5/18/2016 Review
As someone who frequents this course very often every year for the last 3 years, I have to say that i'm not impressed with the overall course management along with the conditions of the course.
I typically golf at Fern Hill most Wednesday mornings along with occassional Thursday and Friday mornings, from 8AM until about 4PM.
On Wednesdays, the ladies have a golf league, which is a great thing for the course and more power to them for getting out and golfing! However, the way that Fern Hill manages the other golfers during this league and many other times is nothing short of unplayable. In the last 3 visits i've had in three weeks, I've paid for 18 holes and only been able to complete 9 from 9:00 AM until 1:30 PM. The amount of golfers on the course is nothing short of jam packed at all times.
If you enjoy cheap prices, use GOLFNOW and get a good deal on golf, but be prepared to be waiting quite a while on each hole for golfers. It isn't the golfers themselves that have a slow pace of play, but it's not uncommon to be at the teebox waiting for a group or two to tee off at every hole.
That being said, the bar and food at this facility is very good and one of the main reasons I continue to return to Fern Hill.
This is a nice flat course
Nice course with a great view. Golf carts aren't cleaned regularly but if you book threw golf now & in the Clinton Twp area you can't beat it.
Poor condition
You get what you pay for. Good for a cheap, quick round. Greens where very slow, all grass long in general.
Fair course
$21 groupon. Great fall day. Course was in great shape. Impressed that all leave were being cleaned up. Looking forward to trying here next summer.
Course closed
i usually enjoy this course but booked tee time on golf now only to show up and find out the course was closed.
Horrible Staff, Needs organzation
Went to Fern Hill with 7 other friends as a last outing before we all went off to college, First of all, I booked the tee time a day in advance, not the best heads up but still enough i believe. I was given the "all clear" for 2 tee times and that nobody would even be booked within 20 minutes each way of our time. Show up to an outing larger than mine getting ready to tee, was told a 40 minute wait would be required for our outing, at a $5 discount. Personally i was reluctant to even pay. When we did tee, during our 8th hole we were told to split up because we were moving to slow, which we couldn't because of beginners in front of us. Course was nice to play, and had a great time, but the staff and pace of play absolutely need attention and organization needs to be put in place. Will not return.
convenient but slow
Need rangers to move along slow play. Beginners bogged things down by playing balls on other fairways. Too many twosomes let out. Asked and received raincheck for the back 9. Will try again since it's very woman friendly with forward tees but will never play in prime time again.
Greens and fairways in good condition
Course was in good condition. Tee boxes could use a little work. Good value for what was paid.
Needs new management
It's a nice course with a few challenging holes which are kept in decent condition. However, the staff had nothing organized according to tee times. Very disorganized.
Don't play during holiday weekend
I booked this tee time on Golf Now which cost me 5.00 upon arrial early the first and second tees were backed up 4 foursomes deep and we were told they were letting walk ons as they come in. We arrived 15 minutes early and we wouldn't have teed off until 30-45 after our scheduled time. This course does this consistently over the last few years I've played there. Not only didn't we play our round and lost our fees we got a tee time at a better course and played 18 in 4 hours. Ask many questions when booking at this course to ensure that you aren't paying for a tee time and don't get caught in a cattle call.
Bang for the buck.
For a short course, she generally plays tougher than u think. Greens in great shape, overall course playing firm and fast. Great staff, for less than $20 a good value.
Beautiful Old Growth Course
Tight in places where ball position in the fairway becomes an interesting challenge.
Coming back
Played here many times before and decided to come here today. Course looked in good shape pave was really good even with a 9:46 am start.
fern hill
it has it's challenges to be sure. not the most difficult, but it can still be frustrating. hang in there.
too slow
they booked us at the end of a group outing, we actually were in between their players and it was slow!!!! we had to play front nine twice.
Not a great experience
Booked on golfnow, paid 20 for 9, not worth it at all to me. Grabbed a hot dog on the way out to the first tee, it was very old. Waited about 25-30 min to tee off on the first hole, would've waited longer but a threesome let us go before them because of our twosome. Course condition was 2.5 out of 5 really wet, although sever wet spots were blocked off. Threesome in front was playing really slow and wouldn't let us play through, so we skipped a hole and saw that the course was severely overbooked. I go golfing about 20-30 times a year and will never go back there like scs
Great Course
I really enjoyed this course; only one incident with an outing behind us that picked up one of our balls, in their defense they didn't know, (although you could clearly see us driving towards that particular ball). Surprisingly no sand traps!
Good Practice Course
This is a decent course for the money. I would not pay more than $25. Very slow play. There was a foursome in front of three groups that held us all up the entire front nine. Finally on the back, they started letting groups play through. It would have helped to have a ranger on duty. The tee boxes are not in very good shape. Difficult to find a flat area with grass, and they were covered with dirt and sand. Since there are no real cart paths, there was barely any grass on the sides of some of the greens. The fairways and rough were in good shape. The greens needed cutting...they were super slow. On one hole, there was a gentleman playing with no shirt. On another hole, there was a foursome playing bumper cars with the carts and driving on the fringe....these were grown "men". The course itself provided enough challenges to provide an interesting round of golf.
Great Course
had an excellent time on the course would recommend it to anybody
nice course
nice course, difficulty level is easy. no bunkers or any real challenges but well taken care of and staff is friendly however, the golf carts need maintenance
