Oyster Reef Golf Course

About
Oyster Reef features elevated tees and lush fairways lined by thick stands of live oak and pine. Numerous doglegs accented by strategically located mounds and fairway bunkers, call for well-planned tee shots. Varying sizes of greens with well-defined tiers place a premium on precise approach shots.
The par-3 sixth hole, which plays 192 yards from the back tees to a green set against a backdrop of Port Royal Sound, is one of the most visually spectacular holes on Hilton Head. Oyster Reef is now a semi-private member-owned club with a limited number of tee times for guest play,
The carefully-maintained facility, designed by noted course architect Rees Jones, continues to be a favorite destination for serious golfers as well as a favorite with locals.

A course not to miss
Oyster Reef did not disappoint on my return trip after playing it a few years ago. Greens were in nice shape for January golf. The course is nicely layed out with a beautiful signature hole facing the water. If you are trying to decide whether to play this course, go and play it, you will be happy you did.
Still not up to par
3 years ago this course was thriving. But the conditions of the greens were very poor. The 9th green appears to still be recovering from a car driving over it a year ago.
The course looks neglected.
This is the 5th course we have played in the past 2 weeks and by far the worst condition. The other courses were Dolphin Head, Hilton Head National, Fazio in Palmetto Dunes and Jone in Palmetto Dunes. All of these other courses were in much better shape.
Very Nice Course
This was my first time at Oyster Reef, and I was very pleased. Greens are in very good condition and really challenging. Fairways were dormant for the winter, but in very good condition considering. Fairways are tight with lots of bunkers in both fairways and around the greens to make for some tough approach shots. The scenery is great, and the signature par 3 hole is beautiful. Highly recommend playing here and looking forward to playing it again in the near future.
Oyster Reef Golf
Heard lot about Oyster Reef. Greeted nicely in parking lot by cart attendant who shared our experiences would be 2nd to none which excited us. Check in went great, warmly greeted and much to share about the course. Got off ahead of scheduled time, starting on #10, reversed play that day. Nice layout, greens rolled little inconsistent but expect some of that in early January. What wasn't expected was fairways that were not re-seeded. All fairways were dormant and quite thin to hit off of. Totally surprised and actually led to some disappointment having payed over $63 to play. It was our first course out of 6 others we had played since the previous Friday that didn't have reseeded fairways, We paid very similar prices to play the other courses. Again, good layout, treated nicely, but wouldn't have paid that price to play Oyster Reef had we know fairways were not seeded over and with what all was shared with us. Like golf course, just buyer beware before paying this cost for dormant fairways when all around are courses with green grass on their fairways..
Outstanding Course
We have been coming to the HHI area for many years and play Oyster Reef every time we've visited. Having recently retired in the area we'll be playing here as often as we can. Love the course and everyone is so very friendly. This time of year, the course is not over-seeded, but the fairways were OK and the greens immaculate.
We highly recommend it to anyone golfing in the area.

So glad to read your review! Hope to see you again!
I would want to come back
Played during off season, so the turfs were brown and hard except the tee box and the greens. Dormant Bermuda not overseeded so the fairways were tight and hard which made the wedge shots difficult.
I want to come back during the season and try again. The course layout was inviting and player friendly(in my opinion).

Thank's for taking the time to review your day with us! We do hope to see you again soon!
Best Cart Girl!
Cindy was amazing and made our round that much better. Only complaint is there was no ranger going around and the foursome in front of us took so long on each hole, they backed everyone up and we felt rushed the whole time. Would definitely play here again!
Pretty good
The course was in pretty good condition. The layout is quite interesting and requires working the ball both ways off of the tee for ideal position in the fairway. The greens were a little “sketchy”, but very puttable. Friendly and helpful staff.
Great day of golf
Staff was super friendly, they added a local member to our group who was a joy to play with. The course although not long we’re protected by plenty of bunkers making iron play accuracy important. The putting greens were in great condition and offered subtle breaks that were a challenge reading. Great day of golf

Thank you for the review, we do appreciate you sharing your experience!
This course is well maintained
In order to receive the fifth star they need to roll the greens and get them to play a little faster the greens were quite slow but mostly in very good shape.
Great course in Hilton head
This course was in good shape for late December and was a nice layout and a great value. Staff were friendly. My only complaint is that the scorecard shows a set of gold tees that play from approximately 7,000 yards but they don’t have these tees out and would not let anyone play from that yardage. Not an issue for me but my son is a scratch and was looking forward to playing those tees instead of the blues from 6,500 yards. Everything else was great though and we will play oyster reef again next time we visit Hilton head.

Thank you for the review and sharing your experience. We do greatly appreciate it and hope to see you guy's soon.

Oyster Reef is our first choice for Golf when we come to the island every December. As with years in the past, we found the staff friendly, the conditions above average, and. the pace of play wonderful! We highly recommend this golf destination!
