Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
While Hilton Head is chock full of courses designed by some of the greatest names in golf, just one of them was designed with a computer to give it lines straighter than an arrow throughout.
The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall can be one of the most interesting and eclectic courses you'll play, as well as possibly one of the toughest. From the back tees the course plays to 7,079, with a slope rating of 144.
Named as Golf World's top designer in 1992, Cupp created a course that is visually challenging as well as challenging to play. With sand traps looking as if they were drawn in by, well, a computer, this is a course you'll tell your friends about, though you may not tell them your score.

Greens were horrid
For the price I expected to greens to be in at least average shape but these were in very poor condition. Course overall was pretty challenging with bottleneck fairways throughout and punishing bunkers on slight mishits. Once you reach the greens, the condition was below average at best. Very slow greens overall but also very inconsistent with burn/damaged areas throughout consisting of 20-30% of each green. Staff were friendly and offered us a free beer after our round. They also gave us 10% off at the store simply for playing.
Nice Layout, Greens need some work
Challenging. Fairway, Fringe, were in excellent shape. Greens were very slow and sandy. Perhaps they were working on them for the off season. Overall good experience. Friendly staff.
Great weekend golf
We played the Cupp course and throughly enjoyed it even though it was raining the entire time. Challenging and unique layout.
Just Aerated
Greens had just been aerated was not expecting that.
Good course
Course is pretty and in good shape. Noticed remodel of restaurant and on course. Very pleased.
Will go back!
Terrifying views of fairways and water on the drive into the course. Didn’t play that way though. Tight makes you hit it right. Greens were the most challenging we’ve been on in years but they were fair and perfect
Great day !!
The course was in excellent conditions , pace of play was very good
BBALL
I really enjoyed the course. Staff was very friendly and treated me like a VIP. The course was well maintained. Weather was great and I was paired up with great and friendly golfers on vacation from Canada. I will definitely play this course again.
Water areas were not marked. On course washrooms were gross/rundown. Starter acted as if it was painful to be there.
Not worth it for the price
I chose the Robert Cupp course at Palmetto Hall based on a mix of online reviews and ChatGPT recommendations, but it turned out to be a very challenging experience.
This is not an easy track for the average golfer. The course features tight fairways, small and undulating greens, and several blind shots that make course management difficult. Without prior knowledge, it can feel more punishing than enjoyable.
Course conditions were just average at best. Both the fairways and greens were playable but didn’t stand out in terms of quality or upkeep.
One of the biggest drawbacks is the lack of guidance on the course. There’s no course map on the scorecard, no GPS on the carts, and no hole layout information at the tee boxes. Unless you’re using an app like 18Birdies or have some prior knowledge of the layout, navigating the course can be frustrating.
I paid under $100 through a GolfNow Hot Deal, which felt fair, but I wouldn’t pay much more than that given the overall experience. In comparison, I think other South Links courses offer a more enjoyable and superior round of golf.
Great course to play
Great layout, pleasure to play. Greens were perfect. Fairways were a bit thin and dry, but that’s true of all courses in the area due to the dry winter. Excellent practice facilities and pro shop. Looking forward to going back.
