The Windermere Club
About
Located just outside of Columbia, The Windermere Club sits along the banks of the lake that it takes its name from. Pete Dye designed the golf course, crafting a number of memorable holes. It's his only design in the Midlands. No two holes are alike on this challenging layout, so expect to use every club in your bag. The golf course offers a variety of risk-reward opportunities that will appeal to both low and high handicappers. There are also five, and sometimes six, tee boxes on every hole, making the golf course even more appealing for any skill level. The fairways are generous but lined with mature hardwoods and there are strategically placed bunkers to contend with. Golfers at The Windemere Club will also encounter subtle but tricky elevation changes and several lakes and ponds.

9 holes of misery
Half of the course is shut down for the rest of the year to get new greens put in supposedly. I find it awkward how a supposed bankrupt golf course can afford to replace the greens on half the course, but maybe I misunderstood them at the neighborhood hoa meeting. Obviously the back 9 is packed because people are playing it twice to get 18 holes. Long waits, burned out bent grass greens that are surprisingly wet and let your balls bury into them. The staff and layout is great though.
Never again
Course is in terrible shape. Front 9 is closed and no notice beforehand. Were supposed to play the back twice. Played a few holes and left. Waste of money and time.
Great Round
We had a great time. After reading the reviews, I expected problems but did. Or find them. The course was in great shape from Tee to Green. We will be back again.
Needs work
This course always goes up and down as far as condition goes. Right now it is down. Bunkers are horrible, liners exposed in most, others are more waste area than sand trap. Several greens have seen better days. For a country club it should not fluctuate this much in terms of condition.
Course Is In Good Condition
Other than a few small spotty areas on some of the greens, the course was in good shape. Pace of play was good until we caught up to a couple of slow foursomes. I will start playing here more often and would recommend it to others.
Nice course
First time playing here and will definitely go back!
Good Course, Great Value
Good course with one of the best layouts I’ve played. Plenty of bunkers and multiple holes that bring water into play. I recommend getting a yardage book even if you don’t normally as you HAVE to plan your way around this course. A few greens are a little patchy but can tell they’re on their way back to good shape, and are still in better condition than most courses in the area. Bunkers are pretty firm, but also played in a light drizzle, so that could be a big factor. Really a hidden gem with them just opening up to public not long ago. I’ll definitely be back!
Great Round and It Appears Like They Are Really Trying
As previous reviews state, The greens and course are receptive to issues throughout the year with the SC heat, but right now the course is in great shape (I’ve also seen some hard times out here). All 18 greens are playable and full, (yes, slow at times) but overall it’s a win.. understandably the bunkers are sometimes hard to maintain with midlands orange clay, but most tee boxes and fairways and greens are where they want them to be I would believe (even with this heat wave).. one of my favorite layouts in Columbia with best finishing hole in the area in my opinion.. Even if the course is not in tip top shape, it’s completely worth the course architecture and appreciation for golf to enjoy a round here.. thanks to the staff for continuing to try and improve the experience
Poor Windermere
I have played here over 25 rounds in the past year. Holes 10,15,18 are in terrible shape. Hole 15 should just be skipped all together since every time the ball lands in the fairway it gets buried in mud. There are more Cart tire tracks then there is fairway grass. The layout here is awesome though. Maybe they need to consider an angel investor to help get the course back up to okay shape. Course needs GREENS! Bent grass is not doing the trick! This course is literally worth 10-15 for 18 holes. The greens rarely bounce causing balls to stick to most greens. Disappointed, yet optimistic they can attempt to stop the bleeding..
Not even worth $20
It’s late February so I dont know what the condition of the course will be like in summer. But for now it’s a total waste of money. Was only $20, but wouldn’t play it again if it was free in the shape it’s in now. At least 7 greens were not playable, picked my ball up on maybe 11 of them. Too bad because both the staff, and layout were nice. it could be a good course with some money put into it, but for now, it isn’t!
Not an A course
The course overall was ok. Most of the greens were in terrible shape with fungus and bacterial growth causing rough surface. Some of them had been scraped up and swatches placed to help recovery. Price was discounted for this reason. Heavy rain this winter makes playing difficult as the greens and fairways cannot dry out. I have played here before when it was in much better shape and it is a nice, somewhat challenging course. Average golfers can really enjoy the layout. Plenty of challenges, but not too hard.
Spotty greens
Took advantage of Golf Now Hot Deal, thank goodness. Just 15 minutes from home and a beautiful, secure area, the course condition was quite disappointing. We have had above average rainfall lately, so the fairways were rutted up by cart traffic. The tee boxes were in good shape, but most of the greens are suffering. I play a municipal course about 10 miles away and their tee boxes are not well maintained, but the greens are always in excellent condition. May give it another chance in the summer. Thanks.
Challenging from the tips, no doubt. Be long and don’t miss left or right if you want to feel any good about your game. Course was a little beat up and definitely challenging. Tons of big trouble waste on both sides, most of which stood impossible for a play based on conditions. Lucky to avoid them ... Paths could use some work. Overall good round, but don’t think I’d write home about it. Good luck.
Not worth my time
The greens are awful, Unless you like seeing your ball bounce to the hole. Fairways underwater. This course has some huge potential and has a great layout with the ponds or lakes around it, but clearly money is not being invested in this course. It’s too bad because we really enjoyed the views on a lot of holes.
Enjoyable round of Golf
A very pleasant experience for mid-January. Course layout was great, and the holes with water were very picturesque.
Loved the course and layout!
This was my first time playing at Windermere, and I was a bit concerned that it might not be in the best condition after reading some of the reviews here. However, I was sweetly surprised by the overall conditions of the course. The P Dye design was challenging, yet fun, and scenery around the course is beautiful. After a terrific round, we stopped in the Club for lunch. I had the Shrimp Burger and it was amazing. Staff is very professional and friendly. I will definitely return!l
