Oyster Reef Golf Course
About
Oyster Reef features elevated tees and lush fairways lined by thick stands of live oak and pine. Numerous doglegs accented by strategically located mounds and fairway bunkers, call for well-planned tee shots. Varying sizes of greens with well-defined tiers place a premium on precise approach shots.
The par-3 sixth hole, which plays 192 yards from the back tees to a green set against a backdrop of Port Royal Sound, is one of the most visually spectacular holes on Hilton Head. Oyster Reef is now a semi-private member-owned club with a limited number of tee times for guest play,
The carefully-maintained facility, designed by noted course architect Rees Jones, continues to be a favorite destination for serious golfers as well as a favorite with locals.

oyster reef
I talked to the pro shop the day before we played and was told the course was aerated the week before and that it was in good shape. That was a lie ! big patches of the greens were completely dug up , the greens must have been in horrible shape before they were aerated. what grass that was there looked black and moldy, And was told that green fees were 50% off. That did not happen. $175 w/club rental. Played Shipyard the day before and it was in great shape
Great course
Oyster had construction on a couple holes and greens were just arrogated but even with that what a great course!
Why mess up a great golf course?
I’ve played Oysters Reef for over 40 years. What the management is doing to the course with their renovations and maintenance is beyond me! The greens on holes 5 through 8 now feature some sort of flat geometric sand “traps” literally cutting into the previous green surface. I have never seen anything like this anywhere on earth. They are ridiculous, impossible to know how to play out of them or how to maintain them after you blast sand all over the green. I’m guessing they are going to add them to even more holes in the future. What next? Windmills and clown faces? Who on earth thought this was a good idea? In addition, the green on the once awesome par 5 9th hole is still under construction after going on almost 2 years now. Playing to the make shift temporary green is a major disappointment. What is going on here? This was one of the best courses in all of South Carolina. Why are you messing it up? I wouldn’t recommend playing here to anyone at this point.
Fun Course
They were working on the course and the course was recently aerated. They did tell us ahead of time. The course is fun and a lot of irons off the tee. Signature hole has a great view framing the green. Food was good and cart lady was always around when we needed something. Would recommend and play again
Course condition
Players need to be notified before showing up to your course that you are aerating. Also, 2 years for a temporary green is kind of crazy.
Challenging but fair.
The course isn’t long. But has a lot of dog legs that make it challenging trying to place your drive. We happen to play right after aeration. They warned us about that and it ended up being OK. We had one temporary green. Otherwise a nice golf outing for the Price.
Not the experience we expected
We recently played this course as two groups of three golfers. Prior to our arrival, the course contacted us and informed us that the greens had been aerated. While this was disappointing, we appreciated the advance notice and decided to keep our tee times.
What we were not told, however, was that the fairways had also been punched. Between the aerated greens and punched fairways, the overall playing conditions were far below what we would expect for a course charging approximately $100 per player. Had we been fully informed about the extent of the maintenance work, we likely would have chosen to play elsewhere.
Pace of play was also an issue. By the time we reached the 9th tee, we had already been on the course for well over two hours. We noticed that the 9th green was under reconstruction, and both of our groups arrived at the tee box at the same time. In an effort to keep moving, all six players teed off together and played the hole as a single group. We fully acknowledge that this was not proper golf etiquette and should not have happened.
The larger issue was how the situation was handled afterward. At the halfway house, three members of our group ordered drinks and hot dogs. The employee working behind the counter appeared to be struggling with the orders, resulting in a lengthy delay. After only a few minutes, the starter entered the facility demanding that three of us immediately proceed to the 10th tee. I stepped outside, looked down the fairway, and observed that there was no group waiting behind us and no one visible ahead. I explained that we were not holding up play and assured him that we understood his concern and would not play as a sixsome again.
Unfortunately, the starter continued repeating the same statement over and over rather than engaging in a productive conversation. The interaction escalated unnecessarily when he began shaking a golf club in front of me and several members of our group while continuing his lecture. Whether intended or not, this was perceived as threatening and highly unprofessional behavior. At that point, we ended the discussion and immediately moved to the 10th tee.
Every golf course occasionally faces maintenance challenges and pace-of-play issues. What separates a good customer experience from a poor one is communication and professionalism. Had we been fully informed about course conditions and treated respectfully by staff, this review would likely be very different.
Unfortunately, between the undisclosed fairway maintenance, the slow pace of play, and the inappropriate conduct of the starter, the experience did not justify the price paid, and we left disappointed.

Oyster Reef
Pretty course. Pace of play was good and conditions were excellent. Starter is exceptionally friendly. Really enjoyed our round!
A great round at Oyster Reef
This was my first time playing here .course was in great shape greens were very true to read and putt on. Fairways were very nice. I highly recommend playing here . Staff was great,
Love the course
I love this course. The pace of play was very slow on the back nine, but the culprits eventually let us play through. The club needed a Marshall on the back nine. Number 9 green is in terrible shape. Almost unplayable. The rest of the course was in very good condition. Will definitely play again.
Oyster Reef
Pro shop professional and Starter were both super nice and helpful. Really enjoyed our round. Lagerheads was nice for a drink after the round. Great price through golf pass in comparison to other courses on the island.
Solid track
Solid course. Other than one incredible view of the water on a par 3 nothing spectacular, but fun to play. In solid shape and the staff were very friendly.
Good vacation round on Hilton Head Island
I booked via GolfNow and thought the price of $85 was reasonable for a morning weekday round. Greens were consistent and generally in good shape. Course conditions overall were good. Bunkers weee well maintained, firm but not thin and very fair. Not a high degree of difficulty from the white tees, which made for an enjoyable vacation round. Starter was on top of things. Grass range, good practice green and friendly staff. Worth playing for sure.
