Island West Golf Club
About
Designed by Clyde Johnston and popular PGA Tour star Fuzzy Zoeller, the Island West Golf Club is a course built around natural marshland and follows the landscape presenting a rolling, tree-lined course.
As one would imagine a course with Zoeller's fingerprints, Island West in Bluffton was built to be a fun, entertaining play, and has succeeded in its mission. Playing to 6,803 with a 129 slope rating from the tips, it's a solid test for the skillful yet playable for the not-so skillful.
Water comes in to play on 10 holes here, so the bold will have many risk-reward opportunities. Accuracy off the tee is a must on many of the tree-lined holes, yet other holes feature wide fairways. Island West is exactly the type of course you'd imagine Zoeller being a part of, but Johnston's expertise also shines through.

Great day at Island West
Quick pace of play, course in great shape. Greens were excellent, fairways played well. Challenging without being too difficult.
Slow,slow,slow
Quit after 10 holes and over 3 hours. The Ranger/Starter met us at the 8th hole and apologized for the slowness . Course was in good shape with greens fairly fast. Will not play here again.
Experience of Playing Course
We were pleased to play Island West. We found the course had several very wet spots in fairways, around greens and other places.
Good Day Out
You get what you pay for. Good price for the round $35, but pace of play was slow and a little disorganized at the start. A 2-some snuck out in front of us and pushed our tee time back. Play was super slow, but we were in no rush...but it got old later in the day. 5+ hour round kind of took some wind out of our sails. Give the course a shot if you have a 4-some and get out early.
Fantastic value for money
Great course, in very good condition. Greens bit bumpy, but quite fast.
Staff were really friendly picking up and taking clubs after the round and telling you what to look out for on certain holes.
Fantastic value for money, would defiant let recommend.
Ready for some shot-guessing?
Beautiful day. Play was sparse so nothing to hold us up. Bunkers well groomed. Greens ran 9 - 9.5 and were reasonably smooth. Fairways were in average condition but LOTS of bare spots in the rough. Tee areas were a bit soggy, a problem when you have to count on a good foundation for a full swing.
The biggest problem for a first round at this course is that there are several holes where it is essential to go forward to examine the landing areas -- otherwise there are ample surprises.
Never again
4 1/2 hours as a threesome doesn't get it. I was early for my tee time and was told they had filled my slot. So I waited for the next group who were members and had no interest in pace of play.
It's wet
This is the third time that I have played this course. Each time it seemed overly wet. Must have a drainage issue. Also, with a 9 AM tee-time, we had to follow a single player hitting multiple balls. Why was he on the course. Also, their were two twosomes next. They did combine, which helped. They needed a marshal, or at least a starter. The greens traps were fine. Tees were overseeded, which only make them better down the road.
best course ever played at this price
Every thing was great. Course was well gromed. Greens real smooth. Real challenging course.
Clubhouse mixup
I booked my tee time with Golf Now for 7:48AM. I showed up 1/2 hour early, but there was nobody inside clubhouse to confirm my tee time. The only person there was a guy pulling carts out. After waiting an additional 35 minutes past my tee time they paired me up with a couple of local members. The course is very nice and well worth what I paid. Glad I waited out the morning issues. Would definitely play this course again.
Course very good for money
Price is good for this course, greens could be faster , course in good shape
sloppy mess
We knew they were overseeding, but they were also watering very hard,,,,,,sprinklers were going on one hole ahead of us the entire round....my shoes are ruined and there was at least of 1-2 inches of water on the ground. The craziest thing was I received a e-mail saying the next day it would be 90 degree on the course.....NO WAY....it would take days to dry out....
One of Many Great Courses
Great Layout of Course. Tee Box to Green excellent conditions.
Diplorable Conditions
Due to oversee ding the course was absolutely saturated. Would love a refund or a credit for a new round when the course dries. The scenery was beautiful, but the maintenance staff were loud and plentiful. As a Chef for a private club here on Hilton Head I was extremely disappointed.
Poor very wet conditions
While we understood we had a good rate due to "overseeding" the course was saturated. The first tee box was so wet shoes and socks were soaked from the beginning. The puddling on the cart paths was so bad that even slow, you were splashing. Not to mention standing water all over the course. Also a lot of ground maintenance taking place so very loud for most of round, and not easy to relax .
Good facility
Best value in the area for price paid..Staff was excellent
Great Round
Played with Brother in Law and nephew. The greens were is very good shape. Probably best I've seen here all year. Wet from lots of rain so cart path only but not many players on course. Let one single thru and we still finished in 4hrs just because cart path only. We usually play faster but had a great day on a good course.
Buckeye plays golf in new State, South Carolina
Don, who picked up our bags was special, treating us like we were at Augusta, ever smiling, giving us insight to the course and a huge Welcome.......great guy.
Pro staff were friendly, professional and courteous. Presented brochures and phone apps to research Brown Management Golf opportunities.
We like the challenge of the course and the playing conditions were outstanding after a huge rainfall over night.
I would offer or comment that some type of hole layout is needed in order to know from the tee, the green direction, hazards such as lakes and traps that are blind from the tee or second shot areas.
Need a map!
Challenging course. It was our first time playing so of course we had no course knowledge. The score card did not include a map and there wasn't one available in the pro shop. On a number of holes we couldn't tell if it was a dog leg left or right or tell where water hazards were. I think they have a QR code to use a smartphone, but we didn't know that.
