Island West Golf Club
About
Designed by Clyde Johnston and popular PGA Tour star Fuzzy Zoeller, the Island West Golf Club is a course built around natural marshland and follows the landscape presenting a rolling, tree-lined course.
As one would imagine a course with Zoeller's fingerprints, Island West in Bluffton was built to be a fun, entertaining play, and has succeeded in its mission. Playing to 6,803 with a 129 slope rating from the tips, it's a solid test for the skillful yet playable for the not-so skillful.
Water comes in to play on 10 holes here, so the bold will have many risk-reward opportunities. Accuracy off the tee is a must on many of the tree-lined holes, yet other holes feature wide fairways. Island West is exactly the type of course you'd imagine Zoeller being a part of, but Johnston's expertise also shines through.

Good value
Holes were repetitive and course was not in top condition, although this could have been due to Hurricane Matthew that came through in October. Good value and enough challenge to be interesting.
Course needs some love...
Really interesting course to play, But tee boxes, fairways and greens are in bad shape... The staff is very friendly...
Enjoyed course.
First time on course and enjoyed the course and staff. Will play again.
Island West review
Staff is very helpful. The course was wet but playable after several days of wet weather.
Slow play. Good course.
I was in the area visiting family for Thanksgiving. I preferred to golf instead of shopping. I was able to get a T time for a single golfer through golfnow. I was paired with another gentleman and a couple also visiting the area.
Took us nearly 4.5 hours to play due to the slow groups in front of us even though the ranger told them they must finish in 4 hours 10 minutes or less. Our group of 4 could have played the course in 3.5 hours. The pace of play really affected our game and reduced our enjoyment of the outing. The ranger did everything he could to speed up the slow group, but was rebuffed (nicest word I could think to define their behavior) by them. The management should remove golfers from the course who disrespect the ranger/staff like the slow group did.
The most important part of the golf course to me is the greens. They were not overseeded (I prefer greens NOT overseeded for the winter) and are in good condition for this time of year (except for the practice green). impressive after survivivg a hurricane in early October.
Had a great hotdog, drink and chips for $6.
I will play this course again.
fun course
good course, good condition, extremely slow play. the staff, especially the ranger were very friendly. The ranger did all he could short of tasering the slow group in front of us, trying to speed up play
After Matthew
This course was in great condition considering the island was hit hard by Hurricane Matthew just 30 days ago. The staff was very friendly. We will play it again during the week we are visiting.

Same as previous review. IW is Lilly to be more appreciated by intermediate and better players that play tees appropriate for their skill level.

A fun test for the target golf player. Plenty of complex shots with deceptive landscapes and perception challenging views. Surprisingly fast greens with subtle breaks that will frustrate players struggling to read them. At Island West, what you see is what you get ... you just need to understand what you're looking at and trust your gps. I love that.

A target golf course with sight lines that will make you question your gps. It's an underrated tract in better shape than other Brown Golf courses. Specifically, Crescent Point, which has superior greens, but too little sand in its traps and broken concrete throughout the course and Rose Hill, a 2, at best, that has the worse conditions in the Brown group and more dirt than sand in some traps, substandard tees, fairways and greens. Island West, however, deserves a solid 4+ rating with its superior conditions. I'm playing it again, but this time I'll trust my gps.
Some very challenging holes
Nice course with a very friendly staff. Several holes are challenging especially #10 where there is a long carry for your second shot. Would play again for sure.
Good deal
Had an 820 single tee time and starter got me off at 750. Played single in 2:15! Fun course. Greens ok shape. Some rough areas. But after hurricane so quite acceptable!
Great course
Shape of fairways were great. Greens were a lil spotty, but didn't interfere with play.
Will def go back.
Good off island course
Fairways were in very nice shape. Greens were just average with some rough spots on numerous ones. My only issue was the rough, it was deep enough to lose balls very quickly when the shot is only a few yards off the fairway. The rough close to the greens were the same. I lost a ball on a par 3 that hit the collar, bounced into the higher grass and I could not find it. For a resort type course where you don't want slow play looking for golf balls in the rough is a no-no. Let's cut it down a bit

We had a great time, made the turn and had caught up with a couple slow groups, the course permitted us to play the front again and we did not wait on any shots was very pleasant.
Nice Course
The conditions were pretty good considering that the Matthew Hurricane just went through about a week & 1/2 ago. The price was very good. I would definately play it again.
Great for the Price
I played the course on a GolfNow hot deal which was great. The course was in very good condition considering the time of year. Fairways were lush.
Greens had a few burned out spots, but nothing that interfered with play. Some tee.boxes had crab grass, but nothing that affected teeing up a ball and hitting it. I definitely would play this course again.
Good Value
The course was a good value in comparison to the other courses in the area. The only major issue were the greens. With all of the heavy rains this year, they have a lot of dead patches. Not their fault. The rest of the course was in good shape and the staff was friedly. Some very challenging holes. We had fun playing it and will do it again if we get back to HHI
Good for the money
Greens were pretty beat up. The pin placement helped not too bad putting. Fairways nice good layout. Not an easy course. Would play again. The 25.00 eased the condition of the greens.
