Had a good time.
Me and 3 friends played this course for the 1st time and it was great. You have to be able to be accurate off the tee especially on the back in order to reach some pretty tight fairways. Over all loved the course.
Terrible maintenance and management
This course is the epitome of a dirt track - the fairways had large chunks removed from them as if someone had a backhoe for an eight iron; the tee boxes had more sand than grass; and, even though I repaired a multitude of ball marks on each green, they still resembled the back side of braille paper. But what sent me beyond the point of displeasure was the course management. They were rude, disrespectful, and arrogant.
Do yourself the favor, don't play golf here.
Fabulous greens
Whenever I am in the Asheville area I try and get in one round at Black Mountain, as it's one of the most affordable public golf courses in the area. I walked on around 3:00 pm on a Wednesday and it was $20 to walk. You can't beat that deal.
Key things you need to know. This course is very walkable, so cart isn't really needed. It's a classic Donald Ross design that has been around long before golf carts. In fact, you'd be better off walking, as there are quite a few fairways that are always too wet to drive on, as this course does not drain well. No matter how dry it's been lately you'll have standing water in certain fairways, and patches of mud here or there. But when I played yesterday the greens were the best I have ever seen them. Comparable to some high end courses in the area. So regardless of your lie in the fairway, you will be putting on great greens.
Me and another guy walked this in 3 hours, as we weren't held up much on the front nine, and we had the back nine to ourselves. The challenge at this course is always the 17th hole, to see if you can reach it in 3 shots. Easier said than done.
Worth it one time
Decent shape municipal. Greens are mostly great but fairways are lacking in many spots. Every shot is side hill lie. What makes this course worth playing are the mountain views. It's worth it once, but not twice.
WARNING: OVER-BOOKED
This golf course has gone from phenomenal to pitiful in the course of two short years. The staff is clearly not putting much money or effort into the condition of the course anymore. Tee boxes are mostly bare, fairways are consistently 2+ inches tall, and the greens are mediocre at best. Do NOT play this course within a month of aeration as it always takes forever for the greens to recover. The course is also significantly over-booked during the golfing season. Be prepared for 6+ hour rounds if you play any time before 3PM. Advanced players should definitely avoid this course.
Fun course
I always enjoy playing this course.
The pro is a super nice guy, and I've yet to be paired with
someone who wasn't an awesome person!
They keep the course in good shape, and seldom are cart path only.
I think you would enjoy this one.
Btw, the par 6 is a birdie hole!
OK course for the price
We played this course based on the good reviews and the proximity to Asheville. For the price, I can't complain too much but would not play this course again. The greens were in great shape and had a moderate amount of difficulty. The tee boxes were in mostly terrible shape and the fairways average. It was a mix around the greens, you could easily be trying to chip from dirt or crab grass, rarely was there a good lie close to the green. We played a Thursday morning and there were a lot of walkers on the course ahead of us, pace of play was described as 4 hours for 18 but it took us 5 1/2.
Fun Course
Main complaint was the way overbooked tee times, as they placed them 7 minutes apart on a holiday, which caused MAJOR waiting between shots almost the entire round. Fun course, though. Has it's challenging holes, but very playable for all skill levels.
Great views and a great course
This is a great course if you are in this area with great views. Some of the greens were damaged but overall it's a great course with challenging holes and the famous 747 yard 17th hole. I will be back to play here
Love this course
Great course and friendly staff. I like playing this course each week if I can continue to get special deals from GolfNow!
Very nice course
I played this course about 35 years ago and still remembered the par 6. Was in town for other reasons and booked a time to play with my dad who is in his 80's. We were early for a 9:50 tee time and the starter sent us out on the back since it was open. Thus we were able to play at a great pace. Course is fairly straightforward but in a nice way. Holes offer a decent challenge with a few narrow fairways. Fairways and greens were in good condition. It's a little hilly but not nearly as bad as many courses in the mountains. Wasn't too wet despite tons of rain in recent days. My only issue is that they don't have a driving range to warm up on, so it was a little rough going on the first tee. I will definitely play it again, though.
Fun course. Way to slow.
The course is very fun layout and greens were in great shape. Only complaint is way overbooked and with way to many 4somes walking. I don't mind waiting but it was extremely long wait on every shot.
Mountain course
First time play...A good test of my golf skills. Club selection is very important! Since this was my first time to play this course I didn't know which club to use. Up/down the whole time. It really tested my ability. Very pretty vistas set in beautiful surroundings..creeks, ponds, blind shots to green, but the up/ down factor was the most difficult to gauge. It was very hot the day I played so the back 9 was more of a challenge for me, because I was tired. You'll enjoy playing this course...go ahead book your reservation now!
Great day of golf.
Our day at Black Mtn. was fantastic. Golf coarse is in good shape and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The staff was fantastic!!! The greens were very good.
Fun Day
Greens and fairways are in good shape, esp. for a muni.
Good value for the price of the green fees.
Black Mountain GC is a typical mountain coarse with uneven lies and elevation changes. The grass was in good shape. Overall a decent public coarse.
A Good Variety of holes & good greens
Black Mountain has that neighborhood feel to it. Good local golf at an affordable price. Course offers a variety of holes, but no severe hills to navigate up or down. The mountains surround you, & the consistent fairways & good greens, make for an enjoyable round. Course is usually available for a modest fee, which is more than fair. I'll be back. it's a good test.
Fun course, good condition, great time!
Had a great time playing Black Mountain. Really didn't know what to expect, but the greens were in great shape and the course is quirky and fun. It's fairly easy as far as mountain courses go. I had never seen it before and shot a stress-free 79 as a 10 handicap. It has a couple of strange holes -- the par 6 17th and #18 where you hit your approach over a road leading back to the clubhouse. It added to my enjoyment, actually, it was entertaining and all-around a good time. Greens were difficult to read for me, but not my playing partner.
Recommended for a fun day of good views and interesting holes.
Fun Day Golfing
Played at Black Mountain for the second day in a row. The course was in great shape but is beginning to get dry, not much rain lately. Greens held very well but are kinda slow so they don't break as much as one might expect. Wife and I paired up with a young couple, had a lot of fun. Turns out the young man was from my home town. Great day golfing - but then - any day golfing is a great day.
