About
Designed by Clyde Johnston and popular PGA Tour star Fuzzy Zoeller, the Island West Golf Club is a course built around natural marshland and follows the landscape presenting a rolling, tree-lined course.
As one would imagine a course with Zoeller's fingerprints, Island West in Bluffton was built to be a fun, entertaining play, and has succeeded in its mission. Playing to 6,803 with a 129 slope rating from the tips, it's a solid test for the skillful yet playable for the not-so skillful.
Water comes in to play on 10 holes here, so the bold will have many risk-reward opportunities. Accuracy off the tee is a must on many of the tree-lined holes, yet other holes feature wide fairways. Island West is exactly the type of course you'd imagine Zoeller being a part of, but Johnston's expertise also shines through.

It's ok...
Staff seemed very upset to even see me or answer my questions. Almost seemed annoyed by me being there. Course was nice. Greens very nice. Marshall's do nothing. I golfed alone had my wife and daughter tag along for $20?!? But took 5+ hours to finish because no one allowed me being 1 person pass the 4 somes that were in front of me. Will not be going back
This course in not in very good condition.
The course in March 2014 is not in very good condition. Fairways and greens need work, some ball washers with no water or handles broken off, some bunkers almost rock hard. Very little attention seems to be paid to basic maintenance.
Something for everybody
Played this course many times before. It has something for all levels of golfers. Course conditions where average and will probably improve as the weather improves. Very disappointed in the service from the bag/cart attendants. In spite of receiving a tip, they did not clean or offer to clean our clubs after the round. I could have driven the clubs to my car and saved the tip...
Needs to be better conditioned
I'd like to play the course again as it was somewhat interesting. Fairways were very hard which led to a lot of unexpected runout leading to trouble. With more attention to growing better turf this could be a nice course.
Island West G C
This is one of our favourite golf course when we come to Hilton Head. The staff is friendly and helpful and the condition of the golf course is good.
Disappointing
I knew the price was too low to expect a high end experience. But there are lots of ways you can make up for a course with little grass off the fairways, bare patches on the greens and poorly maintained bunkers. Unfortunately the staff were equally disappointing. The check in was curt and unfriendly, and when I approached the gentleman outside that I assumed was the starter, I was corrected in a manner reserved for rude waiters. First, and last visit to Island West.
Nice course
This is a nice course, very enjoyable to play. Staff is friendly, I would definitely play here again.

A good course with some challenging holes, but fair.

Great course to play with golf buddies
Introduced two of my friends to the course; they truly enjoyed and were glad that I picked Island West. The pace was good, the alligators behaved themselves. It was a perfect day.

Been there
Not a favourite. Tee boxes in poor shape. Greens are okay. Lots of hidden trouble. If you don't always hit down the middle be prepared to lose balls. Better choices in area.
Nice course
The course was in fine condition for late February.
Fun Day on the Island
The course was in good condition other than the fact that the greens were very slow along with the pace of play. The pace was fine on the back nine after the offending foursome went for a luncheon break!

Poor conditions, over a 5.5 hour round an the staff marginally helped move play along...
Visit other local tracks an pass on this one...low cost option but there are many other local tracks that are more worth the money!
Course need work.
Course need some work. Fairways were very wet and soft in some areas. Overwatered or problems with sprinkler system? Some tee boxes were in bad shape. Greens were very slow. They needed to be cut. Play on the front nine was very slow, due to a group, two groups in front of us. Staff corrected problem on the 8th hole. Pace improved on back nine. Course layout was nice. Would recommend, if course conditions improve.
The course will be in better shape when in growing season.
I have been coming to Hilton Head for the last 25 years and look forward to playing Island West, but after this last experience I am not sure I would ever come back. The cart / starter person was not very accommodating and definitely not very friendly. We did tee off at the designated time, only to spend almost six hours playing 18 holes.
Difficult play for beginner or intermediate golfer
Generally speaking this course was a difficult one to play for beginner or intermediate golfers. The fairways were generally quite narrow for us at any rate. A lot of water and a lot of lost balls. The course conditions when played were less than good.
