The Omni Grove Park Inn

Don’t be fooled by the sub-6,000 yardage on the card. Ross laid out this lush Golden Age course on the side of a mountain, making it play longer than imagined.

All of the par 5s play under 500 yards, but if you don’t hit the fairway off the tee you will be scrambling for a score. I thought the short par 4s were standouts, particularly the sixth and 13th (best green on the property).

Seemingly every hole provides views of the Blue Ridge mountains or the historic inn.

One of the most beautiful courses I have ever played. From the staff to the condition of the golf course, it is one of my favorite places to play and definitely recommend it!!

Fast putting surfaces. A few challenging false fronts and pin placements but an absolutely enjoyable round of golf. $175 is pretty steep but the conditions and pace of play were both outstanding.

I really enjoyed this course. The layout is routed beautifully off the mountainside making great use of the elevations and property features. There is a good variety of long and short holes. The greens are great, with nice slopes, ridges, false fronts, and are tied into the surroundings. Most have a opening to run shots up but are protected through slopes or bunkers on one side or the other. Some nice dogleg holes are used and some pretty views of the mountains play into the experience. Although trees are located throughout, you never feel confined off the tee and you have plenty of room. A top-notch experience.

Very good course inaa very good condition. Soft greens and a few tricky

Title pretty much says it all. It's an ok course, but not even remotely close to being worth what they're charging. It's worth an $80 greens fee, max. It's a shame, because Asheville could really use a somewhat affordable public course close to town other than the muni.

You can’t go wrong with Donald Ross, but the lack of a range, slow greens (pm), inconsistent bunkers, and a high price means the value is less than it should be.

My two beefs are as follows. Some of the bunkers (including greenside) are Georgia clay. My sand wedge bounced on one hole and the second greenside made me did dig deep to clear a high lip. This course should have only ONE sand type. No excuses.

Next…and this has much to do with inconsiderate players, when you leave a ball mark on the green, fix the mark! I fixed 2 or 3 per hole in addition to my own.

At this green fee, the course should give out ball repair tools (probably 5 cents each) and encourage and remind players to repair the marks.

Pro shop said greens were 13 on the stimp. In the afternoon it’s more like 8. Donald Ross greens are designed to be fast but these were slow.

The layout is great. The course is fun with some memorable holes. And it’s quite beautiful.

Last comment…I paid $1300 to stay 2 hours nights. The guy I played with stayed elsewhere and was charged $5 less to play than me.

Treat your customers better than that Omni.

The course itself and staff were great. It was in great condition. My only complaint is that many of the pins were borderline illegal and a couple were for sure. There was a pin to where a putt up the hill, if it wouldn’t go in the hole would end up 10-15 feet back down the hill at your feet. That’s pretty silly. We decided that hole should be a 2 putt max. And that shouldn’t be the case when you’re paying $200 a round. Most others were just very challenging, but that one was down right unfair. Overall I would be back, but would be weary of the pin locations.

Great course, excellent conditions. Staff very friendly. Amenities very good.

Course is currently in very good shape, fun to play when dry

This course is a must play if you are in Asheville. The Donald Ross design with beautiful mountain views, elevation changes, well placed hazards and fair but somewhat tricky greens was a treat. The level of service with the staff was top notch, the golf carts were comfy with GPS, bathrooms on the course were clean and secure, and there was even full service food and bar at the turn. We would definitely play again.

Front nine zipped along until back nine behind walkers and it took forever on a hot day. The back nine has more repetition of up and down hills and it’s hard to detect the false fronts without local knowledge so a pin high shot can roll 30 yards off the green. Condition was great and scenic. Get a hot deal it’s not that crowded as it would seem and they are understaffed. Warning there are a lot of deceptive lines off the tees due to blind landing areas tough when you lack local knowledge.
