15th green, one of the few that wasn’t all patchy on the edges and gives you a nice scenery of those pine trees. Photo submitted by BuffaloBen15 on 10/26/2020
Great Value
First time at course, mid April, greens were impressive but on the slow side would have been perfect if they were cut short. Course is on the easy side, no traps pretty much wide open. One note to people with control issues, some of the tee boxes are really close to the greens, heard a lot of "Fours"
Didn't go in clubhouse/ Grill but looked really nice.
End of Season Issues
Fern Hill is a nice golf course overall. Slow group in front of us really halted play, but this could have happened anywhere. There are a few dog legs, very reachable par 4s, pretty short par 3s, and virtually no sand traps.
My partner and I had a very hard time finding the ladies tees though. Most of the time they were covered in leaves, which is seasonal, but there were at least 3 holes where the ladies tees were impossible to find. Since the ladies tees were so far ahead of the others it made sense to just tee off at the beginning of the fairway.
Most of the tee boxes on the front 9 were very chewed up and dirt covered. Had a tough time finding some good patches of grass. For the price and the time of the season it was still very fun.
drivable par 4s
I had fun time time because the course was empty, there were no bunkers and very little water. The course is short but does bend around and have a few rivers to carry. The greens were in pretty good shape but some of the T boxes were in poor shape. I would go back and play but would look for a better deal. I paid $23 plus fees, and this is too much for this course.
Bring 2 pairs of shoes
Booked through Golfnow.com for a Sunday morning price of $28.00. Paid the $4.98 booking fee online. Got the course and was told the fee was $30.00. My credit card was actually charged $34.50. Total cost came to $39.48. The course was worth playing at $28.00 but not $39.48.
Played at 8:00 AM. I expected the grass to have dew on it. But, it had not rained for a few days and I did not expect much more than that. I had read other reviews about the ground being wet because the course sits fairly low and has creeks running through it. My shoes were soaked after 9 holes. It would have been nice to have had a spare pair to switch to. I could see water being kicked up on practice shots. I had to clean water and mud off of every club after use---even the putter.
The fairways and greens were generally in good condition. Due to the wet ground, every ball picked up a decent amount of mud if hit in the rough. I had to have a towel with me on every green to clean my ball before putting. I really did not have an issue with the play-ability of the course.
The cart paths were awful. They were composed of gravel in some areas and dirt in others. The gravel was in serious need of repair and left many holes and uneven spots.
Ultimately, I would play here again. However, I would call the course and make a tee time to save the $5.00 booking fee and to lock in a known price before going. I would also consider a later tee time to see if the ground was not as wet in the afternoon.
Staff adds to experience
Front lets you miss hit and still score. The back 9 requires a little more discipline. The crews out there sure do seem to work hard and the staff inside, both clubhouse and bar/restaurant are very friendly.
Friendly course n stuff.
It's a nice n easy to play golf course, great value n a nice restaurant n bar to relax after a round, only drawback is that the back nine floods even with little rain.
Great course
Peaceful, clean and soft greens. Only issue is the course is a little wet due to it being so low to the water level.
Nice course, would play again
The course was in better than average shape. For the price paid with golf now it was a great deal. Friendly staff,
Tee boxes a little hard at times but the greens were in very good shape. The only issue we had was there not being a ranger and how 2 new golfers can back up an entire course. Not that I'm against new golfers but some standard etiquette may have helped. Will play there again
Beautiful course
It had rained all night so I didn't have high hopes, but the course was in excellent shape. The greens were tough but fair, I was pleasantly surprised.
interesting
paid $15 to play 18 holes, so there's nothing to complain about.
fairly tight course where the dogleg holes require good shot selection. good selection of interesting holes that have great greens.
make sure rain is not in the forecast as this place will flood quickly.
will play again
Fern Hill - great not-so-crowded place to get in a good round
I like the fact that carts are mandatory. It helps the pace. Since it's not very crowded during the week I have never had a problem with a game I can play at my own pace... Which I LOVE. Not sure what it's like on the weekend. The Cottonwood "snow" on the front nine made it hard to find my ball in plain site a few times though. Not sure what they can do about that other than more judicious high mowing to collect it. Second time playing and I enjoyed it even more than the first. The patio that appears to be recently built is an awesome place to relax after you're done or even take your lunch from Fludz (their restaurant) to eat and watch the other players. What they do need is water stations on the course and maybe get their beverage cart out earlier in the day. If you don't bring a beverage with you before 3pm you are going to regret it.
Challenging
Staff very friendly, the bar did a excellent job getting us cold beer, course is challenging and in good shape!
This course has the best greens
Great course for the money, greens are some of the best in the area. I will be back to play many times
goof course for beginners.
It was a beautiful day and the course was in good shape.
Good bang for your buck.
Lot long at all although my wife enjoyed the advantage. We will be back . excellent for couples.
Great course to enjoy with your lady
There is a lot of water to give you trouble. The next time I play I will be much more aware and layup when necessary. I did enjoy the course and will play again
Great course
I played this course about 5 yrs ago and it was average,I can not believe the change in the course now. This course is well manicured and well taking care of.There are some challenging holes that makes this course really good.Green are in great shape, fairways are great and the ruff is well maintained. it makes me feel like I'm up north playing.
Mistake
When we first arrived there they had a large group of about 24 sitting around. They had apparently already made the turn and were waiting to go on to the back. However when we teed off they were betting on the practice putting greens. After playing 10 holes we arrived at the 11th to find the group just teeing off. In the hour and a half we spent playing the front the golf staff let them just go out whenever they wanted. If we would have stayed it would have taken six hours to play the back 9. We decided to leave and they gave us a rain check for 9 but it just was frustrating. I had a guest from out of town who I never see and we had to cut the day short because of this. We would have been fully satisfied with this course if this wouldn't have happened.
The billing issue was resolved. Paid $30.00 total for the round.
