Mostly about the greens!
Beautiful Donald Ross course in a resort setting. It has the just right variety of long/short par 3's,long/short par 4's & reachable/3 shot par 5's.To me the course played longer than the scorecard, maybe because of the elevation changes. Choose your tee boxes carefully to avoid longer approach shots than your skill level will allow .Less frustration if you can stay below the hole or hole high on your approach. These greens are very very tricky & challenging. All the staff was very friendly/helpful. With the exception of a few soggy low areas I found the overall course conditions above average; as they should be for the rates they charge.
Beautiful scenery!
Several of the holes have spectacular views. The course is wet so the balls will not roll out. We will go back in the future.
Enjoyed
We enjoyed our day at the Grove Park golf course.
Course reminded us of other Donald Ross courses we have played.
Breaks on the greens a bit tricky but I guess it takes local knowledge.
Over all experience was good.
the greens are too much for a regular player. even the locals can not read them.
not a long course, but not a lot of fun. the greens are too hard to read. if you are above the hole, you may findyour ball rolling off the green
Grove Park
Great condition. Over priced! Friendly staff outside. Easy course for average player.
Good, classic Golf Course.
The course is a Ross classic. The greens here are the equalizer. Certainly worth playing, but I enjoyed using Golf Now instead of the regular rate. The staff was very informative and friendly. The cart guys were very nice and helpful. I certainly would play this course again.
Betiful but no worth the rate!!!!
If you can book on golf now for under $100 the course is well worth it. The rack rate is $140 Mon - Thur and $160 on Fri - Sun. Although a very beautiful curse it is very beat up. Players are not repairing divots or ball marks. I expected, for the price, for the course to be better cared for by the players.18 is the most beautiful unique hole that I have ever played. I have never experienced greens so difficult. I didn't make one putt out of 42 holes that I played. The ball seemed to roll uphill and if I thought it would break one way it would go the opposite.
Mountain views in the city
Always like playing the the Grove Park Inn. Beautiful layout with gorgeous views. Have 1 complaint however and have suggested this many times. The course is very expensive, there are coolers on each golf cart. How about 2 nice cold bottles of water on each cart as part of the green fees guys? Certainly would be a nice touch for such a prestigous resort.
Love this golf course!
Been to Grove Park several times but played the course for the first time yesterday. Great experience! The course was in great shape and the greens were lightning fast. It is a relatively short course so I played the black tees. The three par 5's are very reachable in two but the par 3's are definitely a challenge from the blacks as they ranged from about 180 to 220 yards today.
The pace was awesome. I played as a single but paired up with another player on the 4th hole and we finished in little over 3 hours.
I highly recommend playing this course and plan to come back in the fall.
Donald Ross Gem
The course was in great shape. Playing these greens made me appreciate how difficult the greens were at the U. S. Open last week. Grove Park plays a little longer than the yardage on the scorecard.
Good conditions. Fast undulating greens.
Good conditions. Fast undulating greens.
Many classic Donald Ross false fronts to greens.
Multiple dramatic elevation changes from tee.
They charge $160 on wked. I paid $75 via golfnow
which was on the high end of reasonable for course.
No driving range nor practice area. Only putting green. Not what you'd think for $160 course.
lightning greens
Good course, greens lightning fast.easy three putt.
One off the "Bucket List"
Classic Donald Ross course. If you can find the fairway off the tee you'll have a great day. Tee shot placement takes precedence over length. Awesome Greens. Fast and rolling true. As with most resort courses, you will always have a few novice players that don't know about fixing ball marks or pace of play. But with that said , if you have the opportunity this course is a "Must Play". I hope to come back!
Beautiful Facility
A very nice course in a beautiful setting . A bit pricey for the area , but it was very well tended and in the best condition of the area courses we played.
Not quite a "mountain course " but the hills do throw inboth some interest and challenges .
Worth about half
This course is way over priced for the area but that's what you get for playing a resort course. Fortunately I didn't pay anywhere near full rate, thanks golfnow! Now aside from the cost Grove Park is a pretty nice course with several good holes particularly on the front nine. Its a par 70 but for any golfer with reasonable length it plays more like a par 67 since all three par fives measure under 500 yds. Condition of the course is probably the best of any public course within 45 miles or so and the greens where quite fast, you definitely want to keep your approach shot below the flag. At the rack rate of $160 I could never recommend this course but half that and I'd say "Go Play".
Beautiful and Scenic
1st time playing this beautifully managed course. Staff was very professional, friendly and helpful. We will be returning to play again. Wild turkeys were all around the course. Very Scenic and well kept golf course.
Overrated and overpriced....
Probably worth $45 MAX to play here. It's just an OK course, though. Much better golf for less money within a 30 minute drive of here. If I paid their usual $100 or so in season to play here, I would be ANGRY, I know that much. If you can find a round here for $35-$45 it's OK, but otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it.
Beautiful, classic course
Started out as a single, picked up a great bargan on a "bucket list" course through Golf Now. Started cold and windy, ended with spectacular views. Also conencted with a couple of local golfers which was the icing on a great round of golf.
Decent Course
Needs a cart girl or at least better choices of refreshments and food in the club house.
Oldie but a goodie
The Grove Park Inn is iconic in the mountains of Western North Carolina. That said, the resort itself has seen better times. New owner Omni hotels is making improvements to the old locker rooms and around the clubhouse. The course is in good shape, although it's not necessarily the highest quality you will find at other high-end resorts around the country. That said, the Donald Ross design is challenging and fun to play. As much as I hate to say it, the sand traps are a pleasure -- some of the best in the mountains. I played on a March day when high winds and cold were forecast for later, and I think that scared off a lot of people. But the conditions were perfect for golf (60s and no wind) and I practically had the course to myself. Played 18 in 2.5 hours and loved it.
