Golfer Reviews
Somewhat worth the money
It's not really the best kept course but it's also not priced to be that. It could be an amazing course if they would keep up with it, but they really don't. I enjoy playing it if I don't really have anywhere else to go and I want to save some money. The greens are hit or miss, you could get one hole where it is about perfect and one hole where it's mostly sand. Tee boxes are not good at all and some fairway's lack grass completely (in parts).
Sadly, horrible conditions have ruined this course
I golfed at Westport last week, and was extremely disappointed. Having played the course numerous times over the past three decades, I have seen it go from its plush conditions of its inception, to disrepair, to overall improvement under Stan Overton's direction, to various shades of further disrepair. The conditions of the course have never been worse. Greens were bad, tee boxes were worse, fairways were lacking a major ingredient -- grass. Sadly, this course is ruined, and it will take a monumental effort to recover. I pity the folks who have homes on this golf course, as there are no positive elements to enhance their home values. Won't be playing this course again unless and until huge improvements are made.
Priorities
Had to play the back nine twice because of green aeration. No notice on the app that this was scheduled. Recent storm had an excessive amount of downed trees and debris. Not the courses fault, but could have prioritized clean up before green aeration. Tee boxes trash looked like it hadn’t been emptied for a week
Needs some love
Well you can’t have it all. Westport is appropriately priced for its situation. This course just needs some love as the layout is still challenging.
Worst experience I’ve had
The staff in the clubhouse was the rudest I’ve ever experienced. Showed up for my tee time and asked for an extra cart. Was told it would cost 50 dollars. The guy at the register said he didn’t care what the price online was that was “his rule” riders pay full price. Drove an hour to play here and was told to leave because I asked for another cart and even when I said the rider would just ride in the cart with us was told I had to pay 50 extra dollars and cussed out. Never been treated like this at a course and I was as polite as I could be. I don’t know how the man running the register has gotten through life to this point because he was the most disrespectful person I’ve met. DO NOT GO TO THIS COURSE!! Worst experience ever and I’ve probably played 100 golf courses in north and south Carolina
Poorly Managed
This was once a beautiful golf course however it seems over the last several years, course maintenance has just been severely lacking. The fairways are littered with dirt patches and weeds. The greens are rock solid and covered in sand as well as areas of the green are bare with no grass almost like mini bunkers on the green. The other golfers on the course seemed to have no respect for the course which didn't help, AKA driving right up on to the tee boxes, and directly down the fairway right up to the greens.
Tough Course w/ Decent Value for Beginners
The course isn’t beautiful, (Tee boxes and fairways need a good deal of work) but the greens are well kept and relatively fast.
Very interesting holes….lots of doglegs. Provided a good challenge and great entertainment for a beginning golfer such as myself.
No driving range, putting green needs work, hotdogs at the turn were excellent.
Better courses for the money
Course needs a ton of work. Fairways don’t exsist. Greens are horrible. Tee boxes are basically grass areas of dirt. Was told the owner stopped investing into course and started investing into building houses. I guess owner doesn’t realize owners houses would like a nice course to play in a great area. Sad to see how much potential course has. Hard layout but overall fun to play if it were in better condition.
Bring a Draw
Play with someone who knows the course just so you don’t lose 3-4 balls on blind tee shots or unexpected bounces (I really wish I had - the yardage book is only somewhat helpful). If you can’t play a draw, you’re out of luck as a large percentage of holes either require or reward that shot shape off the tee.
Majority of holes have significant elevation changes which is different than most courses in the Charlotte area - if you don’t enjoy that style of golf go somewhere else. I switched tee boxes on a couple of par 3’s just to hit more clubs in my bag.
Grass quality is hit or miss - most lies are fine, but it does affect the smoothness of the roll on several greens. Overall still pretty playable.
This is a course for those who enjoy golf and don’t mind some rough edges. I’d play again if I knew I’d be paired with a regular, but will not be frequenting the course.
Westport
The golf course conditions were very poor, perhaps from season change perhaps from understaffing but fairways and rough un mowed and greens in bad need of mowing. A lot of bare ground in playing areas. Cart paths in bad shape. Better value around the area for similar price
Great Location, Laid Back atmosphere
Westport is my neighborhood course. It is very playable. The greens need a little TLC but it’s not unfair. I expect it will green up pretty nicely as the Bermuda takes off in the summer. Worth the money and the pace of play is as good as anywhere.
