Tanglewood Golf Club - Championship Course
About
Since Tanglewood Golf Club's Championship Course opened in 1958 it has consistently ranked as one of the top public courses in the U.S. This Robert Trent Jones layout has 99 bunkers. It was designed to test the best golfers in the world and fits Jones' design philosophy of "easy bogey, hard par." RTJ believed the long iron shot separated the championship golfer from the average golfer and created several holes with that in mind. The seventh and 12th holes, both par 3s, play over 230 yards from the back tees. The par-4 11th hole is 490 yards. Fortunately for the recreational golfer, Jones built multiple teeing grounds to Tanglewood's Championship Course enjoyable for all skill levels.

Good value
Played the back tees and it's definitely a challenging track. Good mix of birdie holes and challenging holes. Biggest reason I didn't give it 5-stars is because the bunkers were a disaster. There are lots of them and for the most part they were just hard red clay/dirt and not much sand at all.
Not a great practice area. Range was really beat up and there really isn't anywhere to practice your short game, as the putting green doesn't allow chipping. Overall, it was definitely a good value and I'd play there again. Course definitely has a lot of potential should they find the budget to make some changes.
Championship Course
I grew up playing this course and conditions were good. There were a lot of divots in the greens that were not repaired. Overall the greens were true and faster than expected. The fairways were in good condition and most of the tee boxes were as well. Pace of play was slow especially on the back 9. Enjoyed the round but it was hard to get in a rhythm with the long wait between shots.
I agree w/igotthisone
igotthisone pretty much nailed it with the review. The layout is very good, I mean it's hosted PGA & Senior events but the was years ago. No sand bottles for divots. Greens good but but unfixed ball marks (players fault but...). GolfNow discount made it a good value and the deer roaming around were nice/relaxing.
Championship layout by a master designer
A unique opportunity to play a public course that has hosted a major championship. The layout and design of this Robert Trent Jones masterpiece offer a true sense of what the pros face in a high caliber course which feels like it has the capability to still test the best players. The course is well bunkered from tee to green and requires accuracy and length from the tee, while the greens have multiple tiers which require careful club selection.
Fallen from Grace
I've played this course over the years and like so many courses this has been on a decline due to the economy and declining revenue. I love the course layout, the history, the challenge but it needs a bit of love. The bermuda on the tees and several fairways is thin for this time of year. The greens are good, very soft so you can go after the pin but as a result the greens are scarred due to people not repairing ball marks. Traps are assorted, some have recently had top grade white sand like that at Augusta and others are basically red gravel. Overall, it is a good round but I'm sad to see this poor course age like it is without getting the love it deserves.
Getting a little shabby around the edtes
Tanglewood championship course is a real golf challenge, and it all comes around the greens. The course is covered with sand traps. Fairway traps re well situated to catch your slices, but it's easy enough to stay out of them.
The greenside traps on the other hand, gobble up everything that doesn't hit the putting surface. Bring your best iron game.
JUst getting on the green, however, isn't enough. Most are multi-tiered and have subtle breaks everywhere.
The greens are in excellent shape, and a well hit putt will keep its line.
Sadly, the care of the tee boxes and fairways seems to have fallen off, and they are not in great shape. There are lots of bare spots and weeds are creeping in.
Too bad. this is a gem of a course that is now at risk at falling into B status.
Great Course
The course was fun to play and a good challenge. It was nice to play there and see the memorabilia from tour events in the past. We were treated well and had a good time.

no problem with the course itself. problem we had and the group in front of us is that our tee times were not received by course employees. "worked us in" and tried to charge me (again) for playing even after I had given them the receipt I had printed out. good thing I carried it with me. my first time using golfnow. will try it one more time and see if it is worth using in the future. very frustrating being told you don't have a tee time.......
Great course!
It needs a little TLC. Some tee boxes were thin, fairway were nice. Greens rolled smooth but were a little slow. Overall great course, very challenging with tons of tradition!
Good course lots of bunkers
Great layout with nice greens, protected by plenty of bunkers. Played in the middle of the day 4 hour round.
Bang for your buck
Great conditions. Staff very informative and friendly. Course is tough but fair. Would recommend to all skill levels.
Great Course
Played here several times. Tanglewood Championship Course is a great course and a great challenge. It's far from an easy course. Don't come here expecting to pull out driver on every hole. Also, you may want to bring some sunscreen, a pale, and a shovel...b/c you will probably spend some time on the beach! Lots of bunkers and most of them come into play! Somehow, I found a tee time for $20, what a deal for this course!
Championship Quality
This is a great traditional championship quality course. Has held up to modern technology. Only issue was slow, soft greens but that is to be expected in late June. This would be a 5 star plus course with upgrade to bermuda greens.
Still a classic
I very much enjoyed my round on the championship course. I played in the afternoon and as it was very hot the course was not crowded which made playing as a single fine. It is a heavily played public course but is still in good condition.
Very nice facility
Course in good condition, greens were really nice. Front side could be figured out , having never seen, from the tee. Back side a different story, blind tee shots the biggest problem. Overall we played at a great pace and when held up were let through without a problem. Would recommend and play again when in the area.
Great course! I wish I lived closer
This course was clearly designed well and has a good history. It was relaxing, yet challenging; and you're almost guaranteed to end up in the sand at some point (or in my case, on every other shot).
I don't think I have played a better course for the price I paid.
Needs conditioning
Greens are not bad, a little slow. Fairways are OK but have patches where there are some bare spots. This course has a lot of traps and the traps were not maintained. Many of the traps had water in them, and many were unplayable. Small staff working on them will take days just to drain and rake. If municipalities want to own courses, they need to maintain this course or sell it to someone that will take care of it.
Course very open
Even thought the championship course was very long and has an abundance of challenging bunkers on most every hole, the course is very open. You weren't challenged on narrow holes. The distance instead was challenging. Great course overall.
Bunkers Need Work
Course was formerly used by both the Senior Tour and PGA Tour. Great layout. Lots of bunkers. Problem is the bunkers are not well maintained. Some have a great deal of sand and others are hard packed. Bunkers provide the teeth to this course and it is maintained the least. Greens pretty good. Maybe just a little slow.
1974 PGA Championship
Great layout with lots of intimidating shots. It's nice being able to play a championship course for a price you would have paid in 74!
