Ruffled Feathers Golf Club
About
Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont is conveniently situated just a half hour outside downtown Chicago. Pete Dye and his son P.B. collaborated to design the course, making it the only Dye design in the Chicago area. A well thought-out strategy will be greatly rewarded on this challenging layout and bad shots made without any thought will be severely punished. This is definitely not a golf course where you can just grip it and rip it. The fairways are fairly straight and forgiving, but most of the approach shots play to tricky elevated greens. There are also strategically placed bunkers framing the greens and water hazards come into play on several holes as well. Ruffled Feathers Golf Club's par 3s have a reputation for being particularly challenging. But depending on how windy it is, the final hole might present the most formidable challenge.

Good Pete dye design
The course was in good shape only complaint was pace of play, had a backup on every hole. We left after nine hole staff was great.
The worst of Pete Dye
All of the criticism of Pete Dye-designed golf courses over the years - too tricked up, contrived, artificial, quality of play sacrificed for the sake of eye candy - seem to be exemplified by this course. Course just felt silly after a while. Some hole routings are goofy, and at times hazardous - cart paths right into or blindly across line of fire, driving (of the golf kind) across active streets with people driving (of the automotive kind), etc. Course conditions were surprisingly bad. It has been an unusually wet summer but even the greens had severe problems - so bad that we actually had to give a putter relief and move his ball because his line of putt was so badly marred by bare patches. Pace of play was terrible - 10 minute wait on just about every tee. All in all, after a while, it didn't feel like I was playing golf at all.
Best Golf Course In SW Chicago Area
This is a first class course. The layout and condition of the course rival the best private country clubs. Play this course! You wont regret it!
Great Experience
Ruffled Feathers has been in excellent condition every time I've played this season. Playing a challenging Pete Dye course is a treat and the staff ensures it is! Place this course on your list of places to play in the Chicago area!
Ruffled Feathers Review
This is one of the premier course in the Southwest Suburbs. It is close to several other course in the area and a little more expensive than most, other than Cog Hill numbers 2 and 4.
The layout is a Pete Dye design, it is almost 6900 yards from the Blue and over 7,000 from the tips.
It has an Island green experience, a very eye appealing layout and will challenge you on lost holes.
Highly recommend this course no matter what skill level.
Slow play
Try to put too many golfers out too close together play really really really slow 5 1/2 hour around on a Friday afternoon
great curse
Staff very friendly, course in great shape ,pace of play was good .Course layout is memorable
Dissapointing this time
I usually visit this course when I can find a deal on the tee times, which I did this day. Greens were in the worst shape I have ever seen at this property - very slow with lots of dead spots. No GPS on the carts and very few sprinkler heads are marked (and no other form of yardage indication), so if you don't bring your own personal GPS device, you're going to spend half the round looking around the fairway for a marked sprinkler head. Also, the lack of drinking water availability was causing me irritation and dehydration, and I didn't see the bar car until the 9th tee in order to purchased overpriced liquids. It's a very well designed golf course with lots of fun holes that get your blood boiling, but if they aren't going to keep up with the amenities of other high end courses, they need to come down on their greens fees so that they are priced more like the low end daily fees/munis in the area.
Great midweek value
Very nice course
Not real long but each hole has a challenge
Greens were a little chopped up from
players not repairing ball marks
Green in poor condition
Played here many times. One of my favorite tracks. Don't know what happened to the greens? Some had disease. All ran really slow. Had recently been aerated...in July? Not sure what was going on but not up to their usual standards. Recommend you give it a few weeks before you give it a try.
What Happened
After playing this course over the years I have to ask “what happened”. Get to the course where they have a bag drop but no one around to take your bags, no one around to get you a cart. The only employees we saw all day was the starter and the cart girl. Pace of play was good, fairways were good but the greens were terrible, slow, bare spots, ball marks and some of the tee boxes were just as chopped up. The sand traps were ok but some traps had 4 rakes some traps had no racks. Not sure who the greens keeper is but it is apparent they are not doing their job. Not worth the money unless you get a deal but be ready to put up with bad greens
Course used to be wayyy better! Do not waste your time here.
Outside the clubhouse there was broken glass and bottles everywhere. I dont think it is the golf pro shops staffs issue but the event manager must be remediated. Unacceptable to have garbage all over the entrance and not cleaned up. I was very disappointed in this course especially for paying $97 for a round of golf. Absolutely ridiculous. In addition, greens were in terrible condition. Patchy and no one fixed the divots. For the price we paid, i would expect to see gps in the cart, course layout maps, yardage markers (at least a 150yd marker). Terrible terrible terrible course. I would never play here again and will pass this review onto others. I felt I way overpaid for quality. On top of it, I brought a client here and was embarassed at how bad it was. I am sure he was not happy about this course and now that could be future business for me that may be lost.
