The West at Forest Akers Golf Course
About
The West Course at Forest Akers is one of two 18-hole courses owned and operated by Michigan State University in East Lansing. The West is the premier tournament layout for the Spartan golf teams and also hosted the Division III Women’s National Golf Championship in 2021. The rolling and forested layout was originally designed by Bruce Matthews but was extensively renovated in the 1990s by Arthur Hills and received further updates in 2010. In the early 2000s, a new clubhouse and hotel was built on property that altered the routing of the golf course. There is also an extensive practice facility across the street at the East course and accessible to the public. The West Course is considered one of the Midwest’s finest, public-access campus courses and one of the best layouts in the Lansing area.

Nice Course
First time playing the course. I was impressed by the course. Greens are fantastic, along with the fairways. There are tons of trees, but they really don't come into play.
Saturday gol
Found a great special online and decided to give Forest Acres West a try. I played this course once before but it had been 10 years. The course was in great shape and the price was very fair but had 2 problems... my round took 5 hours because of the group in front of us. The ranger came by and provided no assistance... Also we didn't see a cart girl until the 9th hole... I would still play this course again just wish to see the cart girl more and faster pace of play. Course was in great condition!
great shape
Fun fun, hard course for some of the not so good golfers. Had 8 guys and everybody loved in.Beer girl could have came around more since it was in the 90's, but overall great experience.
back to school
great course with a "muni" feel, usually busy in the prime season, the greens are very good and since msu takes care of the grasses on the course, well, they know what they are doing, because it has an agricultural school we did call for a ranger for some slow players in front of us, but never got one and eventually did get to play through
Akers West
Course condition was good but the greens were a little slower than normal
Great value and a challenging layout
Great value and the course conditions were also top notch. Staff was awesome and everything was reasonably priced. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.
Nice course
Very well maintained all around. I really enjoyed it. I've golfed the east a few times but this was my first on the west. The only thing I would like to see is a bit more "next hole" indicators. Easy to head the wrong way in there and not know it.
Tough greens
Course was very well maintained on all three areas; greens, fairways and roughs. Greens rolled fast and great. Had a lot of wicked breaks in them. Missed 2 putts inside 2 feet. Front 9 seems to play easier then the back. The east course does not sell beer which was a bummer but understandable with it being the university course.
Play the course from the middle tees. Whites are not as challanging and the rear tees are real tough
Couldn't find a good time by calling the course. went on Golfnow.com and found the perfect time I was looking for. Joining Golfnow was the best golfing decision I have made in years.
Awesome Golf Course
Overall awesome course! Great design, it's in great shape, and is fun to play.
Greens were very slow
This course is always a pleasure to play but found the greens to be very slow and a lot of cut grass on the fairways. I was told because of the tough winter they are not doing much with the greens until they get some growth( there was only one green that had brown from standing water and one green that was temporary.
Tough course. Great shape. Slow pace of play.
Forest Akers West is a great course - much nicer than East. The only problem that occurred was the pace of play. I booked a twosome online and we were paired with another two. This is a bit annoying, and it appeared they did this a lot because the entire course was packed. The round took a long time and it seemed like they could have booked a couple fewer tee times to help the pace of play. Overall, this course is worth playing.
Perfect course to play with friends
Fantastic course and very nice staff really made me feel good. I really recommand this golf club to play if you have a chance.
West is Worst - East is Excellent
Wow has this course gone down hill. 17th green was so burned up it was like putting on pavement. Other greens had problems too. The East course is now the better of the two.
Survived the bad winter and ice storms
Course overall was in good condition given the winter and storms we had. A few of the greens had massive dead loss, but overall I thought it was in good condition for the time.
Great course, better value
We make an annual pilgrimage to Forest Akers every fall and it never disappoints. Great layout, great condition and a friendly staff.
tight fairways fast greens
this course is a must play if you live in tis area. msu has the best grass fairways and greens , bring your game from your homecourse and you will love the challenge
Great layout
Wonderful golf course. Fairly wide open. Well trapped. Beautiful pro shop.
Very nice course. Looks like a high end country club
First time playing the course. Got a great deal on it.
BIG TEN course----GREAT!
The course was in great shape. Can,t wait to play it again!
