Average course in a nice setting

Greens were in good shape, tees need attention. It is an average course that could be better with maintenance. Decent for the price. A good course for women, rating of 117 from the reds. We played in Oct. 2013, next week the fall colors will be in full color.

All the courses in Western NC have suffered massive rainfall this summer.

Black Mountain is in relatively good shape even with many wet spots in fairways and the staff made sure we were welcomed. The par 6 seventeenth hole makes the trip worthwhile, just to say you played it. Donald Ross design always makes for a challenging round under any conditions.

My first NC golf.

The terrain was a bit too much for me to walk, but many locals did. The layout is classic, very few sand bunkers, a creek or two to navigate, the bent grass greens priceless...wonderful, a pleasure to behold from this S.Florida golfer.

Challenging Layout

It's hard to judge this course critically because of all the bad weather we've been having in the NC mountains this year. The course was extremely wet, and conditions suffered. The greens and elevated fairways are well maintained, but the holes in low lying terrain are nearly unplayable. I'm sure if we can get a break from the heavy rains, this course would live up to its Donald Ross heritage, and be an enjoyable challenge. Staff is friendly.

Nice public course to play

With all the rain in that area course was in great shape, staff was super. Next time I am in the area I will play it again, hope that it's not as wet.

Nice course with a long hole!

The course is a mixture of some long holes (225 yard par 3; 700+ Par 6!) and short ones, two par 3's that play less then 100 yards, several 300-325 par fours. Pace of play is easy to keep going as fairways/primary rough are wide for the most part with very little OB. Greens ran true both times played, fairways were maintained well. Over all this course is a nice place to play (especially w/hot deal) although a bit far for me. If you are within 30 minutes though, you should play it and not simply for the gimmick of a par 6, this course is much more then 1 hole.

Slow Play

Very slow play, probably not course's fault. Cart path only, several foursomes of Seniors in front of us and took forever to walk from cart to ball, hit less that 100 yards, walk back to cart, pull up a little bit, walk back to ball. You get the idea. Certainly dampened our enthusiasm for playing this course again.

although this course is fun and well maintained there are a couple of things to look out for.

The course has a couple of holes that are squeezed together, which causes you to wait for players on nearby holes. The 17th is too long. This course could have been a beautiful par 72, but instead there is an unnecessarily long par 6! Very friendly staff and we would still go back, besides the par 6!

Nice Intersting Course. Excellent Value.

We recently played this course while staying in Asheville. The course is only a 20 min drive from Asheville. The guy in the pro shop was very friendly and gave us all the info on the course. Although it was a cold day, there we lots of locals out playing. Surprisingly, lots of them were walking, as it is a very hilly course. We had a cart included in our green fee, so went with a cart (good decision). The course has lots of streams throughout and lots of elevation changes. There was a choice of 4 different t-boxes. Each hole had a diagram to show you the holes info. The greens were in excellent shape and very interesting. Hole 17 is a long Par 6 and hole 18 is played across a road. I found the course very interesting and we really enjoyed our round. I would highly recommend this course when you are in the area. For $20 with a new cart, it is an excellent value.

Great mountain views with a few great holes

This course is fun to play. The 700+ yard Par 6 is worth the trip alone. Not fantastic conditions by any means but a nice little mountain course.
