The 18-hole Sanctuary Golf Club At Cat Island (previously known as South Carolina National Golf Club) in Beaufort, S.C. is a semi-private golf course that opened in 1985. Designed by George Cobb, Sanctuary measures 6,673 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 136 and a 72.6 USGA rating. The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels.
Sanctuary Golf Club may be the Lowcountry's best conditioned golf course. With velvet tiff-dwarf greens, this George Cobb creation sports beautiful views of Port Royal Sound from many holes.
The course is located on a 400+ acre barrier island just a short 45-minute drive from Hilton Head Island. The layout takes full advantage of the wooded interior with centuries-old live oak trees in abundance.

great value for the price
Very scenic course. We hope the management will maintain the course better than the last owners. It was in bankruptcy years ago due to no play because of poor course condition.
Absolutely beautiful course, that is a very good value for your dollar!
This course is well situated within its natural environment. This vistas were wonderful! Carries over water and wetlands were fair but challenging. Wildlife was in abundance! I think we saw 8 gators on one hole. I truly enjoyed this course and would return in a minute.
Great course, lots of wildlife
Lots of water, wildlife and great views. Be prepared to lose a few balls.
This course has beautiful marsh views and various wildlife.
The course was in good condition, but the area had a good bit of rain two days prior. I felt like the greens were a little inconsistent, some quick, some were slow, however they rolled true. Quite a few bunkers were unplayable because of standing water, you want to avoid those anyway. Other than that it was a great day on the links. You will not be disappointed with this course.
Very scenic. Great low country course.
A couple of the holes are too challenging for someone who plays from the white tees. For me, the first three holes on any course should not be 3, 5, and 1 handicap. I would shorten the first hole by 30 yards and move the first tee a little left. I would shorten hole #17 by 15 yards. These changes, in my mind, would not compromise the integrity of the course. Otherwise, I found the course to be fun and fair and beautiful.
very large greens to hit
A give and take kind of course, narrow fairways to hit, but huge greens. A fun concept.
Great low-country course.
The greens were in great shape - fast and smooth. The course design was perfect for low-country golf, sometimes the greens were abutting marshy areas and the shots were tricky.
Pretty nice
Overall really good, greens were FANTASTIC!!!! Great layout. The staff was really nice, food was great.
Excellent place to play
I've played a few courses on Hilton Head and this is by far the best one yet. It was a great combination of beauty and challenging dog legs and greens. It's next door to Secession and not a bad drive from Savannah, GA. You can't help but feel a little patriotic as you listen to the gunfire from the Paris Island soldiers training to defend our country.
Great course. Very scenic holes and well maintained. Greens were in excellent shape. This course was a must play at $20.00

Good course, will make you think.
Have to hit solid shots and think about your crips/putts.
Course is great
This course was good for the money, and great for beginners or pros. I will play this course again very soo .
One of the best in the area
Great greens. Some of the best I've ever played. Some rough area but that is to be expected in late December. Scenic holes and very few houses to avoid. I will definitely play once or twice a month.
Beautiful course to play with natural setting and maintained well.We plan to play this course again when in Hilton Head.
The challenge for a 24 handicap was getting safely off the tees on the many holes with water, marsh, etc directly in front.Toere is room in the fairways to avoid trouble once you hit the fairway or plentiful rough.Interesting holes add to the fun of the course. It is less of a challenge but just as much fun for a lower handicap player.
The course has a nice layout and the staff is very polite and courteous.
The Sanctuary on Cat Island has a nice layout. It makes you play a variety of shots and you do not have to be a big hitter. The greens are usually pretty fast and they roll true. My favorite holes on the course are the par 4 3rd hole, par 5 15th hole, and the par 3 16th hole. It is a course that all ability levels would have fun playing.
Just a tired old track
With interesting routing, this was once a good course, but inattention and age, has become just 'meh'.
Scruffy tee boxes, sporadic cart path patches, bare fairway patches paint a sad picture. Greens are tight and good, but the lack of maintenance on the aprons is disappointing. That is the purpose of push up greens, all the components have to be functioning to make them work. Fuzzy collection areas are not what was designed.
Ok for a walk with a couple of irons in a Sunday bag, but needs a lot of work to be worth a second look.
Great course for value.
Course was in rough shape given time of year. Proved challenging without being overly difficult. Sand traps and scenery were among the best of any course I have played.
Interesting layout, walkable, beautiful scenery.
Sanctuary is situated at the far end of Cat Island. It is beautiful and quiet and a lot of fun to play. There are a few strange holes, but you get used to it. The golf pro staff are very helpful and accommodating. I must mention the food in the grill: yummy! They served the best fried oysters I have ever eaten. Chili was delicious, friend shrimp and potatoes were great. Keep on the lookout for alligators. I saw 16-20 adolescent gators on #18, along with 2 huge adults, and several throughout the course.
Beautiful course but challenging
The course is nestled in the marsh country of SC and has great views and wild life (gatprs). It has numerous challenging holes and any golfer playing for the first time must be aware of the hazards on each hole prior to playing to avoid surprises. The couse was in very good condition for late fall.
Worth the drive from HH
Best Greens I have ever played in 50 yrs. of golfing
