Challenge Golf Club sprawls across a scenic stretch of rolling farmland that sits alongside the Haw River. The lush hills are accented with mature hardwood forests, providing a scenic setting for a round of golf. The hilly terrain on this golf course will test not only your shot-making abilities but also your accuracy. Lakes provide even more natural hazards. Golfers can expect a few perilous carries over water. To add to the layout's difficulty, there are numerous bunkers strategically placed along the greens. The golf course is arguably one of the area's most formidable tests. Although thoughtful strategy and creative shot making will be generously rewarded, it’s not an overly punishing layout. Challenge Golf Club's final hole is a memorable par 5 that's definitely tough, but if you play it smart it could also be a great birdie opportunity.

Another Good Day

I played The Challenge a month ago and gave a Good/Excellent review. We played again yesterday and had another great time. Course is in great shape. The only question I had would be that a couple of the Yellow Tees (we played from) had what seemed to be odd/ nonstandard tee locations where the tee area wasn't as flat as it should be. But this was minor. We had a tee time at 1 PM on a Thursday and never rain into another group ahead of us or had a group catch up to us from behind - we basically had the course to ourselves so pace of play was perfect..

Course in Great Shape, Lots of Slow Plat

Course is in GREAT shape, weather was perfect so there were a lot of golfers out there. For a threesome it was a 4.5 hour round, much too slow for us speedy players

Name Fits

Play this course a couple times per year. This course rewards accuracy and punishes those who cannot stay in the fairway. Lots of terrain to deal with, as well as bunkers, water and woods. Bring your 'A' game and enjoy a challenging round.

For the average golfer, the course presents a challenge true to its name, but is fair. If you hit the ball with a reasonable degree of accuracy you will be fine. If you tend to spray your shots as many golfers do, there is a lot of trouble to find in the form of trees, ponds, and natural habitat areas, but nothing unfair. The greens were in excellent condition.

What I hoped for

The course was in great shape. The greens were fast and true but holding. We were first off so pace of play was not an issue.

The Challenge Golf Club

Great course in a beautiful North Carolina setting. Played at 7:39 not 11:39...There was some morning dew and moisture on the course but overall it was a beautiful morning for golf! Trees trees and more trees! You gotta be straight here. Lots of slopes and undulation and lightning fast pro style Bermuda greens. If you want a par score its not for the high handicapper like me but lots of fun nonetheless. The name says it all. The Challenge Golf Club was definitely a challenge.

Best bang for the buck I've ever seen.

The course was in great condition, even after a deluge of rain the previous day. Fairways were plush and greens were challenging but consistent. Really a great round of golf.

Excellent All-around Experience

Played today for the first time at the Challenge in several years. Had a great time. Tne course is in very good condition from tees to fairways to greens. The layout is tough but playable and very fair - many interesting holes. Pace of play was great - course wasn't crowded.. The snack bar facility has somewhat limited but sufficient menu - I got a pimento cheese sandwich and chips for $3.00. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Overall a real good experience. I'll be back.

Pleasant surprise

I got a hot deal on Golfnow. This is my first time playing here. I enjoyed the course very much. Would have been great to play with someone who knew the layout. Some holes I wasn’t sure what to hit off the tee. Fairways and greens were in very good shape. I’ll definitely be coming back to play.

Hidden Gem

If you haven’t played the Challenge before, you will find that its title lives up to your expectation. While a couple tee boxes need some attention, the Bermuda greens are quick and in fantastic shape. Some holes are straight forward but the topography keeps you on your toes.

I’m a 12 and played the Blue tees and scored in sync with my handicap. About a 40 minute drive from RDU, it’s a reasonable distance and worth the $1.00 you may spend in gas to get there.

Excellent course

The course is in great shape. Faom tee to green, the course is well manicured. Greens rolled beautifully and were quick. Course layout is nice with turns and elevation changes. I like that they offer green tees...a mix of white and blue for those who want to play more than 6,000 yards but less than 6,500. Staff was incredibly friendly and helpful with tips to play a few holes as this was my first time. But won't be my last! An hiur+ drive for me but I will be returning regularly!

Great Greens

The greens were in excellent shape. There was only 1 hole that had significant crab grass growing around the edge. We were the first group out at 7:30 and we finished in 3 hours. There are certainly holes that are very challenging and others that allow you to gain a few strokes. The only room for improvement I would suggest is cutting the grass on the tee boxes down. This is a great course. I've played here 4 or 5 times. There is a hitting net for players to get loose. No need to buy range balls and the putting green is next to it for an easy transition. There wasn't any cart service at the time we played, so that may have changed, later in the day.

Playing great

The Challenge does test your skills, but it is playable. Greens were recently punched, but they were well sanded and otherwise in great shape. Overall, the course conditions were very good.
