New owners trashing golf course
I started playing mt Mitchell in early 2000’s. Course was always in great condition then and up until around 2018. Wasn’t kept up as nice.
New owners took over about 1 1/2 ago and you could tell. By May and June crabgrass and weeds were everywhere. By august, September they were losing some of their greens. This year I drove up and thought the course was closed. I have never saw the grass so over grown. Bunkers unplayable, greens were in awful shape. Grass was to tall from tees to greens.
This used to be my favorite course, sad to say not anymore. I paid $35 and only played 8 holes before we left. I wouldn’t pay that to play maybe $25 at best for that trash!!!!
To be fair they had new carts with gps were very nice, probably why the $70 round is so expensive for conditions. Also had nice green sand for divot repairs.
My opinion new owners spent money in wrong places. Update club house and new carts. Should’ve upgraded golf course first to get money rolling in, then should’ve done the other things second. Obviously never owned golf courses before!!!!
Great Mountain air, thats about it! OVER-PRICED
Been golfing for decades… however I had not played here for 20 yrs for some odd reason. Nice quiet area, with nice scenic views! I understand that new ownership hopes to improve the conditions however thats going to be an uphill battle given what we experienced! The $70 to play is well… ridiculous. I play far nicer conditioned course in NC weekly that are under $40. But then again when a course is sold, its generally a sign that its profitability is no longer worth the effort & cost. As is the case with most courses in the South that are sold, new buyers are from outside the area (often recently retired themselves) and come in with high hopes & increased prices. Carts have recently been kept of the fairways here trying to improve the grasses! I applaud that decision, and hope this rule remains. The #1 change i have witnessed in the golf course industry over the past decade is the ‘entitled’ golfer syndrome… golfers who feel they are free to do as they please. If you can’t walk 30 yards you don’t need to be playing golf!s. Sorry.. enough about that. The future here will prove interesting, and I wish them luck… given the short golf season at this elevation, sparse surrounding population and severe winters, things may prove challenging. By mid-summer I’m sure the conditions here will be good. It is a very scenic location for golf.

sadly this golf course was destroyed by Helene’s rains. The equipment has been sold and the land is up for sale!

Correction as i was referring to weekdays.
$89 weekends, $70 weekdays!
No senior rates.
Great day!
Everyone was super friendly and helpfull. Scenery is absolutely gorgeous.
Beautiful Mountain Views
Beautiful views of the North Carolina Mountains. Course conditions were good, course can play very wet at times.
Must play course in the North Carolina Mountains.
Great staff and course
First time playing and was greeted by a great staff. Arrived an hour before tee time and had a frost delay but we started in time. Course was in great condition abd found the front nine was easier playing than the back nine but overall we loved this course and will definitely return to play it again. I highly recommend others of all levels of play to try this course.
Always beautiful
While the course is not in the condition of years past, it is still a jewel and always beautiful. The fall leaves were spectacular and everyone was so hospitable. Trout by #1 green bigger than ever.
3.5/5
Good public course, very scenic, good layout for holes, in need of renovations on the greens. Everything else is up to par
Great views good course
The clubhouse and course are a bit old school, but friendly and helpful. The course we in good shape, interesting layout( lots of doglegs). Beautiful views of the mount Mitchell , runs along a river through most of the course greens were slow but true.
Beautiful course
I play Mt Mitchell at least once a month, it's one of my favorite courses. As others have said, there are 5 or 6 greens that have a fungus issue but the staff does a good job of working around that. Maybe some tree trimming or removal would help, but they still roll true.
The fairways and tee boxes are in great shape! The bunkers are in good shape, a few could use a rake job. Please rake your footprints!
With the leaves changing colors, now is the time to get out and play! Bring your camera and buy some fish food to feed the humongous rainbow trout!
You can ride on the fairways now which is great
I always enjoy playing this course despite the rough being too high. The greens are under repair due to the hot summer but course is a challenge n fun to play

Get back to me in a year or two about how that driving on the fairways has affected grass conditions and compacted soil! These lush fairways are directly related to many years of keeping cart off of them!
Great course!
This course is a lot more narrow than I thought it would be, which makes you think about your tee shot a little bit more. Though at the time the course is dealing with a fungus problem on some of the greens it’s still rolled beautifully. I played with two guys that have been coming there for 15 straight years and they said it was the best greens they’ve ever seen there. Also, apparently there’s a lot of changes that is making it much more player friendly. The staff is fantastic. Highly recommend.
Wet yet Beautiful. A Favorite in Western NC
Sadly our experience was tarnished because of 3” of rain in the previous 48 hrs, including 2” the night before so we were lucky the course was even open. It was cart path only, lots of standing water throughout the course including on the greens which made putting challenging. Bunkers were washed out and full of water. This is however one of my favorite mountain layouts in Western NC. Beautiful mountains surround the course and the streams that run through the course can be heard on at least 12 holes bringing a calming quietness to the round. Monster Rainbow Trout can be seen at multiple locations on the course. Unlike many mountain courses, while there are some elevation changes this course isn’t tricked up and the greens are difficult and deep front to back, but they are fair. Some of the greens were suffering from some kind of blight, but they were still smooth and they did not place the pins in the damaged areas. Would recommend playing here anytime, and I am sure the colors would be spectacular in the fall.

Scfatalbert has it right. This golf course needs lots of work, and I mean lots. I wouldn't call it cow pasture golf, but right now it is on the way. In fact, the best thing to do would be to close it for a year and start fresh with new grass on the course, tees through greens. But that probably won't happen unless the new owners have deep pockets. With tender loving care it could be a very nice "holiday course" as the Brits say. I wish them luck.
Lets hope course conditions here improve. Hopefully they won’t allow some young maint superintendent to come in at ruin the course with todays ‘easy way out’ lazy philosophy of removing trees and filling-in sand traps! I have witnessed numerous courses in the piedmont ruined in the past decade due to such! They have a gem here at MMGC but without any emotional attachment to its history it can easily get ruined at the expense of greed & profit!
I tend to agree with you. Sadly, however, in todays media world many gullible customers by-in to what Owners Post everywhere on social media! You can ‘reimagine’ a golf course or change its name to ‘resort’ all you want…. its still a $40 Golf Course at best!
