TPC Harding Park ranks among the most famous municipal courses in the country, along with Torrey Pines South and Bethpage Black. TPC Harding Park, which is part of the San Franciso Recreation and Parks Department, hugs the shores of Lake Merced in close proximity to the Lake Merced Golf Club, The Olympic Club and San Francisco Golf Club. Dating to 1925, it has a long history of tournament golf among its stately Monterey Cypress trees. Byron Nelson won back-to-back San Francisco Opens in 1944-45. The PGA Tour's Lucky International in the 1960s attracted winners such as Gary Player (1961), Gene Littler (1962), Jackie Burke Jr. (1963), Ken Venturi (1966) and Billy Casper (1968).

After falling on hard times, the course received a $16-million renovation in 2002-03 that brought it back into the tournament fold, hosting the 2005 World Golf Championship-American Express Championship, the 2015 WGC-Match Play Championship, The Presidents Cup in 2009, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship from 2010-12 and the 2020 PGA Championship, its first major.

Great course…a gem to play

The course was in great condition given that carts arent allowed on the fairways. It’s a good walking course with phenomenal weather. Greens ran smooth and true. Rough although 2-5” was penalizing so you have to keep it in the fairways. Bunkers were well maintained..:overall I really enjoyed the round.

TPC Hardly

Non-resident review. Standard pace 4.5 hours. Course overall is overrated in my opinion, feels like a basic snake like layout front 9. No real breathtaking views or much elevation and a couple of doglegs. There is Lake Merced on back 9 but not very picturesque looks like green water tbh. Good greens though ball rolls nice! Much better courses in the nearby Bay Area like Half Moon Bay or Presidio for a much better value and layout. The NR price is high for a very basic track but I guess because the PGA Champ, PGA and LPGA past events they hang their hat on that being a muni major host. They also charge $25 per cart fee not included in GolfNow price and it’s freaking cart path only. Do your self a favor and rent a push cart or walk, it’s a very walkable course. The spectator fee is $25 per person and they cannot walk the course either so you’re forced to pay $25 spectator fee and cart fee a whopping total $50 wife fee lol. The food was ok but not great I paid $25 for a turkey melt and fries. No drink cart was present, but I did play on a Monday 11a-3:30p. It’s a one and done course for me. IG: Manos_Arriba happy to answer any Q’s.

Course conditions getting Better

Course seems to be getting better in shape.

Only thing lacking it being in its best cont is the greens.

It seems like players are lacking in repairing green properly, causing the greens being a bit lacking in being the best they can be.

Must play

Great course especially this time of year! Had some unexpected rain the previous night so greens were a bit slower than expected but always true. Can’t wait to go back, if visiting SF for golf this is definitely where you want to play. My only take away is it’s cart path only year round. This policy does make for well kept lush fairways however does have a tendency to slow down the pace. Definitely recommend renting a push cart or carrying so you are not the group that has to run back and forth across every fairway for each shot.

Great Course

Course is in great condition after aeration and maintenance. Still challenging as always with its narrow fairway and thick rough. Green pace was just perfect, around 9-10 stemmeter. Pace of play was just a little over 4 hours.

Iconic course but wish the greens hadn’t been aerated

The course is beautiful and iconic. They had punched the greens a week or so ago so the greens were in pretty bad shape. We played a foursome in about 3:40 min so the pace of play was great. I’d definitely play it again but I’d wait until the greens are normal.

Bad range

The range says to use their rubber tees only and you cant put a tee in the mat. But all the rubber tees were broken. So you cant practice driver before playing a 6400 yard course (from the whites). Overpriced, greens were bad too

Just Visiting

Had the day off so found an open spot to play TPC. Staff was very helpful getting set up with rental clubs and a cart. Initially was paired with one other and we got stuck behind a walking foursome that had zero consideration for pacing. Some let the twosome behind us merge in with us and that helped slow things down. Best part about this track is that it’s very difficult to lose a ball.

Horrible conditions!

Very disappointed not knowing the course was under maintenance aerification. Started on the back nine and tee boxes are sandy and wet from the morning weather moisture. The greens were very sandy and punch so you can’t make any putts. It’s not worth spending $79, (walking rates $79, $125, $195) and play somewhere else until the course condition improves!

Why has Harding changed

I have played Harding Park many times since the course was redone to host the 2008 Presidents Cup. From 2008 to 2018, the course played firm with large rolling fairways and great greens. Once the PGA was announced, they grew the rough higher and much more dense than before, narrowed the fairways significantly, and turned the green's speed down to an unbearably slow leve, and

These changes may have been good for hosting that event, but it is a terrible experience for the amateur golfer. Any ball in the rough becomes impossible to hit anything resembling a normal shot, and that is when you are lucky enough to find it. We lost 5 balls that were a few feet off the fairway from the tee.

The greens run at something between a 5 and 7 and are vastly different that any other course in the area.

It's a shame, because the design is amazing and the history of the course is steeped in tons of lore.

Please bring it back to the 2015 level of rough and green speeds.
