The Windermere Club
About
Located just outside of Columbia, The Windermere Club sits along the banks of the lake that it takes its name from. Pete Dye designed the golf course, crafting a number of memorable holes. It's his only design in the Midlands. No two holes are alike on this challenging layout, so expect to use every club in your bag. The golf course offers a variety of risk-reward opportunities that will appeal to both low and high handicappers. There are also five, and sometimes six, tee boxes on every hole, making the golf course even more appealing for any skill level. The fairways are generous but lined with mature hardwoods and there are strategically placed bunkers to contend with. Golfers at The Windemere Club will also encounter subtle but tricky elevation changes and several lakes and ponds.

Nice layout; some attractive holes.
The course has a wonderful layout with some visually pleasing holes as well as some challenging ones as well.
However, the course could use some maintenance. The grass was thin at times, with some "hardpan" on most holes. If the grass was not as sparse, the course would be, and could be, a really great course!
The course was in terrible condition.
The course was terrible. The fairways were brown and did not provide any playable surface. The tee blocks were in very poor condition. We expressed our disappointment with the staff who wer dismissive and have obviously received similar comments recently. The Maters week is clearly a cash grab to in order to prepare the club for its members.
Good layout, poor conditioning
I liked the layout here-plenty of variety but the course was in poor condition (except for the greens). And since it was Masters week, we paid a premium to play here. Fairways and bunkers need significant attention to bring course to quality level.
The course needs a lot of work and attention.
I'm not sure when the other reviews were written for this course but the course was in bad shape overall and for the money it was not a good value at all.
Too early in the season for fair assessment
Since it's still early April the fairways at this course have not turned fully green as of 4/07/13 Still lots of brown spots and so,so... conditions. However the greens were in really nice shape already, green and fast. In a matter of a few weeks, maybe days of some warmer weather this course will be great. Golf now saved our group about $20 per man, would go back there again.
Excellent Layout:)
Course was in great shape for this time of year. Greens were in excellent shape, very fast and undulating.
Would love to play the course in the summer when everything is grown in.
Challenging course and fun to play
We played the Sunday before The Masters so it was busy, but we never really had to wait to play on any hole other than No. 1 and No. 10. Nice layout, challenging but fair. Would definitely play it again when in the area.
Best course in Columbia, SC
Best course in Columbia, SC, cannot wait to play it again!
Great challenging course, fun to play!
Fun course, need to play the correct tee box or you will lose some balls. Several great holes, challenging and scenic!
A course that will challenge your shot precision
The course was well maintained and it offered several challenging holes. This course has several blind and deep bunkers throughout the course. The greens offered very quick but challenging putts. The rolling hillsides around the greens require some very tricky lofted shots to make par. I would rate this course more for the mid to low handicapper for a more enjoyable round. Windermere does offer some great views around the course.
Great cousre. Extremely challenging, fast greens, and breath taking views.
This is one of the best courses in town. Requires demanding approach shots because of speedy greens. Tees are set from 6000-7000 yards providing a challenge for all skill levels. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens were in excellent shape. This is a must play course.
Fun course for a high or low handicapper alike.
We decided to play this course while visiting Columbia SC on November 8, 2012. Found it on web for a great fee. Not very crowded that day and play moved smoothly in spite of not knowing the course. There are a few tee shots that you can't see the landing area. There is lateral water, lots of mature trees, and the sand bunkers are in the spots to make you think about them. This is a fun course as it called for strategy and course management. There is a 260 yard par four dog leg right on the back nine that I want to play again. The 150 yard barber pole on this hole is actually 100 yards to the hole and up hill to the green. However, there is no indication of that until you get to the pole. We played it thinking the pole was 150 yards from the green not 100 so the fairway traps came in to play. We liked the place and the staff was helpful. It was in late Fall condition with some greens damage and the fairways were thin. There is a very nice club house building with a bar and dining area for a casual lunch. We'll play it when we get the chance traveling through the state.
challeging and well maintained
Hilly fairways and many sand traps, water and other hazzards. Well maintained and large and fast greens.
Windermere is a fun course with some very challenging holes
Windereme is one of the best courses in the area. It has some very challenging holes with a fair amount of hazards that make for a great round of golf. There is a great balance of long and short par 4's and the par 5's can be reached with strong shots. Bent greens and wide fairways make this layout fun and approachable for all skill levels. The first hole aside; this course presents a distinct character that will bring golfers back multiple times.
Tough, nice course
I've wanted to play this course for a while. I found a noon tee time on sale, so I jumped on it. We had a great time at this private course.
A Stand Out
Best inward stretch of holes in the Columbia, with stand outs including the deepest bunker I've ever been in on #10, a driveable par 4 on #14, and a closing stretch of holes playing toward, and alongside,a lake. Also worth mentioning is #9, a par 3 with a 180 yard do-or-die carry over a pond. For those looking to experience a Pete Dye design without the resort costs, Windermere is a perfect outing.
Each hole has distinctive challenges: sloping fairways, doglegs, fairway bunkers, and water that runs the length of several par 4s. Used every club.

Several greens are protected by bunkers that will make the best of golfers feel a lump in the throat. Pete Dye peppered Windermere with wonderfully fun & lengthy par 3s. One is ravishingly scenic with water separating tee boxes f.rom green .
Worst Golf Course in Columbia
No practice balls on range. Greens awful. Staff so so. Lady working beverage was nice but thats about it. Took almost 5 hours on a Wednesday. If they would pair twosomes then it would move at a better place! My dad said dont ever ask me to play the course again. Columbia has alot to offer and this course is awful! Play cobblestone, timberlake, linrick, etc! But this course should not have 4stars, two at best!
