Dan Maples, architect of the nationally acclaimed Pit Golf Links, has created another masterpiece only minutes from the Village of Pinehurst. Longleaf Golf & Family Club was formerly the site of Starland Farms, for years the training ground of some of the country's top thoroughbreds. As a tribute to its colorful history, Maples incorporated some of the features and flavor of the old facility into the golf course, including part of the fence and training track. The front nine at Longleaf was designed in the Scottish open style with subtly rolling fairways. The back nine, in contrast, is heavily tree-lined and dramatically elevated. Ron Whitten of Golf Digest called Longleaf "...the most playable course in Pinehurst."

A good alternative

Great for beginners given the many tee options. The greens were good. The tees were quite dried out and hard. Parts of the fairways lacked grass so the lies were tight.

Good Course for Juniors/Seniors Not Serious Golfers

Great staff. Nice driving range. Course condition not good. Some of the issue was time of year but the weeds all over every green is a maintenance issue. Greens not mowed or rolled. Layout seems the designers ran out of space and had to squeeze tees/greens into leftover spaces. Some of the tee/green physical relationships are hazardous (16 green/17 tee being the worst) .

. Bunkers not raked. Golf cart electronic notices were non-stop, annoying, and time consuming to clear.. As a result, electronic scoring is useless.

It was winter conditions but the greens were great. They have greatly improved this course. The staff was great.

Decent course, overpriced for winter rates

I’ve played this course many many times. Decided to play it while friends were in town. As always the staff is great and the pace was good, but it is definitely a bit overpriced for the course conditions. It’s nowhere near what I expect for a $90 round of golf even in the winter.

Awesome Course

If you’re looking for a Pinehurst experience, this is about as close as you can get off the resort. The two nines are almost completely different styles of courses, which makes for a great variety. I love the way they incorporated the horse track into the back nine, especially on #17. You could make a day out of going to Longleaf with the short course, Bottlebrush, and the little putting course as well. If you’ve gone down to the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area and haven’t played this course, you’re missing out.

Great Course Great People

Will definitely play again. Course was great all around, Tee boxes, fairways and greens. Nothing but wonderful compliments. Clubhouse and course facilities were immaculate and clean. Super important to me.

A note for leadership team: At least a recommendation. We were the very first tee time after the last foursome tee off for the club championship. There was only a 10 minute separation between the two tee times. My recommendation would be to make the tee time separation 30 - 60 minutes.

There no reason not to book and plan on having a wonderful golf day! All the best to all reading!

Amazing

We got a deal because the greens had been aerated, but they were in great shape (we could hardly tell). Course was beautiful, great condition, and the grass was cut correctly (shocking, I know).

This was the best outing we've had this year, we'll definitely be back soon@

Consistent quality

Course conditions were the best I’ve played at. Cart paths are a little confusing for first time golfers. Highly recommend if you’re willing to pay for quality.

Not as good as before

I’ve played here for many years, but haven’t played it in over a year. The conditions have slipped considerably. It’s a great layout and the greens are still good but the fairways and roof are suffering and full of weeds. It’s still a great layout and fun to play, the staff is always friendly and on the ball. I’d recommend as long as you don’t pay too much.

Worth the money

This was equivalent to being a member; bag drop, pro shop, starter, bar & restaurant staff were all super welcoming and professional. As a semi-private Club, many times courses treat outsiders as an annoyance. Not here. Course is testing without being unfair and the multiple tees allow any level of player to enjoy it. The greens are its greatest feature. Fast, undulating, firm but accept a good shot well. Play it!
