Nags Head Golf Club has a traditional Scottish-links layout that is right at home on the windswept terrain of the Outer Banks. Situated along the Roanoke Sound, the rugged coastline and rolling sand dunes perfectly mimic a classic links landscape. The golf course is a shot maker's layout that will test your skills but it is still player friendly enough to appeal to all skill levels. You'll need a sharp short game for sure, but you won't need much length on this rather short layout. Some form of water appears on nearly every hole, including some holes that play right along the Sound, and the undulating greens can be tough. It's a challenging-but-fun round that is worth playing for the scenery alone. Unsurprisingly, Nags Head Golf Club is one of the most popular golf courses in the OBX.

Great Time

Great course, several holes were under water which made play difficult. Also the course was over crowded. We were on time and had to wait 30 minutes to tee off on the first hole. This made for a very long front 9 the back 9 was a better experience.

I’ll be back next year to play again

Nags Head

For the cost I’d expect more. >5 hour round due to cart path only. Short. Some bad pin positions.

Fun course. Staff is great!

Very fun. A lot of scenic views of sound. Not overly difficult but windy conditions increase the challenge. Good value overall.

Back 9 closed due to rain

Back 9 was closed due to rain 2 days ago, no mention when booking on GolfNow. Drove 1 hr to get these and then told we could cancel and get a refund if we wanted. Disappointing when bringing my son to play too. Ended up playing the front 9 twice and no discount offered. No marshall, no drink cart and groups were backed up on every hole. Took 5 hrs to play the 9 twice.

Not my style

It was a well manicured golf course. However, the day we showed up they had just top dressed the greens (in June). Needless to say I was disappointed. I feel like courses need to advertise that. I wouldn’t have booked a tee time there had I known. One of the guys in the pro-shop proceeded to tell me how it was gonna “help” take out some of the break and make the greens play better. What a joke! It pretty much ruined our round. I was VERY disappointed.

On top of that.. the course layout was ridiculous. There was beauty and it was well manicured, but the design was dumb. A ton of blind shots, basically every hole was “target golf.” Some people enjoy that, I’m not one of them. Might have been a better experience had they not put a bunch of sand on the greens the day they showed up. Also, very expensive. I would not go back.

Beautiful Course/Horrible Staff

Let me start by saying the coursewas well-maintained, beautiful, and challenging, probably 4.5 🌟 on course alone. However, upon arrival drove up to the bag drop (even had signs saying "come up, we want to help you") but nobody was there. Sat in the truck for a few minutes and decided to unload the clubs myself. Parked and walked into pro shop, 2 members working 0 other customers. One was on a phone call with a customer, which is understandable, the other, was leaned on the counter scrolling through his cell phone. Stood at the register for nearly 10 minutes (no exaggeration) before the guy scrolling his phone finally looked up and said, can I help you with something? Just checking in, as if me and the 3 other guys wearing golf clothes standing at the register wasnt obvious enough, but got us all checked in and I asked if there was time to hit the range (had 15 minutes to tee off), he said he wouldn't risk it because the course was moving pretty fast. Got to the 1st tee, (marshall was cool at least), but waited an additional 10-15 mins before the group in front of us even got off the tee. All in all could have got 30 minutes of range time had we got there and the actually helped their customers when they walk in.

If your looking for a pretty and/or challenging course in Outer Banks, I'd recommend, but if you're expecting service on par with the price, dont bother. Just a well maintained tourist trap...

Better

NHGL seems much improved. Conditions and pace of play were suspect a few years back. The course was in great shape and pace was decent.

Great course, amenities not quite up to price tag/destination

Course was in excellent shape, though a bit windy. I had a great time and really enjoyed the views of the sound. The layout itself may not be particularly long, but the tightness of the holes alongside the frequent high winds off the ocean makes this a tougher course than many (including the rating) seem to think.

Was really disappointed that the restarting wasn’t open after the round, there were a few groups after us, and it’s during the on season, not sure why the grill closed at 3 (multiple hours before the posted closing). There was also no functioning water fountain, and the bathrooms were kinda messy (they have a separate clubhouse for members). Again, not a dealbreaker, but definitely expect more for a course that is starting to push 150 bucks.

DISRESPECTFUL STAFF

This was my second attempt at giving this course a chance, and unfortunately it will be my last.

The first time I played here, about 18 months ago, I quit after 9 holes because the pace of play was on track for nearly six hours. On top of that, the staff in the pro shop were rude and completely unaccommodating. I chalked it up as a bad day and decided to give the course another shot.

This time was somehow worse.

The pro shop employee I dealt with was one of the most unfriendly and unprofessional staff members I’ve encountered at any golf course. I simply asked what the greens were rolling at that day, and his response was, “Doesn’t matter, just play the course and figure it out.” I was honestly stunned by the attitude. It wasn’t joking or lighthearted—it was outright dismissive and rude.

Golf courses can have great layouts and decent conditions, but customer service matters. If you’re charging people good money to play, basic courtesy should be expected. Two visits, separated by over a year, and the experience with the staff was consistently terrible. If you were the gentlemen working in the pro shop June 18, 2026, you are simply a douchebag.

I wouldn’t return if the rounds were free. There are far too many courses with staff who actually appreciate their customers

Great course for a variety of players

First time in 3 years playing the course and conditions are still excellent. Variety of tees for high to low handicaps. Greens were slightly slower than expected but rolled true and smooth. Fairways were outstanding condition. Did not have one bad lie in the fairway. Tee boxes were level and grass was in good condition. Pace of play was 4:08 for a 7:32 tee time on a Tuesday as a foursome.

Great Course

Loved it, will be back next year. Fairways and greens were pretty soft but they played well, just had to adjust. Beautiful course with a few holes running right along the sound.

Best course I’ve ever played

Every single staff member was nice, the course, pin placement and yardage was all challenging and well maintained. I didn’t think I was going to be able to hit the long ball. But the course was long and open enough to use my driver often (I hit 285-300)

Cost of play

Golf pass was almost 30 dollars more to book than calling the course. Could have played earlier and cheaper than golf pass. Will call course ahead of time for next round.
