The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch
About
The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch (previously known as Salinas Golf & Country Club) in Monterey boasts a reputation as "the friendliest club in the area." Opened in 1925, it's also known as one of the area's oldest clubs though they are loathe to label themselves as "traditional". The golf course sprawls across rolling countryside dotted with mature trees and the occasional water hazard. Originally opened as a nine-hole layout, the golf course may appear somewhat short at just over 6,200 yards from the back tees but don't underestimate its level of difficulty. It's a tight layout that demands accuracy, especially when navigating the small greens. There is plenty of variety at The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch, you may even find yourself using all the clubs in your bag. The golf course finishes with a stunning view of Salinas Valley from an elevated tee. The fairway slopes downhill to a well protected green guarded on the left with trees and on the right with bunkers.

A great track ruined by horrible staff etiquette
This is a truly awesome course. Layout, upkeep/conditions, all around amazing and great value for the area. So why the 1 star?
For starters, our group of 4 shows up for a Friday morning 7:50 tee time, and upon asking about restaurant/refreshments, we’re told the restaurant will be closed the entire day due to a wedding renting out the facilities. Obviously not the wedding’s fault, but a common courtesy from a course in a situation like this would be to notify your paying golfers BEFORE they are scheduled to play that there will not be food/drinks available for purchase due to an event. Showing up for a Friday morning round and being told we can’t buy food/drinks, and there is no refreshment cart covering the course was a bummer way to start the day.
Things went from bad to worse on hole 15 when the “club house pro” (Dom/Dominic) completely ruined our round. Driving into the fairway of hole 15, Dom acting as the course marshal told us we needed to speed up play as we were behind pace. We were on a 4 hour 18-hole pace (finished at 11:51), nobody was waiting behind us on the tee box of hole 15 or any hole before that, and we even confirmed with Dom after the round that nobody had complained or asked him to intervene and have us speed up our pace of play. His reason for having us speed up? Apparently there was a 2 and a half hole distance between us and the group in front of us. What Dom the “club house pro” failed to consider is maybe the groups in front of us could be playing faster because they were scrambling. Maybe they weren’t a full group of 4. Heck, maybe they were hungry and decided to hurry up/skip holes due to a lack of course refreshments and the restaurant being closed.
If nobody is waiting on tee boxes or complaining about pace of play, why would you go out of your way to rush your paying customers off the course? Especially if a full group of 4 is on pace to finish 18 holes in 4 hours on a Friday morning? Dom and the staff at Crazy Horse need to learn standard etiquette and customer service. They ruined a real gem of a course experience.
Hidden Gem of a Course
I am grateful to the members of Crazy Horse Golf Club who allow public course players to enjoy your great course.
You won’t find a better course to play as a fee paying golfer in the area.
Enjoyable time
First time player! The staff was friendly and the course was beautiful. There was a training going on and I think the kitchen was closed for that reason so I cant speak to the food. All in all it was great times and I would definitely play again.
On of the best course nearby
It’s worth 1 hour driving to enjoy the half day there, good condition, friendly staff.
Crazy Horse is fun!
Had a blast at Crazy Horse. Uncrowded and in great shape with a friendly staff and good food. Do it!
Great Course
The course condition was great. We really enjoyed the play.
A gem in Salinas
I have fallen in love with this course. Its private club heredity resonates with every tee box view. I have been playing golf most of my life, and this course is a wonderful challenge and a nice trip through the Salinas agricultural environment. Thanks for allowing public players like me to enjoy it.
Such a great course
I have played Crazy Horse 4 times now. I haven’t always done well, but that’s golf. It is a great course to spend the morning. Had a 9:40 T time, went out as a single. Pace was very good, just a couple groups in front of me. I finished in 3 hours.
Conditions were perfect. T’s, fairways and greens in excellent condition. Those greens are killing me though; maybe I’ll figure them out one day😩.
The pro shop folks are always so polite and friendly, same with the restaurant folks. The weather was perfect, just a slight breeze came up later in the morning..
I love the layout here. The difference between the front 9 and the back 9 incredible, it’s like another course. The practice area is incredible also..’
What a great morning!!!
Gem in the middle of agriculture fields!
Amazing hidden place.
Highly recommend. Staff was super friendly, fairways were lush and greens were true! Def retuning!
Amazing experience: Staff and pace of play
Booked this tee time on Thurs AM for my son and I to get out and spend afternoon together. Arrived 30 mins before tee time and staff told us if we head out in 10 mins, we'd be able to get out before a 4 some. This paved the way to us getting in 18 holes in 3.5 hrs. Still wanting to play another 9 holes, walk into proshop asking how much to play another 9 holes. He looked at computer and turned to me and advised us that we can continue to play 9 "on them" due no one else was booked. Course is in very nice conditions, greens were hard/fast, pin placements were very challenging. 100% coming back.
