The Challenge Golf Club
About
Challenge Golf Club sprawls across a scenic stretch of rolling farmland that sits alongside the Haw River. The lush hills are accented with mature hardwood forests, providing a scenic setting for a round of golf. The hilly terrain on this golf course will test not only your shot-making abilities but also your accuracy. Lakes provide even more natural hazards. Golfers can expect a few perilous carries over water. To add to the layout's difficulty, there are numerous bunkers strategically placed along the greens. The golf course is arguably one of the area's most formidable tests. Although thoughtful strategy and creative shot making will be generously rewarded, it’s not an overly punishing layout. Challenge Golf Club's final hole is a memorable par 5 that's definitely tough, but if you play it smart it could also be a great birdie opportunity.

Great Greens
As with most courses in this area, The Challenge took a hit from winter weather. BUT, they have been able to keep the greens and course in excellent condition.
This course is more like a NC mountain course with lots of up and down hills. A great challenging course for most high handicappers.
could be great....
the challenge could be a great course... i remember when it was... that was 5-7 years ago. while greens are in great shape.... the rest of the course is not. most of the fairways are dead and large sections of sod have been removed from the tees to start growing grass in other areas. i was last here 3 years ago and was disappointed in the condition then.... it's worse now and i doubt i'll be back.... ever. it's a shame... course is close, easy to access off of 40.... and, sadly, just falling apart.
THIS for $30??
I met some golf pals from Raleigh, and this course was in the perfect middle spot for travel. Good start.
The carts seemed newer, so that was cool. That was about as good as it got, unfortunately. We were placed behind a 5-some that didn't care about pace. There was a single player behind us, so we asked him to join us and fill out our 4-some. There was then a 3-some behind us that failed to see the problem with hitting into us. A course ranger came by at least 5 times, stopped to observe, but failed to do ANYTHING to speed up the 5 guys ahead of us OR slow down the 3 dudes behind us. Really annoying. Five + hours later, we rolled into the clubhouse. The course itself was the color of hay and pretty dead everywhere.
The food was cold and the sodas were warm.
I'm thinking that we won't go back.
What happened?
I had a family member in town and booked through a Golf Now. Everyone at the course was friendly but I was shocked at the condition of the golf course. The tee boxes and fairways were dead. There was very little grass anywhere. The greens were in excellent shape and were very true. This used to be one of the best kept courses in the area. It is a shame and hopefully they get it back soon.
All of the courses in the area are suffering from the same thing right now. Not sure what happened this winter, but whatever it was it didn't affect the greens, just the fairways and tees. They are doing a lot of work to bring them back.
Nice greens
Dormant Bermuda fairways but greens in very nice shape
Challenge needs some work
I've played the Challenge several times before. Very nice layout, but yesterday it was in the worst shape I've ever seen it. It's almost May, but the fairways were more dirt than dead grass. The only green to be found was on the Greens, which I thought were in pretty good shape. The fairway was in such rough shape, one of my playing partners broke the shaft of his 8 iron near his hands on a shot attempt near the center of the fairway. Tee boxes were also bare, but looked as though they had been plugged. Several bunkers were marked off, Ground Under Repair (they needed it). Hopefully this course will get some TLC and improve.
Tough, fair course
In typical pre-spring condition. Not green, maybe in 2-3 weeks, and greens punched about 3 weeks ago. It's a good course and will only get better once we get later into spring summer. No complaints.
Great Layout that is challenging bur fair.
Great Layout that is challenging bur fair. I like this course however the Burmuda is still dormant and fairway grass is non exsistent. The Greens where punched 3 weeks ago and still suffering many holes and very erratic bounces and rolls. Will come back and play it when the greens heal and the fairways have green grass. Unfortunately that may take 1 to 2 months....
What a relief
After a ....? Experience at a neighboring course down the road the day before, I regained my love for quality golf at The Challenge. The front nine was gentle and cooperative. A beautiful NC day. seventy and sunny, but as I made the turn the weather changed from why I live in NC to the blowing cold wind in Wales. The conditions not only accepted the weather thrown at them, they helped me adapt to the changes. I lost 20 yards on my drive, but gained yardage from 90 yards in. I can't wait to play in the SNOW. A great experience as always. Sorry for being the last one in. Thanks again
thanks for your comment...come back and see us soon!
Over priced
Need ranger for pace of play, no driving range. There are better values out there.
Fun round but expected more of a challenge
Overall course is nice to play. Greens roll well and overall course is in very good shape. Only item I question is the slope of the course. Played back tees and at a slope of 137, expected a tougher challenge. Will play course again. Good value for the money.
Pleasant Surprise
Last minute decision to drive 30 minutes from Durham on a cloudy, rainy day to play The Challenge turned out to be a great idea. Course was a blast to play. Very picturesque and fairly challenging but fun layout. Good mix between narrow and wide fairways. Not the longest course but still enough length to put a long iron in your hands on a couple of occasions. Water looms on three of the four par 5's which makes them a great risk reward opportunity. My only complaint would be that the greens are slow, but still rolled true. If you get the chance play The Challenge, you should be pleasantly surprised.
I'm going BACK!!!
This was my first experience at "Challenge at Hideaway Farm" and it won't be my last. Starting with Jason (The Pro) at check in, all the way to friendly staff at the snack bar, made my golf experience outstanding. Can't wait until next time. Thank to all.
8/11/14
fivesome was allowed to play - no marshall on weekdays - tho allowed to start on back
Hidden Gem
The Challenge is an absolute diamond in the rough. Hidden on the outskirts of Burlington lies a beautiful track. Lush fairways and excellent greens to go along with excellent layout. Rained whole time so only played front nine. Will be back, SOON very soon.
nice layout
I have played here several times and it was the best course condition. Greens, fairways, and roughs are great shape. I started played noon and not many people played at that time so I really enjoyed a round(I played pretty nice and got some luck).
Great Course
Course us really coming along. A few greens and fairways needed a little work but they have signs out. Great condition and always enjoy playing there!
Fun Track
The course was in great shape. The fairways and greens played well. My only complaint was the ground wasp on a couple of the greens. They drilled holes in the greens and were flying all around 2-3 greens. Besides that we had a great day on the course and it was a great deal.
oh, and by the way, it was great the last two years, you just happened to hit it first when real estate people had purchased it and didn't care (long gone) and now after the entire area was damaged with winter kill due to freezing in late March.
By August you will enjoy it again. They had really bad winter kill as many of the courses in central NC have had this year (even Rocky River in Charlotte has temp tees right now due to sprigging). It has grown back a lot (since you were there) with the excellent care given to it by the superintendent and his staff. And now that it's warm enough to plant bermuda they are sprigging the remaining areas. Will play to a reduced 66 par for July as a few holes had to be shortened to keep carts off the sprigging but they will be gradually opened back up as the bermuda takes hold. Superintendent is excellent and it will be it's old self soon.