Long time member
I've been playing the course every since I was born - grew up in the neighborhood and my family's been a member the last 20+ years. It's been under different management, but you can tell current management is really trying to turn it into a world class course. Though they've made aesthetic updates to the club house and added a few amenities, they have A TON of work to do. I'm posting this partly because I hope management sees this.
First, the course is in absolutely horrendous condition. I played Cog Hill #3 - which gets just as many outings and play - the other day. This course, which is about half the price of RF, blew RF out of the water in terms of its shape. At RF, the greens are absolutely covered in ball marks. It's like putting on the moon there's so many craters. Moreover, fairways and tee boxes are filled with divots. Not to mention, the tee boxes are extremely uneven in most places. I don't know if this is because of outings and/or cheap twilight rates, but it is clear that the golfers have no respect for the course. Not to mention, in areas where the course can control the conditions, they're still terrible.
The pace of play is also an absolute joke. I haven't played past 720 am in the last month due to this, but previously, a weekend round would be well over 5 hours. I've even had 2 or 3 6-hour rounds! This is absolutely unacceptable.
If you don't have a range finder or a GPS, don't bother showing up. The distance markers are either absent or not accurate. A few years back, they had GPS in the carts, so the put yardage markers from one hole on others and never changed them back. So, holes either have no yardage markers or markers that belong on other holes. Moreover, they got new scorecards that don't have a course layout on it; there's absolutely no way for golfers that are unfamiliar with the course to know the hole lay out.
Not to mention, the course doesn't even have any water fountains or coolers on the course. They used to have them, but got rid of them for some reason.
Despite that, I absolutely love the course - the layout is wonderful and challenging. RF is truly a must play. The staff there is also as nice as could be and the food at the grill is amazing - I frequently order carry out from there. However, they have serious changes to make to the course if they want to charge $100 per round - and it starts with improving conditions.
Poor Greens
I visited Ruffled Feathers for the 1st time in over 10 years. We found the greens to be in below average shape. Some of that is attributed to the lack of ball mark repairs. Each green had numerous unrepaired marks in addition to areas of bare spots which made putting/scoring a huge challenge. Conditions were pretty good for the rest of the course. Bunkers were in great shape with just the right amount of sand/rakes. Pace of play was decent at 4 1/2 hrs for a Sat afternoon. The staff was very friendly, saw rangers on several occasions. Overall it was a decent experience at the hot deal of $40. Given a regular fee of $90, based on the green conditions, I would never pay that to play here. I'd recommend to play, but warn about the greens. Thanks
Great Layout awful greens
I have played here numerous times. The price was great ($40 at 2pm). The layout of this course is very good with some holes where you can spray it combined with some holes that require target golf (especially the back nine). The greens were in horrendous shape and that is putting it mildly. The rest of the course was above average but the greens had not been mowed, they were burned out, and in some cases the greens has big patches of dirt instead of grass. If you plan on having a few beers bring some cash because they charge $6 for a 16oz can.
What happened?
Played Ruffled back in the spring and the course was in great shape for a spring round so I was looking forward to seeing it in prime summer shape. Unfortunately the course yesterday was starting to borderline a dog track. I'm not sure what happened or what is going on but the tee's and fairways were a mess and the greens were some of the worst I've seen in years, shaggy/bumpy and just awfully slow. Ruffled used to be one of the better conditioned courses in the area, it's sad to see what it was yesterday and I hope there was a reason for it and it will be back to what I remember. For now I would save your money and go elsewhere. If there were positives from yesterday, the weather was fantastic and we were paired with a really great couple.
Lovely course but slow play
We waited for the group in front for every shot except for a few occasions. On the third hole we saw the ranger and asked what is slowing it down up ahead, his reasoning to our astonishment was that we were late starting. We could see three groups ahead and they were all waiting as well, plus the fact we watched the group in front tee off on the 1st its hard to understand how he concluded it was us. After speaking with the manager and the starter they apologized and claimed they would get the rangers to address the problem, which seemed to work at some points on the course.
The course itself was very nice and I hope the above complaint is a rarity, there is some fantastic looking holes with a lot of character. However with the amount of waiting we did it was not worth the money so I doubt we'll be going back.
What happened??
Used to be a great course. Now, 5 3/4 hour round. Saw the beverage cart once, no water whatsoever on the course. No GPS. The ranger was the starter. People playing in sleeveless t-shirts. Tees were very shaggy, greens had ant hills coming out of them. Areas around greens on some holes (18) were completely dead. Also 50 geese in the middle of the green on 18 makes it hard to putt. If you dont believe, go give it a shot and find out yourself.
Good Track, Take Better Care of it
This is a very good course. Unfortunately, we played it after an outing earlier in the day, and people do not fix ball marks! With the rain that fell a couple days earlier, it made for sloppy, bumpy greens. Also, holes with a green close to water had goose turds all over them! Also, it took 5 hours to play. There was a marshall asking what was happening up ahead, and he went to visit the culprits, but it never got better.
