The Challenge Golf Club
About
Challenge Golf Club sprawls across a scenic stretch of rolling farmland that sits alongside the Haw River. The lush hills are accented with mature hardwood forests, providing a scenic setting for a round of golf. The hilly terrain on this golf course will test not only your shot-making abilities but also your accuracy. Lakes provide even more natural hazards. Golfers can expect a few perilous carries over water. To add to the layout's difficulty, there are numerous bunkers strategically placed along the greens. The golf course is arguably one of the area's most formidable tests. Although thoughtful strategy and creative shot making will be generously rewarded, it’s not an overly punishing layout. Challenge Golf Club's final hole is a memorable par 5 that's definitely tough, but if you play it smart it could also be a great birdie opportunity.

Par three, 16th green Birdie was made Photo submitted by Geno7176732 on 10/15/2017
Nice and challenging
Course was a bit wet from the recent rain and snow, but it played nicely considering. Par 3s are fun, a few par 4s are reachable in 2, as are a couple of the par 5s. Not much water, but a lot of beach. I enjoyed it.
Sat golf
Very nice course. Would recommend and play again. Definitely worth the money and drive
This is a great course
Course overall in pretty good shape. Challenging on lots of holes. Greens in good shape
Gradually becoming a low tier course
I have played here many times and gradually the experience just keeps getting worse. It has as much to do with the staff friendliness as it does with the course. When we checked in there was an issue with the online system and I checked with the Pro Shop multiple times on how much was owed, they told me and we paid. On the 4th or 5th hole, a staff member pulls up to us while we are walking off the green and aggressively, rudely, and with a look of disgust states something like "you never paid". When we explained that we did and that there was an issue, he just shrugged it off and we offered to pay on the turn and he just rolled his eyes, said ok, and drove off. One more thing, after we paid the first time, after not before, the pro shop then tells us that there were multiple holes that were playing as par 3's not the regular par 5/4. While on the course, not only were holes shortened but also about half of their greens were infested with some kind of ground wasp and on two holes there were wasps inside the cup so we didn't want to risk getting stung so we didn't putt out. Overall the experience was not a positive one, the course still has potential but I won't come back until next season if I come back at all.
Challenge
Course was in terrible shape I've been playing here for about 8 years always enjoyed the course but with the fairways in the shape there in I will not be back here until next year . The sad part was when I checked in I was even made aware of the course condition.
Great Course Layout
Great course that provides challenging holes, but plays well. Fairway grass is being restored from last winter damage, but we'll under way. Good value for a enjoyable round. Good club house and staff.
Great Course
Other than the 5 fairways that were being re sprigged because of the harsh winter, the course was in great shape. The greens were receptive and putting true!!
Unfortunately I lost $2!!
Twist my arm to return
This place was in terrible shape with no warning from staff who had to audacity to charge full price. This coupled with the rudeness of the staff is something I will not soon forget. I will not return any time soon and from what I hear neither will a lot of people. They act like they are doing you a favor letting you place this goat track. Management needs to clean house. There is only one employee who needs to be kept. I estimate at this pace this place will soon follow Quarry Hills.
Course under repair
I usually like this course and thought I was getting a great deal. I didn't know that they lost as many fairways as they did. 5 par 4/5 holes were reduced to par 3s due to the loss of the fairway. I wouldn't have been as mad had they disclosed upfront.
Greens were in fair shape.
Hopefully by the fall, the course will be back to the course I enjoyed previously.
Poor Challenge
The course was in poor shape. The issue was there was no warning. The course should have offered a discount. There are too many other courses to play. My group will not be going back to play.
Pro Shop Wasn't Upfront
I booked a tee time for 9. Was told cart path only, and they were doing some work on the fairways. He did not mention that a good majority of the par 4's and 5's were converted to 3's because the fairways were completely ripped up. I like this course, and will probably play it again, but I didn't appreciate the pro shop not being forthcoming about the condition of the course. I left after playing 3 holes. They would not refund my money, instead giving me a rain check. Employees need to be more open and honest. I was not pleased at all.
