes! 3. Cut the greens a little closer to get the effect Donald Ross intended. Very frustrating to read a break only to see a straight putt.
Fun course. Great practice facilities.
First off, I love the wedge area. Aside from Harborside, there aren't any courses that I've seen in the area that allow you to take wedges out to 80 yards on a practice green. Great course layout. If the course was a little longer and closer to the city, I'd be there every weekend. Nothing to be done there though. I love the bunkering and the old classy feel to the place. Really cool experience for people used to the standard rec or resort courses.
Hidden gem in Chicagoland.
Ravisloe is truly a hidden gem among public courses in the Chicago area. I started playing there in the summer of 2016 after I got sick of losing so many balls in the fescue at Harborside where I used to play regularly. First, the total yardage of 6300 from the black tees make it accessible for golfers of all abilities. I started as a 30+ handicap then and in my first time playing there I broke 100! Second, the reason why I think I broke 100 is that the greens are in amazing shape and they are maintained like those at private clubs. Third, the course is maintained really well by a diligent grounds keeping staff. They are working on the course daily. Finally, the service from course staff is great. For the price you pay ($75 on weekends and approx $50 on weekdays), you are getting a premium experience. And did I mention it's the only Donald Ross designed course in the Midwest.
always a great round here
Course is in pretty good shape, but the greens have suffered a bit lately with length and unrepaired ball marks. Small greens, some tight fairways make for a bit of a challenge, and overall course conditions are very good. People here are great
What's Up With the Staff?
1st time out at this course and was forced to walk due to wet conditions. Had I known they have limited cart paths I would have not inquired about "cart path only" but the guy working the desk was THE most ignorant person I ever encountered at a golf course. Not only me but dude was ignorant to two people that called, my buddy and the guy before him. I bet Mr. Pleasant was like that to everyone. Another staffer came to chat and said his problem was with GN which has nothing to do with me. If you decide to shoot here be aware when entering the club house. As far as the course goes the track was in great condition and very well maintained, I would definitely go back as long as I don't have to go into the clubhouse.
Donald Ross Gem in Chicago's South Suburbs
Ravisloe was a private club now open to the public and operated by Billy Casper Golf. Considerable effort, apparently, has been put into sprucing the place up for weddings and similar events. While not pristine, it is very usable and the food is quite good. The course is easily walked and is the best of the three Ross designs in Chicago that I've played. Every single hole involves a challenge [often visual] requiring thought and execution and inflicting penalties [some severe] when execution is lacking. The rough is not difficult and doesn't need to be as the mature trees lining the fairways adequately penalize wayward shots. Start to finish I found it an engrossing experience. Conditioning was excellent and the practice facilities were good. The senior rate with cart on Tuesdays was $41, I believe, and that is an excellent value.
Great course that really does hold up to the strong reviews. Definitely now in my Chicagoland Public Top 10
This golf course is a golfers golf course. What does that mean to me? It means that every hole appeals to the eye and the spirit of one who loves the game of golf and treasures the experience as a whole taking into account all of the elements and Ravisloe CC so beautifully delivers them all. Conditions all around were outstanding given the 30-40 minute rain deluge experienced before we teed off. I don't even need to detail any particular feature of this course because as far as I am concerned everything was just as it should be. It was a pure joy to play and I'll definitely be returning.
After just one round here I'm instantly moving Ravisloe into my personal Top 10 public favorite Chicago area golf courses which currently includes Prairie Landing, Bowes Creek, Harborside International, Heritage Bluffs, Big Run, Cog Hill, Blackstone. Highlands of Elgin, and Cantigny. Very much looking forward to returning to the experience!
Course was amazing!
Wonderful course, easy to get to (right off 294 at Halsted), and well worth the money (100 dollar day including cart and beer). The fairways are in spectacular shape, the greens are challenging, and the bunkers are deep! Has the feel of a championship style course.
Ravisloe
Classic Donald Ross Course, ideal layout for walkers, excellent condition.
Everything you could ask for
There are a dozen Ross courses in IL alone, but Ravisloe is the only public.
