Nags Head Golf Links

About
Nags Head Golf Club has a traditional Scottish-links layout that is right at home on the windswept terrain of the Outer Banks. Situated along the Roanoke Sound, the rugged coastline and rolling sand dunes perfectly mimic a classic links landscape. The golf course is a shot maker's layout that will test your skills but it is still player friendly enough to appeal to all skill levels. You'll need a sharp short game for sure, but you won't need much length on this rather short layout. Some form of water appears on nearly every hole, including some holes that play right along the Sound, and the undulating greens can be tough. It's a challenging-but-fun round that is worth playing for the scenery alone. Unsurprisingly, Nags Head Golf Club is one of the most popular golf courses in the OBX.

Several holes run along the sound, and make Nags Head a very picturesque course. Photo submitted by JohnL1848734 on 09/08/2022

Great Experience at Nags Head Golf Links
I had the opportunity to play Nags Head Golf Links during a recent trip, and overall, it was a very enjoyable round. The course offers beautiful views and a solid layout that presents a good challenge—especially with the winds, which were absolutely relentless the day I played. It definitely added to the difficulty, but also made for a memorable experience.
The greens were in excellent condition, smooth and well-maintained, which really stood out. Fairways could use a little more attention, but given that it’s early April, it’s understandable and I imagine they’ll green up nicely as the season progresses.
The starter was friendly and informative, which helped set a great tone for the round. One downside was encountering a five-some on the back nine, which slowed things down a bit, especially on a Friday. It’s not something you typically expect during peak times.
That said, the course itself was really nice, albeit a bit on the pricey side. Still, the views and overall experience made it worthwhile. If I find myself back in Nags Head, I’d definitely come back for another round.
Not for the faint of heart
In spite of the 20+ mph NE winds and sometimes cold, we had a great day playing here. Course is challenging although the tall grass was cut down for the season. Always a pleasure playing here and every staff member we interacted with was friendly and helpfull.
Just Ok
Very short holes from the Blue Tees. Being the first time playing I went by yardage and slope. I am by no way a long hitter but even from these sets of tees I found myself with less than driver.
Unacceptable Pace of Play for a Weekday
I hate to be this guy - but after paying $120 for a weekday late-morning tee time - I was furious to find out they were 45 minutes behind schedule. Weather was perfect - no frost delay or anything. I come to find they spaced out tee times by 8 minutes that day - and when the patrons are paying over $100 for a round during the week you expect to be treated with normal conditions. 4.5 hour round thru 13 - we had to leave because we couldn't stand waiting on every teebox for 15 minutes.
This could be a one-off experience but I felt incredibly slighted when you pay that premium price for public golf you expect at the least to be treated fairly and not a overbooked teesheet ruing the experience for everyone on the course that day. Our grouping was not the only one to experience this.
Thye need to lower their prices if they are going to be fill up the tee sheet with that many players.
Just OK
Play here often. Conditions for winter are off this year. Pace of play was horrible. Greens were receptive and fast.
Amazing Golf
My son and I played nine holes yesterday and it was absolutely spectacular. Weather was great course was in perfect condition and we just had the best time.
Nags Head Golf Links review
I've been playing only 4 years. Always wanted to play a links course! My opportunity came on a vacation trip, and cold windy weather kept the other golfers away. This gave me a chance to relax (no concerns about holding up anyone) and take on the challenge of windy conditions (15-18 mph). I loved it! I made the most pars ever on a course of this level of challenge that I have played. I will return on my next vacation to the area.
