The West at Forest Akers Golf Course
About
The West Course at Forest Akers is one of two 18-hole courses owned and operated by Michigan State University in East Lansing. The West is the premier tournament layout for the Spartan golf teams and also hosted the Division III Women’s National Golf Championship in 2021. The rolling and forested layout was originally designed by Bruce Matthews but was extensively renovated in the 1990s by Arthur Hills and received further updates in 2010. In the early 2000s, a new clubhouse and hotel was built on property that altered the routing of the golf course. There is also an extensive practice facility across the street at the East course and accessible to the public. The West Course is considered one of the Midwest’s finest, public-access campus courses and one of the best layouts in the Lansing area.

Things move slow at forest acres ....
This is a fun course but you can forget about being done in 4.5 hours. Pretty much everyone moves in slow motion and unless your the first tee time, your going to be stuck behind some shameless group of 6+hour per round players. Also if your a big hitter then chances are very good your going to put one on an adjacent tee box, which is fine if theres a slow group standing on it ....
Great course, great price
Underratted course, that gets over shadowed by the overly tricky West course. The east is just pure straightforward golf, that real players prefer.
Thanks for the 5-star review glenk69! Glad you found your favorite between the two. Go Green!
Soggy weather
Unfortunately, we played the course after two solid days of rain. Because of this, the greens were shaggy and beyond slow. Would like to play the course in better weather conditions.
Thanks for the 4-star review jeffweny! We'd love to have you back out on a dry day.
Let us know before hand and we'll turn off the rain. ;) Go Green!
Beautiful
This is a very nice course. It was very wet but still played well. Can't wait to play again when it's dryer.
Thanks for the 4-star review u596513481! Glad you enjoyed your wet round. Let us know next time you prefer dry and we'll turn off the rain. ;) Go Green!
Great Golf Course!!!
If you like to challenge your skills this is the course to play. Lots of trees fairways are very nice. Sunday they just rolled all the greens.
Msu golf
Outstanding design and conditions at MSU Forest Akers West...always a treat for over 45 years now! I'm growing older it just gets better...ha
A favorite and fantastic value
Although not a 5 star course (like an Arcadia or Forest Dunes), Akers is definitely just one notch down from a design and condition standpoint. And from a value POV, I believe it's the best value by far anywhere in Michigan. Does not get the crushing amount of play that would bog down rounds and is half of what you'd play at similar tracks.
Early Morning Round
Played an early morning round. Went off the back nine because of a shotgun on the front. Played in under 3 hours by myself. Course is in great shape. Love the layout because has a mix of straightforward holes and some very challenging ones. Doesn't let you hit driver off each tee. Can play very long from the tips.
solid course
This is my go to course when I invite people to play. I know that the course is going to be in great shape and the price is always very reasonable. Staff is always very helpful and the Spartan Academy pros are awesome. Practice areas and driving range are top notch. The only thing that this course needs is a place to sit down after the round and have some food and a beer.
Nice Track
nicely maintained. pace of play was slower. needs to have more coordination with cart girls and Snack bar. should be able to order lunch to be delivered on course.
Great course for the price
Played the west corse in high school for state finals and it has gotten better sense then. Great course for the $30 I paid.
A job well done
Course was in great condition and the staff was extremely courteous. Would have liked the option to purchase alcohol at the club house and not wait for the beer cart. The pace was great on the front 9 but got bunched up on the back 9. I was pleasantly suprised by the layout. Did not have a feel of a Lansing golf course. The price was great and I will be coming back. I suggest checking this course out especially if you play a lot at the East Course.
Great Course - Speedy Greens
The course was in great shape! I have never played greens that rolled so true. It was like being at Augusta.
I was going to get to play Augusta but im cancelling the trip and going to play Akers instead. Thanks for the tip!
Great course
Course was in fabulous condition for being this early in the year. Staff was very helpful and accomodating.
Mess
This course is as beat up as any course I've ever played in my life. While the course itself isn't in terrible shape as far as the greens and fairways, the construction around the course makes the overall experience unappealing. To add insult to injury, the rates far exceed the quality of course included a student rate which changed prices by 1 dollar. Overall, this course is a bottom tier golf course, I wouldn't suggest playing here unless you can go for around $8 with a car for 9.
We wanted to apologize for the condition of the course. The course has been impacted by a major on campus project with power lines for the FRIB being run underneath the East Course. We understand your frustration and would like to have you back as our guest when the project is complete. Please email us at golfinfo@rhs.msu.edu with your name and contact information, and we will get that arranged.
Course was in great shape, greens fast and true
Staff was friendly and professional. They have a good system in place in keeping pace of play moving along. The greens were fast, but true. Would play again!
Put it on your list!!!
You need to put the west course on your list of must plays!!! Excellent facilities, fantastic staff and support team and one of the nicest courses I have ever played!! The course was very busy but we still played it in under 4 hrs!!! The college students that work at the course were very friendly and knowledgeable. I will definitely make the 3 hr drive from Lima, Ohio to play this course again!!!
This course is getting better
Course is getting some face lifts (cart paths, new tee boxes) If your a beginner not advisable tall rough must stay in fairways. For some reason it was very slow play and we had to call for a beverage cart. I can see why MSU golf team plays there and hosts tournaments it can be very difficult and long from the tips.
Great course, great conditions, play was slow.
The course, staff, and facilities are fantastic. We joked with the clubhouse attendant that they carry ball markers from the entire Big 10. He laughed and said even the Michigan ball markers fly off the shelves.
The course conditions were impeccable. The greens rolled true. The course is very fair and will reward longer hitters with some shorter par 5s reachable in 2. However, the course makes up for the shorter par 5s with some 180-200 par 3s from the green tees. The length from the green tees was 6400. There are mature trees that will cost you a stroke if you happen to spray the ball too far in either direction. The greens are typical Aurthur Hills design. They look deceivingly flat, but the slight contours keep you guessing and wondering how a straight putt can break that far.
The only downside was the pace of play. We were paired up with a two-some that played the green tees- should have been on the white and red for one of the guys. When it takes 2 shots to get to the red tees, you are playing too far back! The kicker was, we were being held up by the group in front of us and the group in front of them. The college kids, as uncomfortable as it may be, will have to enforce slow play to be a top notch course. The kicker is, there is a great course across the street that would be fantastic for the golfer who struggles a little with towardness. It took us 5 1/4 hours to play and we putted out and had to make our goodbyes extremely short to the new people we met.
Thank you for all the positive feedback. We strive to have a much better pace of play then you experienced. If you contact us at golfinfo@rhs.msu.edu, we would be glad to send you guest passes to visit us again.
Thanks for the 3-star review AmotoXracer! We are constantly working on pace of play so thanks for the encouragement to keep working at it. Go Green!