This course is not worth the price right now
The course is in HORRIBLE shape. I paid $36 dollars and the course has several holes that were par 4s and par 5s that was made par 3s because the fairways had been destroyed. Hornets had even made home to most of the greens. Several times I was afraid to putt for getting stung. Definitely not worth $36. Maybe $20 at the most!
Worst experience
My tee time was at 3:04 and I started around 3:30. There was huge traffic in front of us and the course never took care of the pace. Took us more than 5 hours to finish 18 holes. Course condition was horrible. Hard to find grass area on the fairway. Completely wasted such a good weather which is not happening very often . I still gave 2 stars for the value for the money because it was cheap but I would never come back again.
Give it 3-5 weeks
Love the layout and it's a nice challenge/fair golf course. The thing is the winter was unkind to portions of fairways and tee boxes. The greens and areas around the greens are great. They will be closing for 1 week following the 4th and will be a modified version for 3-5 weeks July 10 or so to August 10th or so. It's still playable if you go before then. Good value. Be carful about overbooking. We had a 5 hour 18'hole round on June 28 and it was not necessary. No Marshall on the course lead to back to back 2:30 9s. Please monitor your pace of play.
Great Layout, Poor Maintenance
This course has terrible winter kill but is also poorly maintained in general. I would only recommend it if you are paying less than $20.
Great Greens
As with most courses in this area, The Challenge took a hit from winter weather. BUT, they have been able to keep the greens and course in excellent condition.
This course is more like a NC mountain course with lots of up and down hills. A great challenging course for most high handicappers.
could be great....
the challenge could be a great course... i remember when it was... that was 5-7 years ago. while greens are in great shape.... the rest of the course is not. most of the fairways are dead and large sections of sod have been removed from the tees to start growing grass in other areas. i was last here 3 years ago and was disappointed in the condition then.... it's worse now and i doubt i'll be back.... ever. it's a shame... course is close, easy to access off of 40.... and, sadly, just falling apart.
oh, and by the way, it was great the last two years, you just happened to hit it first when real estate people had purchased it and didn't care (long gone) and now after the entire area was damaged with winter kill due to freezing in late March.
By August you will enjoy it again. They had really bad winter kill as many of the courses in central NC have had this year (even Rocky River in Charlotte has temp tees right now due to sprigging). It has grown back a lot (since you were there) with the excellent care given to it by the superintendent and his staff. And now that it's warm enough to plant bermuda they are sprigging the remaining areas. Will play to a reduced 66 par for July as a few holes had to be shortened to keep carts off the sprigging but they will be gradually opened back up as the bermuda takes hold. Superintendent is excellent and it will be it's old self soon.
THIS for $30??
I met some golf pals from Raleigh, and this course was in the perfect middle spot for travel. Good start.
The carts seemed newer, so that was cool. That was about as good as it got, unfortunately. We were placed behind a 5-some that didn't care about pace. There was a single player behind us, so we asked him to join us and fill out our 4-some. There was then a 3-some behind us that failed to see the problem with hitting into us. A course ranger came by at least 5 times, stopped to observe, but failed to do ANYTHING to speed up the 5 guys ahead of us OR slow down the 3 dudes behind us. Really annoying. Five + hours later, we rolled into the clubhouse. The course itself was the color of hay and pretty dead everywhere.
The food was cold and the sodas were warm.
I'm thinking that we won't go back.
What happened?
I had a family member in town and booked through a Golf Now. Everyone at the course was friendly but I was shocked at the condition of the golf course. The tee boxes and fairways were dead. There was very little grass anywhere. The greens were in excellent shape and were very true. This used to be one of the best kept courses in the area. It is a shame and hopefully they get it back soon.
All of the courses in the area are suffering from the same thing right now. Not sure what happened this winter, but whatever it was it didn't affect the greens, just the fairways and tees. They are doing a lot of work to bring them back.
Winter kill was tough on the course but it's no where near as bad as you make it sound. They reseeded the tee boxes and so some were closed, they have punched to get ready for sprigging (mostly on the back), and the greens are in excellent shape. The greenskeeper has done a fantastic job dealing with the problems he has had this year and he and his workers do a very good job of taking care of the course. Go play the private Stoney Creek down the road (if they open back up anytime soon) and then you will see how good he really is.
