About
Designed by Clyde Johnston and popular PGA Tour star Fuzzy Zoeller, the Island West Golf Club is a course built around natural marshland and follows the landscape presenting a rolling, tree-lined course.
As one would imagine a course with Zoeller's fingerprints, Island West in Bluffton was built to be a fun, entertaining play, and has succeeded in its mission. Playing to 6,803 with a 129 slope rating from the tips, it's a solid test for the skillful yet playable for the not-so skillful.
Water comes in to play on 10 holes here, so the bold will have many risk-reward opportunities. Accuracy off the tee is a must on many of the tree-lined holes, yet other holes feature wide fairways. Island West is exactly the type of course you'd imagine Zoeller being a part of, but Johnston's expertise also shines through.

good layout, fair course in decent condition for this time of year. Enjoyed first outing on this course and would return
course in very good condition
course had wonderful grass on the fairways and greens were in excellent condition. A fun course to play.
Poor conditions, over a 5.5 hour round an the staff marginally helped move play along...
Visit other local tracks an pass on this one...low cost option but there are many other local tracks that are more worth the money!
Course need work.
Course need some work. Fairways were very wet and soft in some areas. Overwatered or problems with sprinkler system? Some tee boxes were in bad shape. Greens were very slow. They needed to be cut. Play on the front nine was very slow, due to a group, two groups in front of us. Staff corrected problem on the 8th hole. Pace improved on back nine. Course layout was nice. Would recommend, if course conditions improve.
The course will be in better shape when in growing season.
I have been coming to Hilton Head for the last 25 years and look forward to playing Island West, but after this last experience I am not sure I would ever come back. The cart / starter person was not very accommodating and definitely not very friendly. We did tee off at the designated time, only to spend almost six hours playing 18 holes.
Difficult play for beginner or intermediate golfer
Generally speaking this course was a difficult one to play for beginner or intermediate golfers. The fairways were generally quite narrow for us at any rate. A lot of water and a lot of lost balls. The course conditions when played were less than good.
Reasonable
If you're just playing to tune up a rusty game and want to economize, this is the place. Played in Feb., so the course conditions might improve later in the season(?) I did speak to someone who has played in season and he said the conditions were not good then.The score card only has yardage and par, no layout help. Some holes have unseen hazards and trouble areas which could easily be addressed with a redesigned score card.

This course has an interesting layout. Nice mix with some challenging carries and strategically placed bunkers, however the traps were in need of sand. Fairways and greens were in good condition. Pace of play was excellent. Good value..

Have not played here in years. I don't think I will go back anytime soon. The traps are hard dirt not sand. The course definitely needs some TLC.

Nice course for the money
Island West was in very good shape for the winter. The Bermuda fairways were over seeded with rye and looked nice and played nice. The greens were in good shape. The course is well maintained and very scenic.

Course is not maintained. Terrible shape.
We played different courses all week and by far this course was a cow pasture compared to other courses we played.
