Island West Golf Club
About
Designed by Clyde Johnston and popular PGA Tour star Fuzzy Zoeller, the Island West Golf Club is a course built around natural marshland and follows the landscape presenting a rolling, tree-lined course.
As one would imagine a course with Zoeller's fingerprints, Island West in Bluffton was built to be a fun, entertaining play, and has succeeded in its mission. Playing to 6,803 with a 129 slope rating from the tips, it's a solid test for the skillful yet playable for the not-so skillful.
Water comes in to play on 10 holes here, so the bold will have many risk-reward opportunities. Accuracy off the tee is a must on many of the tree-lined holes, yet other holes feature wide fairways. Island West is exactly the type of course you'd imagine Zoeller being a part of, but Johnston's expertise also shines through.

Greens trouble
Greens currently on the mend. Course tried to accommodate via pin placement due to bad spots on greens. And reduced price aided in softening the blow.
round @ Island West
the staff was extremely helpful and friendly, course for the most part was in good condition but like some courses experienced weather difficulty had green damage but a lot of courses in the area have experienced the problem some greens had putting problems others were ok should be better in the fall for money was a good round
Poor condition
This course was in the horrible condition . I had played it many years ago and it was wonderful. Sadly the $25 per person was way overpriced. Two thirds of the greens were in bad condition and the fairways were burnt.
Poor greens
Staff was good. Course layout was very challenging. Greens were in disrepair. Very rough around the edges.
Transition greens.
Great layout and good service couldn't make up for the horrible greens. Every single green had disease on it although much less on the more open back nine. Was not made aware during booking or I would have gone elsewhere. I was told that the greens were "growing in" but that wasn't really the case. Could be a great place with the greens in good shape.
Fair Course
The course is ok, could be better
Let the greens heal
The greens are greatly distressed. The staff lets you know at checkin. Pretty decent course when in good shape.
Brown Group Golf
All the Brown Group golf courses are going down hill fast. Poorly maintained, greens, fairways, rough just not as well maintained as the use to be, in fact not even close. These courses include; Rose Hill, Island West, Eagle Point, Pinecrest and Cresent Point. I have played these courses for six years and have watched the decline. What a shame!!!
Give it time
The track is great and the tee boxes and fairways were in great shape. We were warned about the greens, and they were pretty rough. However, I won't complain because we got a discounted rate for that reason. With all the rain, I would think the greens would be back by mid summer. Love the course otherwise.
Fuzzy's island West-Not a Warm Fuzzy Feeling
I always play Island Weat because it is a great bargain and a high handicap players (Like myself) User-Friendly Golf Course. On the day that I played, all of the Greens on the course were at least 60%+ bare. Yep, that's right; a lot of dirt and sparse patches of Bermuda Grass. Now, this is totally out of the norm for this course. So, I would still recommend this course but, later in the summer. The greens should healed up and ready to go by July. I would call first and ask about the condition of their greens and then make your decision based on what they tell you...
Greens in rough shape poor drainage
Poor drainage on course. Bunkers flooded Greens in tough shape
Played other courses while on vacation in much better shape
Nice Course Under Repair
Surprisingly challenging for a Low Country residential course. The fairways were in great shape, yet the greens were well below par. However, the staff was honest up front about the improvements underway. When greens are full grown this will be an excellent course. I will play again next time I am back in the Low Country.
Please send me an email as to what and when the improvements will be..
Poor condition
Was not informed the greens were being aerated, pro said it was listed on golfnow's site......I do not see it. Group of 6 playing so had to skip a hole to pass them. Another single player was cutting in in front of people. Course seems to have deteriorated since last time we played.
Greens were in horrible shale
While the price was good on Golfnow, when I arrived I was informed the Greens were in bad shape. That was an understatement. While I was given a 2-for-1 coupon to compensate for the conditions I wouldn't play again for @ least 3 weeks maybe more to give the greens time to grow in
Needs lots of work.
The greens are in terrible shape. Some were almost not playable due to the amount of dirt. The rest of the course could use a some water. Very yellow everywhere and no green grass. Would not pay more than twilight rate.
No Good
This course is deteriorating fast! Greens are terrible....hard, brown, patchy. Fairways rough and super hard. Fringe lumpy. Tee boxes hard. Purchased bag of range balls and decided not to use prior to play. Tried to return them for $6 refund after playing 13 holes and employee refused until manager heard me complaining. Scratch this place!
Ps. Did get my $6 back.
Like Playing on Concrete
The course was in horrible condition. The greens were hard, brown and in most cases white due to lack of water. I played this course two years ago and it has deteriorated a lot. I've never played off so much hard pan in my life.
Value course but was in poor conditions
I have played this course before and thought it was a good value for the money. However the course is in really bad shape right now but signs of it coming around.
Great times
The first time we played here. Great layout with tight fairways and a little water.
Greens are still recovering but better than some of the other courses.
Clubhouse staff was good but starter let groups build on the first hole.
You are correct about the terrible quality of the IW Course but why recommend it when there are so many great courses. If this is a person 's vacation would you want them to waste a day here?
