The Challenge Golf Club
About
Challenge Golf Club sprawls across a scenic stretch of rolling farmland that sits alongside the Haw River. The lush hills are accented with mature hardwood forests, providing a scenic setting for a round of golf. The hilly terrain on this golf course will test not only your shot-making abilities but also your accuracy. Lakes provide even more natural hazards. Golfers can expect a few perilous carries over water. To add to the layout's difficulty, there are numerous bunkers strategically placed along the greens. The golf course is arguably one of the area's most formidable tests. Although thoughtful strategy and creative shot making will be generously rewarded, it’s not an overly punishing layout. Challenge Golf Club's final hole is a memorable par 5 that's definitely tough, but if you play it smart it could also be a great birdie opportunity.

Par three, 16th green Birdie was made Photo submitted by Geno7176732 on 10/15/2017
Solid track
Grabbed a $39 hot deal. Very good value. Of course I had a career round so might be slightly jaded but the greens are basically perfect. Saw one small dead spot on par 3 by highway otherwise in excellent shape. Quick but not punishing. Tee boxes were good. Fairways above average. Bunkers were thin (except for 11 which I found out has 18” of sand on the high side of it). Played smoothly until caught a twosome behind a foursome on 13/14 but still played in 3:30 on a Sunday late morning so can’t complain about that.
Nice place
First time playing this course....had a great time...nice weather..nice green, bunkers, fairways and to top it off the staff was awesome!
Lives up to its name
Nice layout many challenging holes greens and sand traps in great shape one of my favorites in the area a great value for the money
Sloppy and Slow
Course had a ton of rain over the last five days and was carts on path. Hole number seven was closed due to flooding. Overall the course was in pretty good shape considering the rain. Greens were a bit slow but Were in good condition and fairways have come out. Still some bad bare spots in the rough areas but the course seems to be coming around. Back nine was extremely slow, and never really found out what the holdup was. Obviously carts being on the path had something to do with it, but on some holes there were two groups waiting. Ranger came out one time but all he did was wave as he went by.
What a great course
I played this course a couple of years ago and was not impressed. What a difference this time around. Course was in great shape and played tough but fair.
Great Course, great staff
Course was in very good shape and the greens rolled true. Staff was extremely pleasant! The only problem I had was, while there were green tees, I didn’t notice green tees on the scorecard. White tees for men played at 5755 and Blue tees played 6401. I generally play around 6000-6100 as a senior and I am thinking the green tees probably played somewhere around that distance. In fact some off the tee markers were green/white. Overall, great day of golf! I will definitely be back.
Challenge away
The course was in great condition, weather was perfect and pace of play was outstanding! I would recommend this course to anyone looking for a "Challenge" but without too much difficulty. This is a gem of a course!
Beautiful course!
The Challenge is a very nice course with enough woods to challenge even low handicappers. The greens are in terrific shape and roll nicely. I didn’t see a single bare patch. A big improvement from the last time I played here, a few years ago, when they were still recovering from a rough winter. Fairways are in good shape as well. The only physical drawback to this course is that some of the sand traps are full of mud, not sand, but there was a crew out working on fixing one bunker complex today. Pace of play was good considering how busy courses have been. Got in 18 in just under 4 hours. I will definitely play here again soon.
Great course, staff, conditions, scenery, and value
The Challenge has become one of my favorite public courses.
The layout, combined with great staff, scenery, and value, combines to make a memorable golf experience.
The staff has done an excellent job of keeping our safety and health concerns during the Covid-19 outbreak a top priority.
Also, I shot one of my best rounds, including a birdie on #15, a great par three!
Come play the Challenge. You will enjoy everything!
Great course, conditions, staff, and value
The Challenge offers a great course layout, playing conditions, staff, and value.
Everyone on the staff is helpful, friendly, and professional.
They have gone the extra mile during the Corona Virus outbreak to ensure that the golfer's safety and health are top priority.
Playing conditions are outstanding, with some of the best greens in the area.
Value on Golf Now is terrific, better than courses that charge much more for green fees.
Come play the Challenge. It is on my must play list!
Recommend Course
A couple weeks and course will be better definitely good for this time of year
Essential day out
Enjoyed the course but the group in front of us was slow. They were two holes behind the group in front of them and we still had to wait after each shot.
Great course coming into its own
It's been 15 years or more since I played the Challenge, and I'm glad I made the drive to get there. The course is beautiful and challenging (as the name suggests). They recently aerated the fairways/tees, so it was bumpy, but it was needed since they were pretty firm. The greens rolled beautifully, and the bunkers (other than one currently being filled) were perfect, even without rakes. My only complaint is the lack of a driving range. They only have a hitting net where you hit off mats into a large rectangular net. It's free, though, but only good for loosening up the swing. It's hard to tell if you're hitting shots well.
