Island West Golf Club
About
Designed by Clyde Johnston and popular PGA Tour star Fuzzy Zoeller, the Island West Golf Club is a course built around natural marshland and follows the landscape presenting a rolling, tree-lined course.
As one would imagine a course with Zoeller's fingerprints, Island West in Bluffton was built to be a fun, entertaining play, and has succeeded in its mission. Playing to 6,803 with a 129 slope rating from the tips, it's a solid test for the skillful yet playable for the not-so skillful.
Water comes in to play on 10 holes here, so the bold will have many risk-reward opportunities. Accuracy off the tee is a must on many of the tree-lined holes, yet other holes feature wide fairways. Island West is exactly the type of course you'd imagine Zoeller being a part of, but Johnston's expertise also shines through.

Diplorable Conditions
Due to oversee ding the course was absolutely saturated. Would love a refund or a credit for a new round when the course dries. The scenery was beautiful, but the maintenance staff were loud and plentiful. As a Chef for a private club here on Hilton Head I was extremely disappointed.
Poor very wet conditions
While we understood we had a good rate due to "overseeding" the course was saturated. The first tee box was so wet shoes and socks were soaked from the beginning. The puddling on the cart paths was so bad that even slow, you were splashing. Not to mention standing water all over the course. Also a lot of ground maintenance taking place so very loud for most of round, and not easy to relax .
Good facility
Best value in the area for price paid..Staff was excellent
Great Round
Played with Brother in Law and nephew. The greens were is very good shape. Probably best I've seen here all year. Wet from lots of rain so cart path only but not many players on course. Let one single thru and we still finished in 4hrs just because cart path only. We usually play faster but had a great day on a good course.
Buckeye plays golf in new State, South Carolina
Don, who picked up our bags was special, treating us like we were at Augusta, ever smiling, giving us insight to the course and a huge Welcome.......great guy.
Pro staff were friendly, professional and courteous. Presented brochures and phone apps to research Brown Management Golf opportunities.
We like the challenge of the course and the playing conditions were outstanding after a huge rainfall over night.
I would offer or comment that some type of hole layout is needed in order to know from the tee, the green direction, hazards such as lakes and traps that are blind from the tee or second shot areas.
Need a map!
Challenging course. It was our first time playing so of course we had no course knowledge. The score card did not include a map and there wasn't one available in the pro shop. On a number of holes we couldn't tell if it was a dog leg left or right or tell where water hazards were. I think they have a QR code to use a smartphone, but we didn't know that.
Great $$ Value
Course was a bit rough in spots (especially portions of the cart path, but overall a great value for the price. Would go again in future .
Rainy day
Course was in good condition other than tee areas where there was a lot of crabgrass. Had a rainstorm just as we finished first nine so back was very wet. Fairways were generous but many forced carries over scrub,
challenging
this was my first time playing this course as I was on vacation. GolfNow recommended this course and it proved to be a very very challenging.
a few holes on the front nine add some forced carries over some barancas that really proved atest for your favorite club. I look forward to playing this course again when I return in November
Great value
I am a no frills golfer. I load my own clubs on my cart, clean my own clubs, etc. This course is not full of frills but is an excellent course. Well maintained, clean, picturesque, and playable. If you play the tips, it will challenge you, but won't beat you up. Worth your time and money.
Nice challenging course.
Greens are very fast and about a month out from aeration, but were great to putt on. Course has tight fairways guarded by a fair share of bunkers. Course is well maintained, fun to golf and staff in the club house and starter were friendly and helpful. The restaurant staff were a little grumpy when asked for ice and we were lectured on outside beverages coolers when all we wanted was ice to keep our snap towels wet and cool.
Not like it used to be.
Island West has always been a nice layout. It still is a nice layout. Unfortunately, ever since Brown Golf management took over, course conditions have deteriorated. Course conditions are scruffy at best. Conditions are about the same as at a muni. Fairways, greens and tees could be better maintained. The cart paths are in atrocious condition. Lots of pot holes. Watch out for the gigantic pot hole as you approach #11. If it's filled with water you might not notice how deep the hole is and you might give yourself a real jolt at you go through it. In summary, this is a fine course that Brown Golf has allowed to deteriorate.
Island West Bluffton SC
Fantastic course. Lots of water. Wide open fairways.
Great views of open areas.
Would play again.
Awful greens
Wasn't forewarned about airated, sanded greens, and the grass being long didn't help. Tee boxes were also in awful shape. Quit after nine holes
Good value in HH
First time playing here after passing it by for so many years. Found the course to be a decent layout, but some unseen water hazards, even after asking about them. Greens were okay as were fairways and tees...little crabgrass problem though.
Overall, it is a tremendous value for a Hilton Head course. Just expect no frills golf.
Great course at great price.
The course is in fabulous condition. All of the fairways were in good shape. The greens all had the same speed and the ball rolled true. Paid $33/ 18 holes cart included.
Getaway
Nice course with friendly and helpful staff. Pace of play is a plus. A good value for the money. Will play again.
Great value
Fairway and greens were in excellent condition , especially for midsummer. Staff was friendly and reservations via golf now were acknowledged/honored in the pro shop without my mention. Only annoyance was lack of a map showing hazards. Will definitely play again.
great condition
nice layout. Would play again. Fairways and greens in good shape
